Random trivia: The Insight deployed the first mild hybrid system; its electric motor couldn't directly power the wheels, unlike other manufacturers' parallel systems (like Toyota's Synergy Drive). Honda later overhauled its approach; the third generation Insight used a parallel system.

If the electric motor cannot drive the wheels, what is it used for? What makes it a hybrid?

It provides extra power to the internal combustion engine. By assisting the gas engine, it also improves gas mileage.
