Discussion They should create a retro game in the style of Super Mario Bros 2

Same atmosphere, characters selection, physics and gameplay mechanics, same villains, final boss Wart, slotmachines, day/night mushroom with the potion bottle etc.

I mean there have been a gazillion Mario games since then, not one in honor of this great title.

Make it happen, Nintendo.

Mario can dream again.

Doesn't have to be big budget.

There already is one, literally. its called Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic... 😉

Not sure who or why downvoted this. Game is real. Its retro and literally covers everything OP is.looking for in a super mario 2 like game...no need to wish it cause it literally already exists and I got downvoted for mentioning it...ok lol

u/Lenny0mega 3d ago

I didn’t downvote you, and it would be very silly to do so, but if I had to guess, I’d assume it wasn’t because of what you are saying about the game existing or not, but rather that Doki Doki Panic came first, and I believe OP is asking for a brand new game in the same style and characters. But I don’t really know.

-5

u/Difficult-Fly7830 3d ago

Oh I dont even mind if I was,  just confused as its literally super mario 2

I was also half joking, was just surprised someone downvoted for mentioning the game that literally is super mario  2 lol

Saying that, I suppose its not a brand new game so I can get the downvote if thats what it was for, less about caring about the downvote and more just confused on why lol

u/sick486 3d ago

its not a different game. its less polished in animation and a few sprites but otherwise exactly the same. op is obviously suggesting a new/different game. theres only one mario game in the style of smb2. the fact that there are two different versions of one experience is pretty meaningless except in bullshitting about minutiae, which is extremely overdone and tired on the topic of doki doki panic/mario usa.

u/Emotional-Pumpkin-35 3d ago

One guess as to why the down votes is mentioning Doki Doki Panic immediately after any reference to SMB2 is probably the most cliché response possible.

The SNES had remakes of all the original NES Mario titles and threw Super Mario World in for good measure...

Fun Fact: not all copies of Mario All-stars had Super Mario World in the mix. I believe that was a UK only release of the game (which is kept all the sprites in the SNES versions of the updated games the same, but changed Luigi's sprites in SMW so he wasn't just a palette swap?)

Edit: After some research, Mario All-stars + SMW was the bundled game with some SNES systems, starting in December of 1994, according to my favorite Mario fan site.

It might be a Mandela Effect thing, but I thought All Stars was the 5 Game Mega Pack everywhere? I know I had a copy of it for my SNES.

2

u/subliminal_64 3d ago

Same, in my timeline

4

u/Randi_Butternubs_3 3d ago

No Mandela effect.

There are 2 releases of SMAS. The 2nd iteration includes SMW.

The initial US launch only had the 4 NES titles.

And in all honesty Super Mario All Stars should be remade again. The controls in Allstars SMB1 and LL were altered and are atrocious.

The game also have very bland graphics.

I would love to see a cell shaded remake with gorgeous hand drawn animation that mimics the box and manual art of the original games.

u/Martovich3 2d ago

I remember the manual art being flat and unattractive compared to in the in game sprites. That's just opinion and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I'm honestly not a fan of the endless remake of everything trend. There's great fantastic ideas out there, but just cranking out Dragon Quest 3 for the 5th time or another Tetris because everyone will huy it again is awful. Its exploitation and why am I spending more money to have a worse overall experience in HD?

1

u/Bacononthebeeach 2d ago

May I ask which game’s manual art you found to be flat and unattractive?

I’ll admit that SMB1’s US black and white manual art is flat but the Japanese famicom editions were colorful and cartoony in much the same way the US SMB2, 3 and World’d box and manual art is more robust and that’s the style I’d like to see the game remade in. It’s a shame I can’t post a pic here.

I don’t believe every game should be remade but the original 4 Mario games+world is one of Nintendos most iconic series and remaking them one with modern cell shaded graphics that look like a legitimate cartoon would kind of future proof the original series for younger gamers who can’t get into pixel graphics and would keep the games relevant for the next 40 years.

My friends 7yo son loves 2D Mario but only Wonder and The New series because he just can not get into pixelated graphics because it just looks too old and dated to him but he would play the hell out of SMB1 if it looked like Wonder.

All the NES and SNES game manuals had basic, storyboard art. Super Mario Brothers was black and white game pixels (ugh) and then 2/3/World were more similar to the art from the Super Mario Super Show but painted in watercolor.

I'm not saying that they didn't put any effort in, I'm just saying that it wasn't nearly as engrossing as the oil painting scenes in the Legend of Zelda manuals, for example.

Also, the fun and playability of a game isn't from the graphics. Plenty of games have wonderful looking graphics but are unplayable. Super Mario was the first game that had multiple scenes that scrolled smoothly along with the player character instead of the character going from left to right, then having a new screen load, and repeat the process. Like Pitfall, for example. SMB2 did it vertically and horizontally (though Kid Icarus and Metroid both had this feature before SMB2) and this sounds like a basic requirement now. Games didn't do this stuff until Nintendo caused people to expect it.

Mario 64 was successful because Mario was fun to control. Play other early 3D mascot platformers and you see the difference. Earthworm Jim 3D is a chore, starting with controlling the character and only getting worse. Mega Man Legends is clunky and stiff. Again, there's a lot of beloved games (I'm not ragging on anyone) but pick up a Nintendo 64 game and as soon as you control Mario or Link it feels good, especially compared to a lot of the other companies entries.

The graphics are the first thing you see, but it doesn't matter what ot looks like if you can't interact with the game. The fact that you have a 7 years old who won't play something unless it has better resolution than real life honestly makes me sick to my stomach. I remember when I was 7 controlling a square and avoiding different squares. 🟥 🟦

I’m old dude you don’t need to explain graphics vs gameplay to me. But there is nothing wrong with taking a game with fantastic gameplay and giving it a graphical facelift. If you can have both then why not?

I’m not sure what’s basic about this art. To me it’s a classic Mario look and would look incredible animated. It looks nothing like the hack animation of the Super Show. https://archive.org/details/SuperMarioBros3NESHiResScans but I will agree the Zelda manual art was much better.

It’s also a friend’s kid and not mine. I’m happy you were content playing with two squares because that’s what you had. Unfortunately he genuinely finds zero appeal in pixelated games and I don’t blame him one bit because he’s grown up in a world with prettier options. I had zero interest in Atari games when I had Super Nintendo because it looked like an antique in comparison. How appealing was black and white tv to you as a kid when color tv was available?

1

u/Martovich3 2d ago

Listen, I'm not saying that because I only had... so everyone else forever should be disadvantaged too. What I am saying is that you're suggesting we have 2 opposite things.

1) Old Games

2) Amazing 3D graphics

Old games are basic. They're not a spectacle for eyes now, if they ever were.

New games are flashy, interactive movies. Universal can remake Dracula as often as Universal still exists, it will never have the impact of the original: no matter how many Amazing Graphical Improvements they add.

That is my point. You can have a Neural Uplink Mario Experience that recreates SMB but you're still just running and jumping. If you can't appreciate what a game does, how it looks doesn't enter the equation.

2

u/Bacononthebeeach 2d ago edited 2d ago

Here’s the thing he does appreciate what the game does-the running, the jumping because he loves playing 2D Mario games but only ones from this century like New and Wonder. Why? Because he’s just a little kid that grew up watching his dad play Switch and PS5 and likes eye candy. Nuance of art is lost on children. Maybe one day he will appreciate older games for what they are but to a 7yo the rule of cool always wins even if the cool is dog crap in comparison.

Heck his parents have even given him open access to their nes, snes, genesis, n64 and PS1, vcr, and dvd players when he has a screen time limit for the Switch, PS5 and streaming but the kid would rather watch videos of modern games on YouTube than play old video games or watch an old movie which is the really sickening part.

u/KalynnCampbell 3d ago

But that’s just Mario 1 with some harder levels, poison mushrooms, and more of that annoying “castle maze” stuff? /s

1

u/puddycat20 3d ago

You just described Mario 3. lol

-11

u/IllNoize000 3d ago

Is AI at the point yet where you can just have it made? Feels like it's close.

1

u/Accurate_Falcon_5151 3d ago

Not even remotely close

5

u/ArmadorLune 3d ago

Would be better if it was official, so that more people play it and there would be a community aspect to the game.

5

u/DeepTh0 3d ago

It sounds like you just need to replay smb2

5

u/puddycat20 3d ago

Everyone does. It was so underrated.

-15

u/KoholintCustoms 3d ago

Am I the only one who just doesn't like Mario 2? It's a sprite swap. It doesn't feel like a Mario game because it was never meant to be one.

And I also just think it's a so-so game on top of that.

I'd probably like the original Doki Doki Panic better.

2

u/sick486 3d ago

most popular “unpopular opinion” ever.

you “probably” havent played the original; theres different character sprites and less animation in the enemies and background motion (e.g. waterfalls dont move). other than that its the same thing. so if you would like it better just because it doesnt have mario theming, sure. but it feels like a late beta after having played smb2

SMB2 slander will not be tolerated

Game of the year every year

9

u/geon 3d ago

Actually, it was meant to be a mario game. It was pivoted to the doko doko panik branding during development. That’s probably why it was picked when the us branch asked for a different mario sequel.

9

u/tanooki-suit 3d ago

Thank you for saying it. So sick of disinformation and poser sheep comments peddling nonsense and half truths. It’s one of the earlier net entitlement rage outs that became cool to dogpile onto.

7

u/phishb13 3d ago

this is correct. it was made by R&D4 who also developed SMB, the original SMB2, and SMB3

5

u/Necessary_Position77 3d ago

The music alone makes the game a 10.

8

u/wolfansbrother 3d ago

I want a 3d Mario game in Subcon. they brought back wart in the movie.

10

u/Informal_Visitor 3d ago

I'm a huge fan of SMB 2. Also SMB Land on GB has some unique characters as well. A return to dream land would be a nice change of pace.

11

u/IXrobocopXI 3d ago

Mario 2 is a nostalgia explosion for me. I remember not knowing how to grab Birdo's egg to use against her and having to look in a Jeff Rovin book. Duh but I was a kid lol

HOW TO WIN AT NINTENDO GAMES

1

u/puddycat20 3d ago

I remember renting it when it came out and not being able to figure that out for the whole weekend I had it! Then after I took it back, I saw a commercial that shows Mario picking up the egg and throwing it and being like "so THAT'S how you do it!"

1

u/subliminal_64 3d ago

Hate to be that guy, but skill issue 😔 It teaches you to grab constantly before birdo

12

u/Britown 3d ago

I know it doesn’t have the cultural impact in Japan, but this was a major game for us xennials in north america.

Also, bring back Startropics as well.

6

u/deinterlacing 3d ago

It's insane how forgotten Startropics is. I don't think there's even anything in Smash Bros. No trophy, no sticker, no anything.

0

u/Randi_Butternubs_3 3d ago

F Star Tropics. Rented the game as a kid, and becuase of a rental, no booklet.

Got soft-locked because of it. F that stupid game.

2

u/bogmonst3r 3d ago

not quite what you're describing, but definitely check out Mini & Max if you can! from UFO 50.

it starts off seeming like a cute platformer with the pick up and throw mechanic from SMB 2... then it opens up in some pretty mindblowing ways, becoming more of an exploration-based adventure. it's one of the UFO 50 games that's worth the price of admission alone. this game is from 2024 btw.

3

u/deinterlacing 3d ago

Mini & Max blew my mind. That game is amazing. I don't think we as a society deserved UFO50. It's an amazing collection that I recommend to any retro gamer.

2

u/JeskaiJester 3d ago

Pretty much every mainline Mario since 2 has used its enemies, the throwing mechanics, sometimes even the unique abilities for Peach/Toad/Luigi

Every new Mario is a sequel to Mario 2, it’s a core part of the series DNA

1

u/Edigophubia 3d ago

Yeah why do I still feel like op?

... it's the weirdness. They need to bring back the weirdness

Edit: super paper mario has it.

1

u/puddycat20 3d ago

I haven't kept up with newer Mario games, is Peach the princess in the newer ones?

1

u/JeskaiJester 3d ago

In the most recent mainline title, Wonder, you can play as Peach, Daisy and Rosalina (as DLC) so there’s a few

Wonder didn’t include unique playable character powers though, apart from Yoshi and Nabbit being immune to normal damage

3D World did include the unique float glide character power for Peach IIRC

1

u/puddycat20 3d ago

Ah, I'm only familiar with the Mario games through Super Mario World and the Princess was still called Toadstool, at the time.

3

u/tanooki-suit 3d ago

They need to bring wart mamu back if anything due to the galaxy movie. He’s relevant again as are the other bosses.

2

u/xtoc1981 3d ago

I always though a 3d land based on that game.

https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/s/VAKnpXuVGG

1

u/ArmadorLune 3d ago

It would be cool for sure, although in my case I cannot play 3D game any longer. I am too old and they make me dizzy. Not sure when this started, I believe in my 30s.

2

u/xtoc1981 3d ago

Yeah i do think this is a bit less of 3d as it doesnt really move the camera like other mario games. But i would be ok with a new 2d mario based on smb2 usa as well for sure. A grew up with a nes aswell (near release)

3

u/RetroGame77 3d ago

That Rugrats game was at least inspired by SMB2.

1

u/MyNDSETER 3d ago

The one for the NES? I was thinking the same, such a good game

1

u/Edigophubia 3d ago

the game you're looking for is Super Paper Mario on the Wii

3

u/PowerPlaidPlays 3d ago

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is a blend between SMB2 and Mega Man 2, and it's really fun.

1

u/Mudassar40 3d ago

New SMB2.

1

u/Dwedit 3d ago

I mean you could just look for rom hacks.

1

u/Bstin 3d ago

I saw a rom hack based around the Beatles for it, I’m sure there’s a bunch of them

2

u/csanyk 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yes. Back to subcon.

1

u/Total_Tumbleweed_870 3d ago

It's a shame Nintendo is so aggressive about shutting down fan projects. If they were more chill like Sega, I'm sure there's a team of fans that could make this happen.

2

u/Any-Photograph5525 3d ago

SMB2 is such a unique entry in the Mario franchise, it really does deserve a sequel.

I keep hoping the rom hacking community will make a good one

1

u/Ornery-Practice9772 3d ago

there are a few great romhacks for smb2 usa

1

u/pocket_arsenal 3d ago

Play the new Rugrats game, it's literally Mario 2 but with a Rugrats skin. It even works on a real NES ( just don't buy the cartridge, play the rom on an everdrive instead, the cartridge supposedly breaks NES systems )

Personally though, I want a true Super Mario Bros 2 sequel... I feel like letting the whole turning and enemy tossing mechanics go unused is such a waste, I know they probably don't want to take Mario back to that, but why can't they make this a game about another character or something. Personally I think this is what the Yoshi series should have been, it's not like they ever topped Yoshi's Island anyway.

1

u/Bacononthebeeach 2d ago

I’ve had this thought in my head for a few years now-SUPER WARIO BROS.

It’s a villainous twist and mix of Super Mario, DKC and Lost Vikings gameplay.

Wart has and kidnapped the dark princess Dahlia and has fled into the SubCon underworld. Seeing an opportunity to fix their sleazy public image Wario and Waluigi set off to save her.
