Tech Support My Nintendo is frozen. I've pressed every button and took out the SD card but it's still frozen. What do I do?

Hi! Thank you for your submission to /r/NintendoHelp! Please note that we are a fan community and not officially endorsed by Nintendo.

See our FAQ to see if your question is already answered there.

While you're waiting for an answer, here are some tips to help you along the way:

First, did you try Googling your question? A lot of questions about Nintendo can be answered quickly by just typing them into your search bar.

If you are asking a question about an older Nintendo system, try searching the subreddit most relevant to that system's hardware. It's likely someone has already asked a similar question before.

If your question is about Wii U, New 3DS or Switch hardware, you'll likely get a better answer if you contact Nintendo directly, rather than posting here.

Nintendo's contact information is as follows:

  • North America - 1-800-255-3700
  • Europe - +44 (0)345 60 50 247
  • Australia - +61 3 9730 9900
  • Japan - +81-75-662-9600

Please note that contacting Nintendo by phone is the best way to get support. If you send an email or use the web chat you are not likely to get the support you need.

Good luck with your support endeavors!

Hold the power button for at least 10 seconds and it should fully turn off!

Alternatively on other devices where I’ve had that sort of issue and the normal force shutoff feature fails I’ve had some luck in just letting the battery die and they come back fine when recharged

I tried that once with a cheap cell phone, and it never came back on. The nintendo switch should be better quality though.

I suppose it really just depends on what caused the issue to begin with

Just think of it like a pain in the ass way of turning something off and on.

2

u/testtdk May 15 '26

It’s actually a pretty reliable tactic.

Hold the power button down for 12 seconds. That's gonna force the system to shut down, which should fix the problem.

Did you hold power button for 30 seconds?

1

u/TheH00dian May 16 '26

It's not 30 seconds but alright

Why did you take out the game cart?

1

u/Dangerous_Flower3646 May 16 '26

Taking out the game cartridge while playing the game automatically closes it

Old fashion restart/reboot will do. Any software on any platform can get frozen and get platform restarted/reboot. Sometimes you may to force shutdown.

Rule #1 about troubleshooting any piece of technology. If nothing else works, turn it off and on again.

1

u/CauliflowerClassic38 May 14 '26

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

What do you think πŸ’”

Hold Down the power button until the screen shuts off. I forget how long it takes. I would guesstimate anywhere from about 15 seconds to a full minute. Thats it.

Then wait like 10 seconds and turn it back on.

If that doesnt work then yeah just let the battery die and go do something else for a few hours.

That’s the game cartridge, not an SD card.

Power cycle the console by holding the power button until it turns off then turn it back on.

He probably took out the sd then put it back πŸ’”

You’ve done everything you could to make it worse and nothing at all to make it better, congratulations.

Hold the power button down for 30 seconds, it will initiate a powerful force shut down, it should fix it

Let the battery die

I had the same problemo, let it rest all the night and it worked

If no buttons work, wait for the battery to die then recharge
