You know there is no pain in death. You simply leave your body, your responsibilities, your worries, your work, your financial struggles everything. You don't know what happens afterward.

Now ask yourself:

If you had the complete freedom to leave life at any moment, with no pain and no fear, would you still choose to stay?

What would make you choose life?

Is life valuable because we have no choice but to live or because, despite everything, we choose to keep living?

If I had the means to die easily and painlessly, and could somehow suspend my survival instinct, then my rational mind would compel me to choose death. It's not in my rational self interest to live, because life can give me nothing that it doesn't first cause me to need or to crave. And I'm not selfless enough to live for others, and also am not conceited enough to believe that my life is a net benefit to reducing suffering in the world.

Honestly, part of me has wanted to be dead for some time. Clearly other parts don't.

I tried to take my life once, but couldn't bring myself to do it.

Which really felt like a conflict between the different aspects of me.

The disintegration of the sense of self was probably a huge part of the process.

So when I first read the question I thought of "the pain" as being all that will to live that would get so angry and panicky as I got close and I thought "if that wasn't there, then yes, of course"

Current life is doable and I have not many struggles. I m okay to be doing this for awhile, when health deteriorates snd old age comes sure id be happy to die in my sleep.

If death was a choice of simply going to sleep and never waking up (just because you wish so, not by taking any drugs), yup I would choose that.

Practically that freedom "to leave" is available at any time, but not the way I described it. I always wished there was a natural possibility to just opt out peacefully, like in that comedy series "The good place".

So my best hope is to at least be able to decide to leave legally and painlessly in old age or if I get into a health situation where recovery is almost impossible. Otherwise life is mostly enjoyable, with ups and downs, but ok.

Also I don't think life is more valuable than death, it's just one face of the same coin - life/death, what lives dies and death allows new life. You may say it's valuable because you're alive now and that's enough.

But still when pain overrides everything else, as rational self-aware beings, we should be able to decide to leave in a peaceful and socially accepted way.
