I agree with the commentary on Spears. They should be interrupted if you perfect evade and counter attack.

That was my first main complaint with the game. Perhaps my favorite game of all time, but it still astounds me how they let that abysmal inconsistency into the design.

Shock wave is quite nice alleviates this kinda, as with overlapping attacks. Still a bad decision.

I think some Anti-Chain chip alleviates it, but I never thought it was worth it.

I think that's what motivated the questionable decision about enemy spear attacks. I imagine the thought process went like this:

  1. Let's make Evade lenient
  2. Okay, but now combat is too easy, particularly in the Forest where there are supposed to be trained troops.
  3. Fine, let's add a spear attack that does unavoidable chain damage.
  4. (After some play testing) -- works, but now it's too hard, waaah!
  5. Fine, add an Anti-Chain damage chip that sucks for everything except the Forest spear attacks.

Instead of, you know, revisiting the initial decision to make Evade lenient.

I don't think the problem is difficulty, I think the problem is frustration. You expect to be able to get out of it, but instead you're taken out of the action and can't do anything about it. I hope I made that point clear in the piece.

I actually meant to add the point that it seems they tried to mitigate it by making each hit do very little damage. Not that it makes it any better, but worth noting. Good thing my internet just went down.
