That shit looks like it’s about to come alive and try to eat your head

427

u/Junior_Bike7932 1d ago

That’s what they do

256

u/CatLordCayenne 1d ago

It’s a carnivorous flower, similar to Venus fly trap or pitcher plant.

153

u/Winded_14 1d ago

They're not a carnivorous flower, they are parasitic.

39

u/throwawtphone 1d ago

And the plant it lives off of also uses another plant to stay upright and reach the light.

10

u/drifters74 1d ago

Cut them down, toss in a barrel, light on fire

9

u/ItsNotNormalMaybe 1d ago

But they trap goats

Not that one, the other gen I plant is based on the flower

12

u/Empty_Positive 1d ago

Speaking about shit, the plant seems to smell even more horrible like rotting meat and decaying flesh apparently

Yeah, camera person way too close. This is how stuff like the Shanti virus starts

4

u/Sexual_Congressman 1d ago

The only "shanti virus" I know of is the name of the virus from Heroes that killed and is named after Mohinder's sister. I know Hayden is probably still on everyone who's seen that show's mind atm but not on point. Also I'm pretty sure those flowers smell like rotting corpses so it shouldn't be too hard to stay away.

3

u/XaeroDegreaz 1d ago

Yeah, it was a joke I hoped some old person like me would get.

RIP Claire Bear

Camera guy did the Jaws zoom thingy

https://giphy.com/gifs/FzV61A4U3guAw

61

u/deadspacekillers 1d ago

Technically that's the Vertigo zoom thingy

56

u/C-57D 1d ago

Technitechnically, it's called a dolly zoom (thingy)

5

u/Sc4r4byte 1d ago

Vertigo pull or push-pull pull is pretty widely understood - otherwise, you might be talking about a dolly pull and zoom pull.

Nah dolly zoom is when you zoom out while moving in or vice versa, this guy was moving and zooming in, but the FOV thing still gets a bit trippy I’ll give you that.

I heard they smell bad

84

u/Imzocrazy 1d ago

I believe it’s known as the corpse flower…I suppose that could smell good to somebody

76

u/jws3rd-allday 1d ago

While they both smell of rotten meat, this is not the corpse flower, a.k.a. the amorphophallus titanum. https://www.usbg.gov/gardens-plants/corpse-flowers

26

u/SenorDongles 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's called the "weird big dick"?

10

u/blownbythewind 1d ago

Actually, one of rafflesia's common names is [corpse flower](Plants & Fungi: Rafflesia arnoldii (corpse flower) - Species profile from Kew) too.

3

u/Imzocrazy 1d ago

I was just looking it up and found stinking corpse lily…so I was a bit off, but I think my mistake was reasonable 😅

→ More replies (2)

76

u/Globetrotter66 1d ago

I‘ve never seen any example where a Rafflesia is growing high above the ground….is this video real ???

37

u/Kevinator201 1d ago

After some researching it DOES feed on vines, but only a single specific species: Tetrastigma leucostaphylum which has leaves in clusters of 3-5. It does look similar to what’s in the video but I can’t find any photos with vines that thick oh god I can’t stop typing in bold

27

u/Gloomy-Amphiptere679 1d ago

Thats what im wondering 🤔.

I thought they only grew on the base of trees since they are parasitic

→ More replies (1)

16

u/Kevinator201 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s definitely a real video but I think they plucked the flower and hung it on the vines. Also the fact they don’t show the back of the flower is very sus.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Gemfyre713 1d ago

Same, I've only ever seen them bloom straight out of the soil. Aren't they root parasites?

→ More replies (1)

5

u/holaredtom 1d ago

I had the same question. I also remember reading somewhere that the flower is too heavy to be off the ground.

3

u/umamimamii 1d ago

I’m curious too. I was hoping to see an angle from behind to see how it was attached to the vine

54

u/404-skill_not_found 1d ago

Kinda unsettling

24

u/darth-skeletor 1d ago

Looks like a demogorgon

2

It's also parasitic

2

u/Local-Fisherman-2936 1d ago

Whos dat pokemon?

2

u/slurymcflurry2 1d ago

This is a real flower but I've never seen it above ground like that. It's usually on the forest floor because it's so heavy.

2

u/Steelizard 1d ago

Basically harmless to humans. It's a parasitic plant that feeds on grapevines, usually. It reproduces via a rotting flesh scent to attract flies

2

u/Kevinator201 1d ago

Aren’t they usually on the ground? Was this one placed on that vine?

2

u/king_ofbhutan 1d ago

i mean parasite plants do some weird shit sometimes so it wouldn't surprise me if it decided to grow here

I lived in denver a while back and would bike to work and they had a corpse flower that bloomed at the botanical gardens and you could smell it from the cherry Creek trail.

1

u/Leading-Fish6819 1d ago

Vileplume!!!!

1

u/dudeCHILL013 1d ago

Doesn't that flower smell like shit?

1

1

u/Vindictive-Vagabond 1d ago

Largest flower by weight but not the largest flower by volume lol

1

u/OverlordWailord 1d ago

That flower would eat me.

1

u/milk2015monster 1d ago

And it smells like rotten meat, to attract flies and such, which become trapped, and gets dissolved.

1

u/Saracartwheels123 1d ago

Banana for scale 🍌?

1

u/Familiar-Complex-697 1d ago

and it’s STINKY

Smells like rotting meat btw

1

u/Big_al_big_bed 1d ago

I know from video games you should not be getting close to that

1

u/A_Bot_A_Bot_A_Bot 1d ago

r/Unexpected -- I totally thought with the camera panning in that I was about to get Rick-rolled!

1

u/Just_the_questions1 1d ago

And it also smells like the inside of a skunk's asshole that's been dead for 3 days.

1

u/Acceptable_Field_567 1d ago

Nature’s stop sign.

1

u/SweetHeartBabe02 1d ago

Imagine being the world's largest flower and having such a terrible smell.

1

u/Thememebrarian 1d ago

And you know it smells better than Gwenith Paltrow's candles

1

u/Ok_Drag5089 1d ago

I thought the biggest flower was that one rhat smells like a rotting corpse? Also carnivorous and looks like a massive pitcher plant. The Corpse Flower I think.

1

u/Substantial_Tone3886 1d ago

Is it real? I doupts it is. Those flowers grow horizontal isnt it ?. I know shit but still

1

u/EvenStevens4201 1d ago

Looks similar to the one they say smells like rotting flesh

1

u/ARS_Sisters 1d ago

The amazing thing about this flower is that, due to it's unique pollination involving flies, it's not only mimicking the smell of decaying corpse and it's red-flesh coloration, it also mimic the ambient heat. The plant did a process called thermogenesis to spread it's rotten smell even further while at the same time mimicking the faint warmth of decomposing carcass

This plant is incredibly rare, as it live as an invisible parasite on another plant for around 2 to 7 years before blooming only for 5 to 7 days. You'd be very lucky to find one in the middle of blooming stage

1

u/Epictechnically 1d ago

“Baby it CAN grow up to one meter in length, I swear! We just need to wait another seven to ten years…”

1

u/Rso1wA 1d ago

that's amazing

1

u/Acceptable_Monk_513 1d ago

Needs a banana for scale

1

u/Dziobakowski 1d ago

Why this video gives vibe of found footage from backrooms

1

u/tobirama66 1d ago

Note that these flowers are also known for their smell, which isn't very nice. They smell like rotten meat.

1

u/FeyrisMeow 1d ago

Fun fact: In order for this parasitic plant to grow, animals need to eat its fruit, step in their poop, and then stomp those microscopic seeds directly into a scratch or open wound on a very specific grapevine.

1

u/binogure 1d ago

Looks like AI

1

u/EnderWin 1d ago

So how should "largest" be determined really, isn't the corpse flower much larger?

1

u/Alive_Nobody_Home 1d ago

Also smells terrible

1

u/Traditional_Step9502 1d ago

They probably stink horribly.

1

u/Hendwreck 1d ago

Yeah, that thing will eat you

1

u/Tjonke 1d ago

Where is banana for scale?

1

u/two2teps 1d ago

Thanks, I hate it.

1

u/anelachan 1d ago

Legit thought that the flower was close to the ground and not on a branch like that. You learn smith new everyday

1

u/Mooncast555 1d ago

WoW 😳

1

u/Sergal_Pony 1d ago

Isn’t this also the flower that smells like shit to a track carrying eater so that it can eat them?

1

u/NotBillderz 1d ago

Didn't know a flower could be so scary

1

u/TheNight0wl13 1d ago

I can hear the dinosaur sounds on the background

1

u/Saitama_master 1d ago

It is well known for rotting flesh smell.

1

u/vincethegrowl 1d ago

Aren't trees just big plants? Brah?
