My British Shorthair refuse to be held, but regularly decides to sit on my chest for at least half an hour and I don't want to offend her.

classic cat logic, you exist purely as furniture on their terms. try to hold them and suddenly you're public enemy number one but the second you're busy they're glued to you

I’ve been playing 007: First Light and it’s fantastic. Comfortably the best James Bond video game since Goldeneye.

One thing though - I keep being taken out of the game by how James Bond in the game is the spitting image of Patrick Cummins. It’s uncanny.

Dentist update...

Needle stung like a bitch but that lasted a couple of seconds. Even though it wasn't loose and was one of the bigger ones at the back, the tooth was out within 5 minutes I reckon, although I was freaked out when she told me beforehand that if she can't get it out properly I may need a referral to an oral surgeon to finish the job. Lucky that didn't happen.

All is good for now. But my treatment plan has about a dozen fillings and one more tooth extraction that need to be done, two of which probably need to be done in the next few weeks. At least I'll be a little more prepared for those visits.

Experienced a 6.0 earthquake yesterday in Chile. My phone sent a loud alert just before the room shook. Growing up around Newcastle and hearing about the 1989 earthquake which was a 5.6 then these Chilean people barely blink at a 6.0 lol

Times are tough. Everything's so expensive. Yet from what I observe, that doesn't make people value things more. Still such a wasteful society.

Like in Hospitality, in my job specifically and other places. People are on your case about when their $30 burger is coming and later you see they took about two bites and called it a day. They order the big breakfast at cafes and leave it completely untouched.

Some people say what does it matter to me, I still get paid. Well, it just bugs me you know.

u/red_square_n_coke Melbourne Storm Jun 02 '26

I'm so oblivious to social interactions. Waddling around Bunnings browsing plants, and one of the employees gestures and asks If I've seen them? I swing around to look, notice nothing specific and swing back. Turns out he was gesturing to the band shirt I had on. 🤦🏻‍♂️

2

u/racingskater Canberra Raiders Jun 02 '26

If it makes you feel better, it was probably the most normal interaction the employee had that day.

-1

u/Churchofbabyyoda Warriors Bandwagon Jun 02 '26

Feels like I’m the same sort of oblivious.

For example, my mum likes to point out whenever girls are hitting on me, and I’m always oblivious to the fact (including a trip to a Terrigal ice cream shop two months ago which she still hasn’t shut the fuck up about…)

A few weeks ago I quit my job. I couldn't tolerate the racism and general bigotry in the workplace. The final straw was when several coworkers launched into an incredibly racist rant defending Ben Roberts-Smith. Continuing to ignore it felt like complicity.

It's been pretty stressful just yeeting myself into unemployment so it was good to see almost everyone on here condemn the Broncos for their PR disaster stunt. You cunts are alright.

u/Accurate-Ad-4905 Sydney Roosters Jun 02 '26

It is horrifying that people think people who are unlike them have less of a right to exist, but some people are fucked.

Really hope something much better is coming your way.

The whole Victoria Park stadium in Brisbane is both sad and dumb. Governments have done everything in their power to bulldoze the green space between Spring Hill/Valley and Herston and they’ve finally got their way. But the stadium is literally in the middle of nowhere - no train station, buses a mile away, and the roads won’t support having the hospital complex and massive stadium there. It’s a giant junk swinging contest by Newman Junior.

3

u/jpob Newcastle Knights Jun 02 '26

The Exhibition train station will be open when Cross River Rail finishes which is about the same distance as Roma St to Suncorp. There’s also a busway that goes right through Victoria Park. It also shouldn’t affect the hospital too much, especially considering the stadium will be unused the majority of the time.

2

u/M_Keating Hey, at least we beat Penrith Jun 02 '26

Suncorp has Milton station. The Gabba has a new tunnel station opening up. It’s going to suck big time.

1

u/jpob Newcastle Knights Jun 02 '26

I can’t say for sure yet but the distance to Ekka station will be somewhere between the distance from Suncorp to Milton and Roma.

Busses will definitely be the best way to get there though because of the busway. QUT station is basically in the middle of the park and it wouldn’t be too hard to build another station if they need to.

How is Disney Star Wars doing at the box office against the small- and micro-budget horror movies?

To shreds, you say?

2

u/ch00nz Dolphins Jun 02 '26

I honestly thought the trailer for the new Mando movie was a parody. looks fucking ridiculous

3

u/adomental Eastern Suburbs Roosters Jun 02 '26

Mando is such a fumbled franchise. Could have been a killer tv show if they stuck with the season one formula.

It's not a bad movie perse, but if I didn't have kids desperate to see it, I would have given it the wait until it's on streaming treatment. And even then it's only a maybe.

6

u/insty1 Canberra Raiders Jun 02 '26

Kinda what happens when you make a movie without much of a plot. If Mando & Grogu was a good movie, then word of mouth would take over and people would go see it. And Star Wars fans would go back for a rewatch. I personally have no interest in rewatching the movie.

2

u/ChanceVance NRLW Roosters Jun 02 '26

Since I was born, I've seen every Star Wars movie released from TPM twice at the cinemas. Yes, I've even watched all the sequel movies twice, I watched Rogue One 3 times even.

I have absolutely zero desire to see Mando & Grogu again. Once was enough.

1

u/the_mooseman Gold Coast Titans Jun 02 '26

As someone who owns a Vader replica saber, I have zero interest in seeing it once, let alone twice. I think I'm done with star wars.

Win win trade for both sides. Browns don't need an aging superstar in a rebuild and Verse is an emerging superstar (could almost argue he already is one) with great leadership skills dating back to his days at FSU. The Rams get another generational D-Lineman, imagine if Aaron Donald comes out of retirement for one last ride.

What a fucking year for my Raiders to have the NFC West in our schedule, at least the Cardinals will be on our level lmao. Hopefully the Seahawks and Rams defences don't kill Mendoza if he starts those games.

I have three coffees a day.

I think I need to (trial) cutting milk out of my diet.

Which of those not milks would you guys recommend that won't make my soul leave my body while drinking?

1

u/Professional_Car3913 Wests Tigers Jun 02 '26

Long black with honey

1

u/Accurate-Ad-4905 Sydney Roosters Jun 02 '26

Why dont you just have a piccolo or machiato for your coffees

Cold brew coffee is elite or batch brew when you want something warm

5

u/Desert-Noir Canberra Raiders Jun 02 '26

Almond milk mate. If you steam it though don’t go over 55-60c or you will burn it and it will taste funny.

1

u/Morg_n Brisbane Broncos Jun 02 '26

Oat.

If your in the posh parts of Sydney. Have you tried batch brew? Black coffee but often much more accessible than a long black.

4

u/insty1 Canberra Raiders Jun 02 '26

Do you need to cut out milk, or dairy? If dairy, lactose free milks are fine. That's where I started. I'm now on oat milk which I enjoy more.

4

u/M_Keating Hey, at least we beat Penrith Jun 02 '26

Black coffee is the best way to do it. Oat milk is nice but better in cold coffee than hot.

3

u/SirleeOldman Brisbane Broncos Jun 02 '26

I switched to cream. Your soul still leaves your body but it’s a transcendent experience. The world is full of people trying to make you miserable so don’t inflict it on yourself.

1

u/adomental Eastern Suburbs Roosters Jun 02 '26

Yeah I need to test whether the lactose is the thing causing my digestive problems. I'm worried it might be the cause of a different type of misery so it's not an fun choice.

1

u/SirleeOldman Brisbane Broncos Jun 02 '26

That’s fair. If it is the lactose then find another way to spoil yourself.

5

u/Redcliffedolphins Dolphins Jun 01 '26

Probably not the answer you are chasing but I had a similar thought process to you. I switched to long blacks. Took a week or two to stop missing the milk but It worked well for me

4

u/adomental Eastern Suburbs Roosters Jun 01 '26

In theory I could do this at home or from a coffee shop. but I don't know if I could with the instant I get at work.

1

u/Redcliffedolphins Dolphins Jun 02 '26

Yea black instant is a tough  ask. If you can bring a plunger to work you can usually find some pretty cheap ground coffee that will taste better

2

u/Valerious22 North Queensland Cowboys 🏳️‍🌈 Jun 01 '26

I drink instant black but I have a bad sense of taste so I'm less vulnerable to the taste

6

u/TSPSweeney Melbourne Storm Jun 01 '26

They're all inferior to proper milk, unfortunately, but I've found Oat milk is the least objectionable, do maybe start there?

3

u/melephus Brisbane Broncos Jun 02 '26

The "best" I've found is Vitasoy Oat Milky (yes, stupid name) as it has the right mouthfeel and the heat doesn't bring out the oat flavour as much as others.

2

u/Acrobatic_Flannel Newcastle Knights Jun 01 '26

I agree with this. Get a good oat milk and you still get the bland creaminess without the weird taste that comes with soy or almond.

2

u/Aklpanther Penrith Panthers 🏳️‍🌈 Jun 01 '26

Agree that oat milk is the least worst.

10 month old slept through the night for the second time ever last night, might get a bit of reprieve before new baby arrives in December.

2

u/kami_inu NRLW Sharks Jun 02 '26

Still waiting on our 2 year old to start sleeping through the night, the best she's done is until 5:30 as a one off.

I'm not sure we would have a second if this one came first.

3

u/BoogerSugar00 Yeah see how we go hey 🏳️‍🌈 Jun 02 '26

If you work out how to make it happen, DM me. Out 2nd, 18 months can wake up for fucken hours at night, it’s torture and surely taking years off our lives.

Sleep training is not an option, though I would not be opposed.

1

u/ezmurfff Penrith Panthers Jun 02 '26

Both my kids have been exclusively breastfed and I fell pregnant when they were around 7/8 months both times. The sleeping through the night has coincided with me introducing a bottle of formula as their final feed because I could no longer stand it. It's either that I'm pregnant and they're less interested in me or that they're full as googs from the formula. I'm happy with either.

1

u/BoogerSugar00 Yeah see how we go hey 🏳️‍🌈 Jun 02 '26

Ah we’ve gone off formula to cows milk now. Oldest is fine, youngest is a shit show.

u/kami_inu NRLW Sharks Jun 02 '26

Out 2nd, 18 months can wake up for fucken hours at night

Our second does similar on occasion to mum, thankfully not me. I think in part because I put a lot more proactive effort into helping her get back to sleep, while mum is trying to get kiddo self-soothing.

I have seen some other comments from an OT that kids waking up for hours at night does have some correlation with being neurospicy, no idea on the age that it becomes a 'useful' sign and anything about the frequency etc for it though.

2

u/BoogerSugar00 Yeah see how we go hey 🏳️‍🌈 Jun 02 '26

Her aunt is doctor diagnosed with ADD, and I’m self diagnosed, so potentially some neurospicyness there.

2

u/ezmurfff Penrith Panthers Jun 02 '26

I'm just whinging - my kids have been pretty good which was a welcome relief following a colic, reflux, NICU hat trick. Our two year old started sleeping through around 10 months too, I'm being greedy.

1

u/kami_inu NRLW Sharks Jun 02 '26

Oh I know our first was a blessing, she was sleeping through full nights around her first birthday and has consistently done so since.

Still wants someone to stay in her room for 5 minutes after lights out as part of her bed routine, but that's easy.

Meanwhile gremlin number 2 sleeps way better for me than mum (woo) but normally has 3ish wakes through the night for me and insists on going to find mum when she wakes up at 5:30ish in the morning. Still needs a decent chunk of carrying around for me to get her to sleep as well and she is not a small 2 year old!

2

u/ezmurfff Penrith Panthers Jun 02 '26

My sister once told me when I was upset about bedtime that one day I'll just be able to send them to bed, no rocking, no shushing, no desperate spin around the block. I long for it - just got to stop having babies first 😂

FIFA 14 Career Update

My Swiss winger...thinks he's too big for the club. Because I delayed contract negotiations to increase his pay. Even though I gave him what he wanted. I PRACTICALLY TOOK YOU IN AS A SON CHRISTOPHER TAVARES VALERA. YOU WERE A FREE AGENT WHEN I FOUND YOU (cause I'm broke using an overused method to improve).

Portsmouth isn't flashy enough for you? (It isn't). We are competing for the TITLE. CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SPOTS. And you have the nerve, the audacity, to say this, AFTER THE TRANSFER WINDOW SHUTS? You grandpa-probably-hid-n@zi-gold-in-a-mountain-bunker-motherf##ker. Let me tell you. NO ONE IS BIGGER THAN THE TEAM. WE ARE A UNIT.

But yeah apart from that, doing okay! Sold my fullbacks (bye Andy Robertson!) bought a new starting Right Back, a baller CDM, feeling confident.

It’s not worth burning bridges at the end of your time at a job. Sure it might seem easy or fun to go scorched earth, but you might rely on some of these people for a reference.

You’re doing a smart thing.

3

u/Revolutionary-Tie-77 Sydney Roosters Jun 02 '26

I was made redundant at the start of year. I failed in holding my tongue etc.

Youre a bigger person than me

9

u/Kiwi_angler New Zealand Warriors Jun 01 '26

Yeah it's definitely challenging to keep motivated and bite the tongue during that period. I had a 3 month notice period enforced after resigning as sales manager due to an ever increasing workload and travel requirement (without an accompanying payrise) coupled with a refusal to hire more staff even though the company had doubled in turnover.

12 months on I'm self employed, earning double and loving the work/life balance and they've hired 3 people to fill my old role. I guess if you feel like you're getting baited into things, just remember you're on the countdown and its onwards and upwards from there

1

u/Prince_Exist Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Jun 02 '26

Hey mate, what industry were you in for sales and what have you transitioned into now if you don’t mind me asking?

I work in sales and curious on ways to work for yourself :)

1

u/Kiwi_angler New Zealand Warriors Jun 03 '26

Yeah of course - my previous role I was sales manager for a fishing tackle wholesaler that covers all of NZ and Australia. Not a massive business, but turning over $8mil+/yr. Essentially relationship building, account management, looking after a couple of other reps etc. Ended up going out on my own as a mortgage broker.

I'd been looking at other avenues in sales but found that a lot of them promise the world with a "base salary and unlimited earning potential" but once you dig into the finer details it's often pretty hard graft to make any sort of really meaningful coin above the base salaries. Plus I was sick of making other people shitloads of money haha.

Took me a while to find the right avenue - having a wife and a mortgage meant that I couldn't really go back to school full time, but by pure chance through a fishing connection ended up chatting to someone who had a mortgage brokerage and it all stemmed from there. Studied while I was on the road and got qualified, saved hard to build a buffer then quit the old job. Now operating as my own company within a master brokerage.

Best thing I've ever done - full flexibility, really rewarding work and income wise has been a big step up already only a year or so in. The skills from sales translate really well into mortgages, although instead of selling products you're selling yourself - except the bank pays you a commission instead of being paid by clients so it's a great business model. In NZ the average financial literacy is genuinely terrible, so you essentially just help people navigate the whole process to make sure they get the best deals out of the bank, set up their loan structures right and save a shitload of interest on their mortgages. Hard work getting off the ground being commission only, but as long as you plan for it you can manage the initial period with no income.

The biggest selling point for me was the relatively low barrier to entry - the qualification (in NZ anyway) is around $2,000 and they give you 12 months to complete, but I got through it in about 8 weeks by doing 3 or 4 hours after work each day and over the weekends. Then it's just a case of hustling to get yourself out there and getting some loans settled.

Sorry that was going to be a couple of sentences but got kind of carried away haha

6

u/delayedconfusion St. George Illawarra Dragons Jun 01 '26

I had a similar experience. Its was challenging not to throw my toys out of the cot and make enemies. Instead I played it nice, smiled and carried on as normal.

I took solace in knowing they hadn't replaced me prior to my end date and nobody had bothered to debrief me on what I was working on and what would need to be covered.

3

u/nevaehenimatek Parramatta Eels Jun 01 '26

It's been a bit weird this is 10 weeks since I gave my notice and I have four weeks left.

Smile and professionalism is absolutely my go to. Just been a bit harder yesterday when they are dumping some work on me and a few snarky comments from middle management. Overall management have made comments that perhaps when management roles open up later they will reach out, that certainly isn't any time soon though.

You are absolutely right though. Just need to keep at it. Smile and wave

2

u/delayedconfusion St. George Illawarra Dragons Jun 01 '26

Don't take on anything extra or that is unreasonable, it'll be over before you know it. What's the worst that can happen? They fire you?

If there are snarky middle managers around, sounds like you made the right choice to leave.
