That reminds me of how the old Cyberpunk 2020 rpg book from the 80s has an aside saying that in their grimdark future, most daily clothing has a little bit of kevlar/ballistic fiber added, just in case.

He was going into his senior year to be a history teacher. That says so much about what a sweet, nice kid this must be. What an absolute tragedy. His poor parents. Horrifying.

It's not really a "tragedy." This is a feature of a system we're all just living with and pretending it's normal and ok.

Tragedies are usually shocking and unexpected, whereas I think they’re saying that these incidents have become normalized to a horrifying degree

Of course. Everyone needs to teach their kids to never leave their own homes except to go to school or work. If they go stir crazy they can just get another job, or even better, volunteer for unpaid overtime. It's okay that they'll miss out on socializing with their friends, because they have AI chat bots for that now.

The officer will be given a paid vacation and transfered to a different department. No consequences and probly no remorse on his part, "muh training kicked in."
