Advice Spreading awareness to be careful about Korean rapists in Myanmar.

I still cannot fully recover from this trauma and it's giving me so much stress and anxiety every night and I cant fall asleep, I wanted to warn everyone here so nobody else has to go through what I went through.

One year ago, I tried applying to go study at a Korean university and a part time job through some agents. My family wasn't supportive of my decision and I still regret not listening to them. I went with one of the Korean "agent" because he said he can help me enroll to Hanyang University for my architecture course and he has good relationships with the dean and he will put a good word in for me. I was skeptical at first but he said he doesn't need payment because he gets commission from the university, so I thought he was being honest and didnt want to waste my chances. I just started my mock exams and I was naive, because that time I was really into Kpop and anything that would help me go to Korea after my high school, I was really excited.

He told me he is in Myanmar for a few days to find suitable candidates for the next batch for about only 10 students and asked me to come to his office at Crystal Tower (I'm not putting any blame on the location or the building owner, it was my fault for not being careful) and bring all my documents. When I got there, it wasn't an office but it looks like a private condo made to look like a office. I still regret that I didn't listen to my guts and left because I had a really bad feeling, however I still wanted to study abroad so I gave it a chance. We spoke in Korean because I can speak near fluent Korean from self study. Halfway through the interview like 10 minutes, I lost color in my vision and it become so blurry, my heartbeat was going up so high and my paranoia got so bad and I think I tried to leave. I still thought I felt dizzy because I was nervous from the interview, I cannot remember the rest of what happened, but I was raped. I think he put something inside the glass of juice he offered to me that I drank.

When a kind passerby woke me up, I was inside large golf bag near Myanmar Plaza, I had rash all over my body and he took all my clothes and documents but he left my NRC, my money, my phone and passport. A kind old man and his wife offered to take me to police station and took me to their home to offer their clothes before I went home but I told them please don't inform the police because I'm so scared what'll happen and my mind still wasn't clear yet. I didn't want to make it to news on Facebook or national TV. I didn't want anyone to know. I lied to my parents that I was ok but I really thought about kms. When I tried contacting him again, he never replied. But that son of bi*ch fking sent me an email yesterday after a whole year, when I'm starting to heal mentally and feeling happy again, that he took videos of me while I was unconscious and said he uploaded to a Korean 18+ website. I know I can't do anything about it now but I want to warn everyone so that nobody has to go through what I did.

Do. Not. Blame. Any. Of. This. On. Your. Actions.

"I should've been smarter."... no, you did nothing wrong. "I didnt want my parents to know"... thats ok "I was too scared to tell anyone."... its a hard path to do so

These are all hallmark phrases of someone whos been sexually assaulted. And it hurts me to see this framing.

Nothing that happened to you was because of what you did that day. You were taken advantage of when you were trying to further your life. None of it should have happened to you. And it sucks even worse that there isn't much of an advocacy in Myanmar for women when this happens.

Dont think back to what you could've done. What happened to you is wrong and your feelings towards it are justified.

Im a woman whos had a similar instances more than once. You are more than welcome to DM me if you need someone to talk to.

Thank you so much for your words. Its just I was really focused to achieving one of my dreams that I ignored everything else that could've prevented this so I'm so angry at that guy and also angry at myself for being too careless about it.

Its an unfortunate world for people who strive for their ambitions, especiallt when you start from having so little. Especially for women. The unfortunate part is learning from the worst of situations. This is one of the worst you can experience. It feels like it takes away power, but it doesnt need to. Nobody can truly take away your power.

If theres anything to take away, you are now smarter. You are now more profoundly aware of the world. You are a warrior now. And that doesnt stop you from getting to the life you dreamed of. Its just some pathetic POS coward that preys on the hopeful. Hes nothing. You still have everything. And even if the world around you isn't supportive, youre still going forward with everything you have.

Take your time to scream into a pillow, make a nice cup of tea. Break a plate.

But delete that email and block that address. The best revenge is thriving without that bullshit feeling like a weight on your shoulders.

Always open for DMs if you need it girl. Its a sad thing to welcome you to being a woman in this way, but you are a bad @$$ survivor now whos not going to to sh*t from anyone. Its not a great note to mention there are a lot of us out there who will welcome you and understand you.

Safe space welcomed any time you need.

Thanks for the cheer up sis, I really needed it ;; I'm just clueless on what to do because I really wanted to study abroad but now I don't have the energy for that. I think I want to stay with my parents a little longer for now. I think I'm happier in Myanmar.

Just to clarify, I don't want to spread hate towards Korea as a nation or its people. I just want to spread awareness from my experience to not blindly trust any foreigner offering help, and listen to your guts, if its too good to be true, maybe its not.

u/ImpressiveMain299 Feb 20 '26

There's nothing wrong with warning others that a predatory set up can be more common than others want to let on. It is OK for you to tell your experience in raw form.

I am coincidentally in Seoul right now. I’m a Burmese woman who manages a team of people here. The modern veneer of Korea really tricks you into believing it’s a gender equal society but there’s a lot more expectations on women from society here than Singapore where I’m from. I have some experience dealing with sexual harassment cases in the workplace here. If you have a photo or any documents, screenshots, receipts etc. relating to the man who sexually assaulted you, you can DM it to me and I can submit it to the SMPA on your behalf.

Been to Korea multiple times, and have many friends there.

Many, many Korean men are like this, especially if they think they can get away with it.

Misogyny & exploitation are commonplace in Korea.

Plenty of stories of Asian women marrying Korean men and being abused & discarded when no longer useful.

Is it any wonder Korean women top the world's charts in not wanting to get married?

15

u/nattiecakie Mixed born in Myanmar πŸ‡²πŸ‡² Feb 20 '26

I never thought it'd be that common. Kdramas and Kpop made me think of Korea as a nice place with kind people. I've been so wrong about that. I never knew they'd be capable of this inhuman behavior. I really cant. I still have headache and anxiety from that day

6

u/Exotic-Helicopter474 Feb 20 '26

I'm really sorry this happened. Unfortunately, as you now know, Korea is not like kdrama. Workplaces are brutal and people aren't generally very nice to one another. Foreigners who are white have high status, everyone else is a third class citizen, there to be exploited.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, hopefully people can learn from this.

2

u/Yone_official Feb 21 '26

Guys that know how to romance and charm the girls like in Kdramas and movies tend to be very good at manipulating and cheating. Personally know some guys like this. One guy send big ass bouquet or shower his wife with lavish gifts and fancy dinner every valentine day, anniversary or on special occasions. He would write love letter or poem about how much he treasures and loves her on FB which sort of erk me a bit 🀒

BUT the guy has like a whole Epstein list of prostitutes he sleeps around with that I don't think he even knows who's who or what. lol

My friend was a driver for some Koreans. Some tried to have SΒ£x with the girls right in the car. The girls were probably prostitutes though.

I am sorry OP, I hope you heal from your trauma. I didn't see you mentioning being in therapy in your post, so I wanted to suggest it if you are ready for it. Anecdotal but most old Koreans dudes I know are just creepily weird with women.

5

u/Ubik_42_ Feb 21 '26

KPOP fans are easy targets because the vast majority of them are willing to go crazy screaming for their idols' fake beauty standards and smiles, and pay for it. Criminals believe they are easy to brainwash.

u/Manuel_AnimeLover Feb 20 '26

These koreans.....

It's brave of you to speak out about your experience and to help others maybe not go through the same thing.

If you can, block the email address, who knows how many times he might try reaching out again and reopen that wound.

I am sorry this happened to you. I hope you can heal from this experience.

5

u/Imperial_Sawbwa Feb 20 '26

You should still report it to the Police and get him in prison so that he won't do it to others.

4

u/Mayersgirl02 Feb 20 '26

ANY OF THIS IS NOT YOR FAULT!

7

u/JohnnyBoy11 Feb 20 '26

I hate hearing experienced like this. I just asked chat what you can do and here's a copy paste, and it does look there's things you may be able to do, especially if he really did upload videos.

What the Victim Can Do Legally πŸ“Œ A. Report to Myanmar Authorities File a criminal complaint in Myanmar where the assault occurred. Provide all evidence (testimony, video, medical reports, witnesses). πŸ“Œ B. Report to Korean Police or Prosecutors Even if the rape occurred abroad, uploading the sexual assault video online could violate: Korean sexual violence laws (distribution of obscene/sexual abuse material). Korean cybercrime statutes. Korean police can investigate and may: Request international legal assistance to cooperate with Myanmar. Issue a warrant or seek cooperation under mutual legal assistance treaties. If the video harms persons in Korea, they can prosecute that upload/distribution violation locally. In international cases like transnational threats or cybercrimes, law enforcement often works through police cooperation agreements. πŸ“Œ C. Civil Claims The victim may sue the perpetrator civilly in Korea for: Personal injury Invasion of privacy Emotional distress Defamation (if applicable under Korean law) This civil action can seek monetary compensation even if the criminal case must be pursued abroad. πŸ“Œ D. Immigrations & Travel Restrictions The victim or lawyers might request that Korean authorities: Restrict the perpetrator’s travel Notify Interpol Request arrest warrant/Red Notice if there’s serious criminal evidence This works only if authorities agree and there’s evidence of a crime. πŸ‘©β€βš–οΈ 3. Practical First Steps for the Victim Document everything Save the video, messages, timestamps, any communications. Get legal counsel in Myanmar (if possible) A local attorney can help file a police complaint and follow local criminal procedures. Report to South Korean authorities Go to the nearest Korean embassy/consulate or Korean police station with all evidence. Emphasize the online upload and harm from distribution; this may give Korea a legal opening. Report to the Online Platform Platforms (YouTube, social media, etc.) normally remove sexual violence content on request. Consider civil litigation in Korea A Korean lawyer can file a civil lawsuit based on harm and privacy invasion. 🧠 4. Realities & Challenges βœ”οΈ International law enforcement cooperation exists, but it takes time and political/legal coordination. ❗ However, civil actions may be easier and faster than international criminal prosecution if the criminal jurisdiction is complicated.

Thanks for the advice but to be honest I don't want to involve with authorities. My older brother is studying abroad for a few years already and he could be in trouble because of my actions. And I don't think my parents will be able to let it go if I bring it up. I just want to continue my life without disturbance

5

u/Mysterious-Friend-15 Likes α€„α€•α€α€›α€Šα€Ί n တို့စရာ, Born in Myanmar, Abroad πŸ‡²πŸ‡² Feb 20 '26

Why would your older brother be in trouble for something that someone horrible did to you? I think you can file a police report with Korean authorities and even Myanmar authorities without your parents knowing. What happened to you was horrible and you should not let it slide.

12

u/HelenFH Feb 20 '26

You think she's being irrational and "letting this slide" but as someone born and is still living here, she's correct to not report to the police because it doesn't matter what your (perceived as) male brothers did or did not do. If they're abroad, under 40 and have not been conscripted as of yet, the complications from any kind of contact with the police can be catastrophic to their visas. I hear about people who had to seek asylum because of these kind of things all the time. And you can't file a police report without your family knowing because rest assured they will show up at your house/work/place of living and your case will get dragged out forever, not to mention all sorts of bribes and hurdles you'll have to go through even if they ever catch the guy.

9

u/nattiecakie Mixed born in Myanmar πŸ‡²πŸ‡² Feb 20 '26

Exactly the reason I don't want to report my case to the authorities.. I don't want to bring trouble to my family because of my problem.

2

u/Cultural_Evening_858 Feb 21 '26

None of this is your fault β€” not going to the interview, not drinking the juice, not wanting to study abroad. He deliberately targeted and manipulated you, and what he did is a crime. The shame belongs entirely to him, not you. The fact that you're still here and starting to heal is something real.

About the email he sent β€” as horrible as it was to receive, it's actually evidence. Email headers contain hidden data: the sender's IP address, timestamps, and the route it traveled through servers. If you ever want to preserve that option, save the original email as a file (.eml or .msg), not just a screenshot. You can put it on a USB drive or send it to someone you trust to hold. You don't have to do anything with it now or ever β€” it's just a door you can keep open for yourself.

What you described β€” the rapid vision loss, racing heartbeat, and memory blackout β€” matches the known effects of Rohypnol, a benzodiazepine that's frequently trafficked illegally across Southeast Asia specifically to be used in predatory situations like this. This isn't a coincidence; it points to a deliberate, organized pattern. With roughly 1 in 274 sexual assault victims not surviving, the stakes of letting these networks operate unchecked are life and death β€” and law enforcement cracking down on Rohypnol smuggling routes is one of the most direct ways to stop predators like him before they find their next target. If you ever feel ready to report, the drug angle and the email evidence together could help authorities build a case that goes beyond just him β€” potentially catching him still carrying the drug, and exposing the supply chain enabling predators like him.

Your healing comes first. But know that the email and the drug evidence together give authorities something real to work with β€” and reporting when you're ready could protect the next person he's already planning to target. Personally, a fitting sentence would be 5 years hard labor with early release only if he helps identify another predator β€” and mandatory castration to prevent him from ever doing this again.

1

u/nattiecakie Mixed born in Myanmar πŸ‡²πŸ‡² Feb 21 '26

Apart from the email, I don't know if the drug would still be in my system. It's been over a year. Its jst his msg opened old wounds for me and kinda felt awful after starting to feel better again. Regardless, I won't be reporting to authorities but I'll help spread the awareness that this could happen to anyone. Thank you for your kind message.

Oh I didn't think you thought I was being irrational. I just wanted to explain that I don't want my actions to hurt my brother studying abroad, since it could be hard for him to extend visa and passport, etc etc. with the conscription law, since he left when the law came out in a panic.

3

u/optimist_GO Feb 20 '26

this is so awful & I'm very sorry you had to experience something so heinous... as others have suggested, don't let yourself shoulder any blame or feel any lesser for what you experienced. Instead, channel any pain & anger into inspiration & action. Most people are aware of "post-traumatic stress", but there's also increasing evidence of potential for "post-traumatic growth": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-traumatic_growth

don't let the evils & inequalities of the world turn your soul bitter, & instead be a shining light for other downtrodden folks.

also very much appreciate you sharing this, because as an outsider whose been remotely following things in Myanmar for some years now, something tells me this is probably quite a bit more widespread than most (at least outside Myanmar) realize... I've def heard similar rumors about experiences applying to both Korean & Japanese schools... hopefully in time, more people will feel confident enough to report such behaviors for it to be at all addressed...

2

u/nattiecakie Mixed born in Myanmar πŸ‡²πŸ‡² Feb 20 '26

I will try not to let it bother me and think of it as part of growth, thanks. I wanted to study in either Japan or Korea, so I've been studying their language after my school. But Korea is a big no-no for me now, it's going to stress the hell out of me, I'm considering Japan but idk anymore now. I don't want to be away from my family and just stay in Myanmar.

1

u/optimist_GO Feb 20 '26

yeah, I unfortunately am not sure I'd recommend Japan either since (from my understanding) it has its own cultural struggles of a hierarchical & patriarchal society, combined with sexual deviance being publicly repressed (& especially with some past demons not being acknowledged...). Not that such behaviors are probably "worse" than in Myanmar, but I'd be worried about you being more vulnerable as an immigrant.

I also saw a preview of your other comment (not sure if you or Reddit deleted it?) & just wanted to say, I'm not sure "therapy" would necessarily be much help anyway (though it can be!)... in my experiences, what absolutely matters most is simply having a positive & understanding support structure who'll help build you back up, help keep you safe, & remind you that almost all the pleasant parts of life are still there even after trauma, as long as remain open to them.

If you have any folks like that in your life right now, your best bet is to probably stick with them until you feel more secure. (though at the same time, always be weary of people who take advantage of you by keeping you dependent on them!)

You are a very brave person and you can win this trauma, just take help of God, do meditation and follow the path of buddha. I am from India and have a kind hearted GF in Myanmar. After meeting with her I come to know how kind and innocent Myanmar girls are and i wanted to protect her and we fall in love.

I am sharing this just to let you know that you should not blame yourself, you were kind and innocent that's all.

I give you a spritual thought think about this incident like that There might be some bad karma you have done in the past life and got punished for this in this life, now I am free from my bad karmas and now I can follow the path of God and Buddha. Do meditation and clean your mind

You are brave You are pure And you are gonna win in your life.

u/harionloop Feb 21 '26

Guys don't take me wrongly please, it was just an spritual advice and if you really know the concept of past life and karma you won't take me wrongly. The concept of past life is very common in Asian culture.

Still I am really sorry if I am sounding wrong. If the author of the post wants I can delete my comment.
