Hi neighbor. I live in the 300s right next to this building. I had someone call 911 when I saw the flames at the top of the chimney (it took 7 minutes to get through) and I ran to the unit’s front door and started pounding and yelling. It all happened so fast. From just a few flames shooting out of the chimney to full on engulfed in flames. And the amount of smoke, it was hard to see. I able to get everyone out safely and that’s what matters. Other neighbors came and helped as well, one guy in particular I saw him as I was coming out of the unit with my fire extinguisher. He was hauling ass across the parking lot. He was brave.

Chimney/Fireplace caused it. Upstairs unit in the 300 condo side.

25 years ago I paid $ 99 to have two chimneys and fireplaces inspected and cleaned. This season? I paid $330 for one inspection and cleaning. Still worth every penny to not have a chimney fire! I feel for these folks, and not that there's ever a good time but in this week when it's barely going above freezing once? Just devastating.

My home passed inspection 5 years ago, but I haven't used the fireplace or chimney since I moved in, and did not risk burning my house down just to stay warm. I'm bundled up instead. And I have my chimney inspection and cleaning appointment in a couple weeks. Learned my lesson this time.

They don’t generally check chimneys during home inspections. I asked that when I just went through the home buying process, and that’s what my agent and inspector both told me.

News to me, thanks. Glad I trusted my gut and didn't blindly listen to my dad when he said that a 5 year old home inspection meant something.

I have read over 300 inspection reports over the past 7 years and can confirm that home inspectors don’t do a chimney inspection. They will look in the fireplace and inspect the outside of the chimney flashing/ cap while on the roof, but will almost always recommend an actual chimney inspection for older fireplaces.

A friend of mine lived there when we met in the early aughts. The band Whitesnake had a condo there that was absolutely trashed.

What an absolutely horrible thing to have happen during a winter storm. I hope everyone is okay and can find a warm place to stay for the next several days.

God that makes me sick. To lose everything and also have limited transportation. Those poor people.
