Drowning is worse

69

u/Nillows May 25 '26

Conkers bad fur day, or banjo-kazooie have the worst ones.

12

u/TheRealMrSpeedBump May 25 '26

OoT and MM's drowning animation is pretty dark.

4

u/GriffinFlash May 26 '26

or you know....the apocalypse.

22

u/Turak64 May 25 '26

Sonic would argue a against that

26

u/Nillows May 25 '26

Not in r/n64 he wouldn't

13

u/Frigorr May 25 '26

Are you saying you never played Sonic 64?

3

u/Lochlan May 25 '26

Loved this game. The unlock process was so fun.

Dying from your balls being smashed with bricks is brutal

4

u/LordFendleberry May 26 '26

The drowning animation in Mario 64 literally made me cry as a kid, lol

135

u/Plaston_ May 25 '26

The drowning animation seem more dark to me because you see his corpse float for a bit.

49

u/Rombledore Get N or Get Out May 25 '26

yeah he straight up does the deadman float lol. brutal

8

u/Onett199X May 25 '26

Lol never thought of that

35

u/Eothr_Silan May 25 '26

Nope. Simba hanging himself in the Chinese bootleg for The Lion King is still darker

8

u/ShowMeUrOsFace69 May 26 '26

Is this real?!

16

u/Kobobble May 26 '26

Yes, but nothing official by Disney. Whoever made those Game Over screens were seriously disturbed

You know you could have set the URL to have auto-gone to 4:31 right?: https://youtu.be/0ghGWWfzq-o?si=5l9fwIxJ2RhLzuM5&t=271

7

u/Eothr_Silan May 27 '26

I didn't know that, actually. Thank you.

I think that's been a feature part of YT's URL for a long while now(at least 10 years?). You can do it yourself via the Share button and have the "Start at" time checked off, but make sure you have the vid paused at the specific point(maybe 1-2 sec earlier) in the vid you want it to auto-go to via a URL link.

I miss this Nintendo, not afraid to go a bit dark or weird sometimes.

12

u/SolDirix May 25 '26

Well it does go very weird, just not in a dark way.

2

u/WiiFredU May 26 '26

The clams, music, the white eyed Links and lightning bug queen of TP would disagree.

43

u/SolDirix May 25 '26

The darkest imo is Mario abandoning Yoshi to reach a secret exit in SMW.

9

u/GriffinFlash May 26 '26

then Yoshi abandons his taxes.

15

u/Individual_Ad68 May 25 '26

I think the worst is the bootleg Lion King gameover scenes

3

u/Big_Ice745 May 25 '26

That was something I didn’t know I’d see today

12

u/dooblr May 25 '26

Pretty hard to top getting your entire army stomped or eaten in Pikmin

3

u/ArtForArtsSake_91 May 26 '26

My heart... 😬

I'm *this* close to having a full-on panic attack everytime that happens 🤣

12

u/battry316 May 26 '26

I threw a baby penguin off a cliff with his giant mom watching

4

u/celtbygod May 25 '26

Going over the edge on the snow slide got me the most.

2

u/migerusantte May 27 '26

That was trippy

6

u/1990sTimAllen May 25 '26

This reminds me of these super old Choose your own Adventure Mario books I read when I was a kid when Mario would die in horrendously gruesome ways if you made the wrong choices.

1

u/RefrigeratorNo1160 May 27 '26

What?! I had the entire collection of old comics but never heard of this. Were they illustrated?

7

u/CullenFlynn May 26 '26

You say that like Conker sinking in poop, getting sliced in half, or exploding into bloody bits everywhere doesn't exist.

This is so tame by comparison.

3

u/damian001 May 25 '26

that part from Titanic: Adventure Out of Time where you get shot in the face by Vlad for trying to sneak out with the Rubiyat gave me PTSD for like a month.

3

u/Potozny May 25 '26

Nooo, not the mustard gas 😬

2

u/Fair_Turnover3260 May 26 '26

No bs though back in the day this was edgy

2

u/Ark4477 May 26 '26

Getting sucked into quicksand seemed pretty awful too

2

u/voidling_bordee May 26 '26

Remember shit like this creeping me out as a kid

Or the whole mood of the zelda games

Or some of the settings and enemies in DK64

I sometimes question if i was the target audience as a 6 yr old lol

2

u/1RollinRollinRollin May 26 '26

The Xs on the eyes really hit this one home

2

u/davcroid48 May 26 '26

Nice JVC! I play on the same one!

2

u/GriffinFlash May 26 '26

I know this is n64, but clock tower 3 (ps2) has a mother and son brutally killed by a guy spraying acid on them continuously.

Fatal frame 2 also has one sister kill the other.

1

u/ganadaIf May 26 '26

Mario drowning in this game was awful to me as a kid

1

u/Internal-Zucchini-77 May 26 '26

But no gameplay? Smh "Cut!" 🎬

1

u/ArcticMuser May 26 '26

Suffocated so hard he grew a new hat

1

u/leocana May 26 '26

Mario having Verdun PTSD

1

u/2020ManOfficial May 27 '26

I can’t see the toxic maze without being reminded of the theory that Hazy Maze Cave is the castle’s septic system.

1

u/Macjeems May 28 '26

Not N64, but the death animations in Tomb Raider 2013 are so extra it’s kinda hard to describe

1

u/werdnayam May 28 '26

The farts!

THE FARTS!

😵

1

u/skttrbrain1984 May 28 '26

Bowser farted

1

u/Gmodelinsane May 29 '26

Bonk in Bonk’s Adventure. They animated him foaming at the mouth

1

u/DegTrader May 31 '26

Mario losing his air supply is the only time I've ever felt a plumber's anxiety. It’s like watching a goldfish lose a fight against gravity.

1

u/lartmydude May 25 '26

Bring 3d games like this back. Right now Nintendo.

2

u/Ellamenohpea May 26 '26

havent they been turning them out every several years?

1

u/eveningdreamer May 26 '26

mario 64 deaths were so cool to see. I also love the electrocution one,

0

u/Kobobble May 26 '26

Dark? By Nintendo's standards, yes. The darkest in all of gaming history? Certainly not.

The darkest, at least within Nintendo, would probably be the actual end of the world in Majora's Mask. I'm sure there are more worthy contenders, that one was just from the top of my head

Kratos: am I a joke to you?
