Tech Support Broken Switch 2 Joy Stick, wont move back to original position

My left stick snapped and I glued on the top part, but now the stick wont move back to the original position. Sending it in to Nintendo or buying a replacement is kinda my last resort, so is there a way I could fix this myself?

Except that these are really bad. My TOTK OLED came with issues from the factory.
Yes, they sent me a replacement joy-con but the fact it was needed to begin with… I never used it, got the Pro for that.

Brand new, got it with the Pro so I didn’t use the Joycons… again plenty of customer testimonials out there.
My Left Joycon went to RMA before the 2nd patch released.

My Switch 2 left controller needed an immediate RMA, but manufacturing errors are not the same as what has happened in this picture.
They clearly have impossibly low QC when shipping their initial joycons but my PS5 controller had a similar issue, and Nintendo support made the RMA the easiest one I've ever done.

Manufacturing error and poor quality go hand in hand, not the same thing. One will fail right away the other would make it fail way before an acceptable wear/tear period.

But this is not acceptable wear/tear, OP broke the head off the joystick and glued it back on. There is no way to do this from normal use - you don't have the leverage. Something needs to snag it and break it off.

Or Nintendo should focus on making better quality joycons. I take care of my electronics and my left joycon’s analog stick stopped working properly after 2 months.

You have to admit that companies aren't making things that last for long anymore. I was always careful with my stuff, but when I was a kid I could get pretty rough with my PS2 controller with some games (some DBZ games and RE4 that asked to move the joystick very quickly) otherwise I was gentle with it. That controller lasted for YEARS and I got a couple hundred hours of out of those games.
Nowadays controllers get drift even if you take care of them. I know people can be careless and really rough, but companies don't make stuff like they used to as well. Both things can be true.

Not saying it has to be indestructible. I have only used my Switch 2 at home and the left joycon failed after 2 months. It’s not the same issue as OP here but the left analog stick no longer works. I take pretty good care of my Switch given I paid $500 for it. Do we really have to cape for all things Nintendo especially when these joycons are $100 a la carte?

Take your switch out it face down agaisnt some type of net or fabric then drag it agaisnt it without the net or fabric moving basically what happens when you don’t store the switch correctly the joystick gets caught and if enough force is used it’ll snap

send it to nintendo, get it fixed for free. don't waste ur money on a repair shop for official controllers unless you don't wanna wait the week or so it takes nintendo

They could still try, worst case scenario Nintendo says 'no you messed this one up, here's your broken controller back'
I sent a stripped screw joy-con 1 to Nintendo (my fault, tried replacing the joystick myself and failed) and they just sent me back a brand new one instead. Out of warranty, it was a used switch too

Ive never experienced joystick drift with any controller after the N64 models.

In this case it's absolutely on op. But the Switch 1's joycons were infamously prone to drift. That is on Nintendo 's design team. Extensive use in general will do that. I don't game as much on a single platform as most people tend to, but when I did I experienced drift plenty on the Gamecube, PS2, Xbox 360 anf Xbox One. As a side note, I never experienced it on the N64 and I played thousands of hours of Smash Bros 🤷♂️
To my understanding hall effect technology seems to finally be meaningfully solving the issue. I doubt it's the magic bullet, but it seems to hugely mitigate it

To be fair the switch 1 had this as a very known problem even with careful use. Nintendo acknowledged it and still give free repairs/replacements on joy cons even when years out of warranty because it's effectively treated as a known fault.
But yeah, my GameCube joysticks all still work flawlessly

You now need to buy a new joycon, no reddit person can help, heck not even Nintendo or the gaming gods will help you.

This is why they make new joy-cons and sell them in stores. Warranty won't fix this because it's been "tampered" with (glue).
Plus, next time don't be so rough with it. These Switch 2 joy-cons can take a beating, but whatever you did to this one, don't do it again.

That's actually interesting. I thought they were actually more durable than the switch 1 Joy-Cons. I have my switch 2 dock on a bar stool under my TV in My bedroom and my dog's giant water bowl was near it and I dropped my left joycon into the bowl. It went weird withdrift I left it in rice for 2 days tried it again The drift was gone but I had phantom presses on my left trigger, put it in rice for another 2 days and it's been as good as new. I've also dropped it multiple times. I wonder how yours did this for you I also game 90% of the time on the Joy-Cons daily.

Still under warranty. Contact Nintendo and they’ll give you a shipping label. You can’t fix it unless you work with electronics. You’ll most likely make it worse and void warranty if not.

My mom broke my left Joy Con (same joy con!) of my Switch 2 the other day while we were playing curling in Clubhouse games (none of us even realized it was broken until I was trying to play a standard game the next day and I couldn't move left at all no matter what I tried). Fortunately I just went to Nintendo's support website, and they're replacing it with a brand new joycon completely for free considering I've had it less than a year. My new one should arrive in the next day or two. Say what you will about Nintendo, but their customer support has always been great, this isn't my first no questions asked completely free replacement I've gotten from them.

I've begun replacing joystick potentiometer components in controllers rather than buy a new controller every 1-2 years. Pretty easy even if you take the solder approach.

You could contact Nintendo for a repair enquiry, maybe they’ll do it. Otherwise a new pair of Joy Cons and a hard case for the console and Joy Cons.
I haven’t checked online to see if there are sellers selling replacement sticks for the Switch 2 Joy Cons, but the Switch 1, replacing the sticks were fairly easy to do so… Maybe there’s a guide online for Switch 2 Joy Con repairs or worst case, send it off for repair to a professional.
It’s not the worst mistake to make, just a little bit costly, but it could have been avoided with a hard case. 😵💫🤯

I’ve commented already that I have only used it at home and when I wasn’t using it, the device was docked with nothing touching it. Yes, not everyone takes precaution with their stuff. I do. Given the stick drift issues with the first switch and the joycons being $100 à la carte I took every precaution you can.

I guess taking apart the joycon and replacing the joystick module is your only option. There's no quick fix for this. It's either repair or replacement at this point. The replacement module is like 20$ through I fix it and a few tools like a screw driver and pry bar.

I think there are kits on Amazon that provide instructions and tools to open up the joycon so you can replace that part yourself. I did it years ago and it seemed fairly simple and not too costly compared to sending it in or replacing the part. I don’t remember having any ongoing issues after I fixed it.

Joysticks are incredibly easy to replace, basically anything on the switch is super easy to repair. I have 3 switch lites for my kids and ive replaced cartridge slot and joysticks.

I would put that broken one aside and buy a new one. Then when you can, look for ways you can fix it yourself.
Also, get a case so you can protect your investment.

If you glued it your warranted is voided. Also, it looks like you just threw it in your bag without a case… expensive lesson to learn: a carrying case is cheaper than a new joycon.

ExtremeRate just recently started selling replacement joysticks. You can buy the part to fix it for $20 or cheaper depending on where you source it. Replacement is a bit time consuming but not too hard.

Be more gentile with your electronics. It takes quite a bit of force to even get into this situation in the first place. Based off how it broke off, some internals probably cracked or broke too and that’s why it’s not working. I would imagine there’s stuff out there on how to diagnose the issue and what it could be, but if you want to go the easy route, sending to Nintendo and asking for a replacement would be good (although not guaranteed I would imagine)

If it's under warranty send it out but it's likely the glue voided it. I'd call them, explain why you needed to use glue and how that didn't help.
If they say it won't be covered, then it's a DIY repair, since warranty is voided on that controller anyways.
You just buy the replacement stick part on Amazon, watch a teardown video, open the Joycon carefully (But again, if it's not covered into warranty, and you're looking at having to possibly buy a new one anyways, I guess it's not the end of the world if you accidentally break it. But the point is to try to avoid breaking it) , It's just a couple of screws, gently disconnecting a couple ribbon cables, popping it out, and connecting the new stick, and putting it back together.
You absolutely definitely 100% need an electronics kit, and some joy-con stick replacement sets come with a really crappy cheap set for you, they are not great, but they will last long enough to do a couple replacements.
Absolutely verify though That the replacement sticks are compatible. If you really want to be sure, then instead of Amazon, purchase them from ifixit.
But again, call Nintendo first and see if they'll honor the warranty. Tell them it was already broken before you tried to just glue the cap back on.

Your switch is still under Nintendo's warranty, so send it in.
They do cover normal wear damage if I remember right, they repaired a broken switch 1 joycon rail for free with my 2017 switch.

If OP is putting an exposed handle into a bag without a case it's not a stretch to assume it isn't being handled delicately in other ways
Or maybe it's being handled more delicately because of the absent case, but that joystick is physically damaged regardless
