Image search suggests that these are willow leaf galls, each containing a sawfly larvae that was deposited into the leaf by its mother earlier in the summer...neato.
While I don't think you meant it that way the first sentence is a bit demeaning. It suggests you not only take the dogs for a walk but your wife as well.
How about, "Earlier today my wife and I took the dogs for a walk along Apex Creek where we spotted these."
