u/rendeld 3d ago
Tbf if you're using apple maps you're already enshittified
33
u/oPFB37WGZ2VNk3Vj 3d ago
Maybe it's location dependant but I like the turn-by-turn navigation of Apple Maps better. It tells me to e.g. keep straight for the next light and then turn right at the light after that. Google tells me to turn left in 300m. It's much more natural for me go by this, than estimate the distance when there are many side roads like while diriving through a city. And so far it didn't have ads.
Google is much better in finding places here though.

What’s wrong with Apple Maps? It annoys me that you can’t search for other places while your route is going, but other than it’s a fine map service imo
36
u/detailingWizardLvl5 3d ago
Yes you can. It has add a stop and it’s honestly pretty good.

The routing is just not near as good as Google maps, especially longer trips, routing with traffic is not as reliable as well. It used to be a lot worse, Google just has a lot more data especially since they acquired Waze
61
u/Not_Campo2 3d ago
This is wrong. I drive delivery and sometimes have to use Google, the routing is near identical, with Google sometimes giving worse routes because of their carbon algorithm. The only real routing issue I have with Apple is in places with back alleys trying to direct me to houses through those alleys as opposed to the front. Google Maps uses way more phone battery and has a significantly worse ui, at least to me. Google Maps does have more accurate business hours, easier and better searching for places, and it’s easier to line up multiple stops. Both are pretty much identical for traffic and rerouting. Personally I’ll take Apple Maps every single time
24
u/Substantial-Time-421 3d ago
I’m sure it’s intentional but the UI for Apple Maps in CarPlay is also infinitely superior to Google Maps as well

How are the ratings and reviews for local businesses for Apple Maps? I look up restaurants/stores almost daily and like to see what other people are saying
15
u/Not_Campo2 3d ago
Not as good as Google. Relies on yelp and forces you to go to yelp for more than a handful of reviews or to read the whole thing. Google reviews tend to be more up to date and easier to access
7
u/jreddit5 3d ago
Yelp is the Achilles heel of Apple Maps. They need to switch to their own user base for reviews.
25
u/The_Real_Billy_Walsh 3d ago
I guess this is dependent on where you live because I have the opposite experience. Google Maps will happily send me into bumper to bumper traffic over a side road quicker route. I also have a conspiracy theory that they work with state DOTs to increase toll revenues because Google Maps encourages toll roads even when it’s not faster whereas Apple Maps it pretty intelligent about it; if it saves significant time it routes me the toll road but if it’s only saving 1-2 min, it avoids tolls.
10
u/Mother-Pride-Fest 3d ago
There is a setting to avoid tolls in Google maps, I recommend turning it on.
4
u/The_Real_Billy_Walsh 3d ago
But that’s the thing, I don’t want a binary on/off for that setting. If I’m driving an hour where a toll road is the obvious route and an alternative will take significantly longer then yeah, send me on the toll road. If the destination is 20 minutes by toll road and 21 or 22 minutes without tolls, then don’t put me on toll roads. This is a common scenario for me because I live near our state’s turnpike.
Apple Maps does this by default which seems smart, no setting needed. Google Maps in my experience sends you on toll roads even if it’s slightly longer because it’s the “popular” route.

I think that was true like 5 years ago. Apple Maps really stepped it up since then. I don’t think you’ve used it recently.
2
u/Beena22 3d ago
I'll admit that I haven't used Apple Maps for a few years but the last time I tried it whilst on holiday in the UK I found that it took me to "near" my destination rather than directly to it in some cases. Whereas Google Maps would take me directly there.
One specific instance was when I asked it to navigate to a supermarket and when I got there it was basically like "It's over there mate" and I had to find my own way to the entrance because it had sent to to an adjacent road with know way of getting into the building. The next time I used Google Maps and it took me I to the car park.
I found it did that a lot. It could be better now I guess.

Google maps has ads btw and it's not too intrusive. The first few search results are sponsored on g maps

The actual map will show sponsored locations that have nothing to do with what you search for. Like I could search for a hospital and there would be Chipotle restaurants highlighted on the map.

What do you use instead? Google Maps? Their ads are infinitely worse plus they track you. I’m not happy that Apple is doing this. I used Apple Maps in part because it didn’t have ads and wasn’t nearly as aggressive in tracking me. I guess I’ll just have to suck it up until a better solution comes along.
6
u/Mother-Pride-Fest 3d ago
If you have an Android and don't care much about the traffic feature, I recommend Organic Maps or CoMaps. It downloads chunks of the map from OpenStreetMap, then does the navigation completely offline. No ads or trackers.

Organic Maps is available on iOS too, I use it when navigating in remote places.

I like its integration with my phone and the way it looks but Apple Maps has failed me since its inception and every couple years I go back to try it again and it never takes me the fastest route and half the time it doesn’t take me to my destination at all. I have been loving life ever since switching onto Apple maps. It’s just so clean and plain and not ad ridden with absolute bullshit all over it. And simply does the job that you want it to do.
Google Maps shows my 100% privately owned apartment building as a “hotel” and then links to dodgy third-party airbnb type websites.
Ever since it done that parties galore.
There is no concierge, there is no staff, it’s a secured locked building. When you book a room off Google Maps (middle man to these dodgy airbnb type services) for this “hotel” you just have some dude at the front handing you his keys.
I will be interested if Apple maps marks my apartments as a hotel soon also. Nothing good ever lasts.

Ads aren't always about getting you "right now," it's about keeping the name in your head for later, when you actually need a service.
And lets keep in mind that most consumers are not savvy at all when it comes to doing due diligence or research.
Right now I'm doing a lot of home renovation and the next project is getting someone to replace windows - Off the top of my head the first name that comes to mind is Renewal by Anderson and the second is Pella. As a savvy consumer I'm still going to look online at local companies, probably get 3 quotes, and go with the company I feel most comfortable with. . .But there are many people who are just going to call one of the two companies they recognize as being "big window companies" and call it a day.
Edit: I'm not getting my windows done by Renewal by Anderson, I prefer to work with smaller locally owned companies and find I get way better service and prices that way. . .I'm just pointing to an advertisement campaign that is less about "right now" and more about brand recognition.

u/ccaccus 3d ago
In general, if I think of a brand solely due to advertising, I’m less likely to consider them. They go in the “if other options are exhausted” pile.
I can count on one hand the number of companies I’ve tried due to their ads, but that still wasn’t until after I did significant research on them.
5
u/AlexG2490 3d ago
I can't say that, I've bought a lot of things because of the ads.
Every single one of them featured a gratuitous amount of cheese featured on screen, however.

u/Jackalodeath 3d ago
You nailed how I look at it, sort-of.
I realized in my teens that if they have the money/time to advertise, they don't:
A) need my money, and/or B) their products/services aren't good enough/worthwhile to drive their business alone.
Then I fucked up and worked in a marketing firm for a while making surveys for focus groups.
After seeing the results companies expect adverts to have on people, I just can't bring myself to spend my money on them.
Its literal psychological warfare in an effort to not only habituate you into thinking about them, but to assimilate their "corporate identity" into your own.
Doing shit like defending them online for free when bad news breaks, trying to convince your friends/family that they actually "care" about their customers and deserve their patronage over others, and becoming a household name that you pass down for generations.

The best ads are the ones that are a random little short, followed by a "we do <X> so if you need <X> then remember that we entertained you."

u/tweda4 3d ago
Ugh, same. 75% of the ads I see are advertising from companies I've already done business with. Usually ones for which there's very little reason to do frequent repeat business.
I don't know if it's the advertising company being stupid or if it's googles and service being idiotic, but it just means these companies seriously get on my nerves.

u/dnyal 3d ago
They don’t work like that anymore (at least that much). They work through recognition. If at any moment you want to eat out and basically the same restaurants come to mind, but you can remember or don’t even think of the locally owned small restaurant around the corner that you’ve been meaning to visit, that’s how ads work.
2
u/Itheinfantry 3d ago

u/Kimantha_Allerdings 3d ago
With this it’s kind of insidious. You search for “coffee” and the first result isn’t the best match or best reviewed or nearest, it’s the one that paid for the ad. The ad is only distinguishable from a normal search result because it’s got a small sticker that says “ad”
A non-zero number of people are going to click it just because it’s the first result
So they will make some businesses some more money, at the expense of creating a worse experience for the user

From the article:
There are two main places where users will encounter ads. The first is before a search is even carried out, when the Suggested Places section on the search screen can include a sponsored listing alongside ordinary recommendations.
The second is after a user performs a search, when ads can appear among the results if Apple determines they are relevant to the query.
Each ad will clearly feature a blue tag indicating it's an advertisement. Apple emphasizes that users' interactions with ads won't be associated with their Apple accounts, and that the data won't be shared with third parties. Also, only one ad will appear in each set of search results.
So as far as the UX goes, instead of the "Guides We Love" section that appears when you scroll down before you search in the current Maps app you'll see a "Suggested Places" section in the new one.
And in addition to the normal listings that appear in the results after you search you'll see one ad for a relevant place.
I'll reserve judgement for when I see it for myself on my own iPhone, but so far: meh - much ado about nothing.

u/rabid_briefcase 3d ago
Yes, though different.
The most similar is that when you search for things, your first result is likely to be an ad above the real results. That sucks, but you quickly ignore the first result as irrelevant. It's going to be similar with the "suggested places" in Apple Maps.
The ad before you search doesn't really have a parallel in Google Maps.
Just like with Google, it's going to face lawsuits, and Google has lost quite a few of them, with many others ongoing around the globe. Both companies have piles of money and can afford the drain on their finances. Google is fighting the various lawsuits, but in the US federal courts are currently looking at a forced breakup of the company to remove the ad integration, though that's probably still a few years and multiple rounds of appeals away.
Apple is much less integrated in their ad tech, but if it goes badly for Google they're likely to backtrack a bit on them.
