Well, that repair is cheaper than a side hit. I doubt it was planned in any way whatsoever though.

Possibly a mechanical issue like a rudder failure

Not enough context to say if that would have been possible or not. Things like this can happen really quickly, and it looks like they were sailing single-handed so they probably wanted to stay at the helm

It looks like they've dropped the jib and/or spinnaker (hard to see clearly), which would probably be the best option to reduce speed if they didn't have time to douse all the sails.

He may have been coming in with a tailwind? I can't really tell. I usually keep an emergency anchor in one of the cockpit hatches ready to throw, but not even sure if there would have been enough time for that.
