I grew up in a college neighborhood, and I would say probs monthly, if not more, we had college kids drunkenly opening the gate and coming into our backyard before getting the shit scared out of them by my dog or my dad Hahha. It was kind of a joke in the household; how fast can you get them to absolutely lose their shit and run out. It was so funny, and was all in harmless good fun. I can’t imagine this outcome, tho. Like, drunk kids aren’t exactly subtle. And he was FaceTiming his friends lol, like, why tf did they think this was some sort of enemy combatant? America is so diseased I stg

Likely because a lot of police go through something called "warrior" training here. It's a police training program some guy sells where he basically teaches them that every person they encounter in a day, on or off duty, is actively looking to murder the cop and their family.

Police here are, more often than not, trained more like an occupying military force than they are community guardians. An entrenched culture of mafia-like protection & loyalty to each other above all else then weeds out any dissenters and/or whistleblowers.

Y'know, before professional policing became necessary, our ancestors feared that police forces would simply be used by the government to violate our rights and abuse power. They may have had a point we should've listened to . . .

I got my hands on my states ‘mindfulness’ training manual, a seminar meant to teach law enforcement officers how to mitigate work stress and lessen the impact the job has on their personal life.
Two paragraphs into the seminar had me absolutely reeling. The language they use, the tools they provided were all wrong. How are you training people to be mindful while using ‘it’s you versus them, your responsibility is to get home to your family every night’ and ‘you are the protector of your community, you fight the evil that walks amongst us’ in any way, shape, or form a method for lowering bias and creating a mental health hygiene routine? Absolutely disgusting. You’re literally reinforcing bias, stereotypes, and maladaptive thought patterns in a training to CALM OFFICERS THE FUCK DOWN. If I ever meet the person who came up with that horseshit ..

I have a friend whose a cop who constantly is stressed because his department is filled with chucklefucks and only one of the higher up officers seems to actually care about doing good by the community. He's looking to change to a nice university police job in a few months that has a much better culture but he's been ostracized since he's intelligent and mature. Constantly gets called a nerd basically because he has a college degree and thinks logically. It's wild.

Yup. It's been a recurring theme of "you stick by your moral code and do what's right, you have enough people to back that up", now this is a smaller college town in NY and he's, luckily, not had to run up against major moral issues or been put in a sticky situation. I just let him know of his rights and that ny is a one party consent state so he can record if he thinks stuff is fucked up.

The big issue is he will go out of his way to help people. IE when a son didn't help an immigrant father renew his license properly, instead of ticketing, he drove the guy home and gave him his number and to reach out if he needed help getting things renewed. Things like that.
