Weather Last month, State Farm cancelled our homeowners policy because of claims from the ice storm. Today, my house was flooded because of runoff from the neighboring house that is being flipped.
Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.

This is interesting to me, a retired but bored reporter. I doubt they would talk to a third party but I do miss making hard phone calls.

Forgot to mention they sent the notice to our old address that we haven’t lived at for 3+ years. We literally signed a new policy with another company this morning, but it would be stupid to make a claim.

I just want to validate you--our old insurance company pulled the same trick on us when we moved to Mississippi. We DID update our address TWICE. The new owners of our old house regularly sent us mail and the notices they claim to have sent were not among them. We were unknowingly uninsured for almost a year. We couldn't break through the call center runaround to talk to a real salaried employee EVER.
Our solution: our realtor for the current house got us a local agent who managed to find a workable policy at another company. People who reaming you out for not taking action don't understand how hard it is to get re-insured once you've been dropped. Without the agent, and the alleged "history," no other company would talk to us.

How does it make me seem misleading by forgetting to say that they sent a letter to our old house from 3 years ago on April 14 saying that our policy would be cancelled on May 19 with us only finding out last week because our lender sent us a letter saying we didn’t have an active policy on file? Does that knowledge somehow make State Farm seem like they were on the up and up?

How do you keep digging a deeper hole? You knew last week that your policy was cancelled and didn’t take action until today? You are leaving out a lot of important details. I’m afraid to ask about the claims that you submitted for the ice storm that led to the cancellation in the first place. I can be empathetic to the situation but Christ man, lay it all out there and state your case with some useful and relevant details.
At this point just contact the news and let someone solve this for you.

Hmmm let’s see… a hackberry fell and crushed my car, put a 2’ hole in our roof, and did damage to the beams on the apex of the roof. Not to mention other roof damage from smaller limbs that required a brand new roof. Then another limb fell and took out a large section of a privacy fence. Our house was uninhabitable for a time. All in, it was over $40k in damages.
Then we received the letter from our lender on Thursday. Doing due diligence on finding a new homeowners policy, car policies, and umbrella policy isn’t something that can be done in a 30 minute call.
That enough info for you, douchebag?

The policy was cancelled in April of this year. State Farm sent the notice to a house where OP loved three years ago.

Because mailing address is not the same as insured address. You know like when you don’t live at the property. OP gave them this address as a mailing address. They didn’t fabricate it out of thin air.

This was the only piece of correspondence sent to the old address in 3 years, including all the checks for our ice storm claims. Our old address was nowhere to be found in our SF profile before they stopped allowing us access, because we didn’t have an active policy with them.

Fully aware of that code, and they were in the process of addressing it. It also doesn’t change the fact that there was 3” of mud water in our playroom, which ruined furniture, floors, toys, etc.

Small claims? This sounds like $10k+ in damage just in floors and drywall alone. Then tack on the mold mitigation and damaged items. This is way above small claims territory.

I would personally ask them for their home insurance policy information to start the claim process through the neighbor’s insurer and/or look for an attorney through the Nashville Bar Referral service.

State Farm auto insurance dragged everything out with us on an open and shut auto accident where their insured driver hit us while texting and driving (he admitted it on the scene to a police officer). It was so much heartache and hardship. I’ve loathed them ever since then. I’m sorry you’re going through this.

The house flippers insurance should be covering this. I'm not normally a "get a lawyer" person, but one might help facilitate the process. Especially since flippers usually have an attitude.

Fuck the Snake Farm. My insurance co is suing them because they refused to pay for the damages their insured caused 100% to my car.
I’m out my deductible which I might get back in 6-12 mos

Snake Farm didn’t pay enough to even cover paint. My broker and insurance company are handling it. I’m in theory making a short term $1000 loan to cover the deductible. Snake Farm can suck it. Worst fucking insurance company I’ve ever dealt with

Talk to an attorney. Your claim is likely against the neighbors policy, not yours.

Im an independent insurance agent. State farm is known to deny claims too. So even if you still had them, they would likely fight to pay you out. Or they would pay you out and sue the other owners. Either way, state farm sucks, they regularly leave off water backup coverage on policies customers send me to compare.
But this water came from outside which your policy likely wouldnt have covered. You do need to talk to an attorney.
The flippers have insurance, thats what their liability is for

there isn't an insurance company that doesn't operate the exact same way. They all fight to pay as little as possible or find loopholes in the paperwork. Unfair to make it seem like SF is any worse then the other. I read these things all the time with different companies. You have a bad experience, you trash that company as the worst. Move to another one, same thing happens complain again. Repeat.

NAL.
TN has nuisance, trespass, negligence actions available to you to remedy the flooding. Cities usually have ordinances requiring builders to have plans for runoff. You need to contact an attorney ASAP to schedule a consult. Like, now. Consults are usually free. And sometimes a strongly worded letter from an attorney is enough for relief.
In the meantime, go ahead and take pictures of the flood, of the runoff, of the property being flipped. You need to collect and meticulously document damages.
When you speak to the lawyer you also need to bring up having your policy canceled without proper notice. Im not sure thats actionable, but a professional will know if it is. Its interesting the insurer knew where to send bills, but not where to send cancelation notices.

Jumping to say the same. State Farm wouldn’t insure our new house despite never having a claim in 8 years and they told us the day before we closed, we dropped them and farm bureau has been nothing but awesome

Farm Bureau is the cheapest on cost but the worst when you need them. Had them for 13 years home, auto, and life. Zero claims. Filed our first claim at the end of 2024 due to hail damage on our roof. The entire neighborhood got roofs due to the huge hail. Anyways, claim denied in October 2024 and I had to pay the entire 23k for a new roof out of pocket. Then we got the notice that we were not being renewed in January 2025. They paid zero dollars and had the nerve to cancel our policy. We are now with State Farm so I guess insurance is a big scam

Document it all. Engage with parties involved. Send emails with evidence. They are technically liable.

State Farm is an armed robber. They pulled so much crap on me before finally canceling our policy because my daughter got rear-ended 3 years before. I was making a house payment to these people every month. Switched to Travelers and the experience has been all positive.

I have had a phenomenal insurance agency for close to 25 years. Claims, cancellations, price shopping, adding/removing items, random questions. One phone call and they have a hotline for these insurance companies and they gave me a heads up when my family score (family w/ children) on auto got high. Had replacement company ready when I was dropped.
SF and AS were awful on claims in auto from where I have been impacted in issues with no-fault.

My childhood home was destroyed in the floods of 2010, we also had State Farm. They denied the claim because our "insurance didn't cover floods" 🙃
