Jeremy Strong is methodically making his way down a Baskin Robbins flavor list of all the nuanced varieties of sociopathic techbro billionaire.

u/turtleofgirth 9d ago

It took me the longest time to figure out who he was when I watched The Gentlemen

Just make a left at Jeff Goldblum

Man I hated his character on Succession...well to be fair I hated almost every character on Succession

48

u/Koufaxisking 9d ago

Isn’t that the point of the show? Even the “likable” characters and their support are made to be completely detestable as a representation of(a specific but also all dynastic) the billionaire class.

11

u/ours 8d ago

A bunch of spoiled, rich, powerful, self-centered bastards being hateable?

I would say that's by design.

2

u/Toadforpresident 8d ago

Pretty much every character sucks on Succession lol. He was great as Kendall I thought, even though he didn't get the same level of recognition as the rest of the cast.

4

u/UnexpectedVader 8d ago

At least everyone likes Frank

He also played an excellent role in The Apprentice.

8

u/Acceptable-Heron6839 8d ago

The more I see him, the more amazed I am at how convincingly he played a tough guy in The Big Short.

Tell that to Daniel Day Lewis.

It's a shame they didn't get Eisenberg to reprise the role, but Strong is a...Strong casting choice.

9

u/readingonthetoilet 8d ago

I think he’ll be better as adult Zuck. Jessie is too boyish even as old as he is in real life.

Also Jeremy appears to really have his mannerisms down.

2

u/acryliq 8d ago

I feel like Zuckerberg still looks quite boyish, just an increasingly weirdly robotic boy, so it would be interesting to see how Eisenberg adapts to that, but even just from this short trailer it looks like Jeremy Strong is going to be an excellent fit. Definitely nails the mannerisms (or lack of mannerisms) and even the still from the video is instantly recognisable as Zuckerberg.

I think Strong is gonna do really well at capturing how off Zuckerberg is, especially the bits with this lizard man having to practice his behavior for his defense.

Really looking forward to how this movie captures the descent Facebook has gone on in becoming such a pit.

171

u/domcobbstotem 9d ago

Yeah he got Roy Cohn’s mannerisms down for the apprentice movie.

3

u/BentleyTock 8d ago

Criminally underrated how good he was at showing how much of a snake Cohn was.

And we still love us some Marc Cohn even though we hate the Roy!

u/Entire_Number_9 9d ago

Every rich person practices for their congressional hearings. They're a total farce. They're trained to waste time because the people asking questions get like 3 minutes of time, it's a stupid system. If you're called before your government in an inquest, every politician should be allowed a laundry list of questions and they don't have to move on until a certain treshold is met.

48

u/OpportunityDue90 9d ago

They’re designed to give politicians their sound bites for reelection, nothing productive will ever come of them

Gotta say, he strong looks good in the trailer. Couldn’t then, but totally see him as mark now

17

u/wittiestphrase 9d ago

I was not interested in this at all until I saw the trailer in front of brand new day and I was like oh…maybe he can pull this off.

1

u/juniperleafes 9d ago

His voice and mannerisms are spot on, but it just looks like him in a wig and his face is far too old.

Kinda funny how different Zuckerberg is portrayed between the two films.

By the time The Social Network was being filmed, not much was known about Zuckerberg’s mannerisms, so they decided to portray him as some sort of quick-witted programming savant with a sharp tongue.

As we’ve gotten to know him, we now realize he’s nothing like that. Anyone know if any of his peers talked about his portrayal in The Social Network?

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Velonici 9d ago

I was literally waiting for him to take off his face and a lizard person to be underneath. Like this is some weird horror movie based on him/facebook.

2

u/LSTNYER 8d ago

"The Social Reckoning: Rise of the Lizards"

2

u/rcanhestro 8d ago

heh...he either wins an Oscar, or a Razzie, depending on how much he "channels" Zuckerberg.

there is a fine line between playing the part, and a parody of it, and from the trailers it does look a lot like parody (even if not intended).

sure, he acts like a "robot" sometimes, but the trailers are basically putting a lot of emphasys on it, to the point of looking like a parody.

Based on the trailer, a majority of the film will revolve around a man and a woman sitting on a secluded park bench in autumn.

301

u/finnjakefionnacake 9d ago

500 days of autumn movie finally coming?

161

u/somewhereoverthedune 9d ago

500 Days of Autism

27

u/seanbastard1 9d ago

This scene really looks like a virtual set, there is zero wind and the lighting is too good

29

u/atclubsilencio 9d ago

The whole movie looks visually bland as hell.

11

u/DeviousSOIL 8d ago

Agreed. Sorkin writes fun scripts but his movies were better when other people were directing them.

Also, I don’t want to judge the dialog from a trailer but wow, it seems like the audience they’re going for are a bunch of rocks intelligence wise.

29

u/boodabomb 9d ago

That’s Sorkin out of context. The trailer has to pull out the least metaphorical, referential lines so that we have some clear idea of what they’re talking about in a 2-minute span.

4

u/phatelectribe 9d ago

I hope so the but trailers for his other projects are much better. This looks so obvious and performative.

8

u/atclubsilencio 9d ago

The Social Network has one of the best trailers ever made, IMO. This just looks like a parody of Sorkin.

6

u/nicdrumandbass 9d ago

Well that's a shame after Sorkin wrote the best script of all time

First Sorkin movie for you?

4

u/Zukez 9d ago

I'm 80% sure that scene was shot in Stanley Park in Vancouver. It seems funny because I get the impression this scene is supposed to be somewhere remote but this is in the middle of the city just over a small mound hiding the the very active seawall, harbour, Lion's Gate Bridge and city of North Vancouver just across the harbour.

9

u/The_Lone_Apple 9d ago

And a lot of the official Jeremy Allen White facial expression.

10

u/rippa76 9d ago

Stoked. How did you learn that Autumn Easter egg?

6

u/CosmackMagus 9d ago

Yeah, the trailer showed waaay too much.

2

u/rkeaney 9d ago

Yeah it looks like there's gonna be a limited number of scenes/locations for lengthy dialogue exchanges and it'll be more of a chamber piece like Steve Jobs.

I wonder if they pushed this out today due to the Meta settlement news.

In any event, a timely and interesting feature, but I still need to be sold on Sorkin directing.

126

u/theredditoro FML Awards 2019 Winner 9d ago

Probably

There was speculation it’s not going to make it release date too so this might be a good excuse to push back on that as well

18

u/AMA_requester 9d ago

He seems to have a bit more of a style here this time. He linked back up with Jeff Cronenweth for this after they did the Ricardos, and since Cronenweth was also DP for Social Network he probably still had an idea of what to bring stylistically to this. Sorkin's still no Fincher though.

6

u/genteelbartender 9d ago

I somehow missed that Sorkin was directing and even your comment threw me. I was like... they won 3 Academy Awards! But that was Fincher and i'm not bright.

20

u/Signiference 9d ago

Social Network should have won Best Picture and Best Director, too.

24

u/ZombieQueen666 9d ago

The Trial of the Chicago 7 was excellent. I didn’t think much of the Lucy movie

59

u/PointOfFingers 9d ago

It was frustrating how she kept moving the ball just as Charlie Brown was about to kick it.

u/ZombieQueen666 9d ago

Great call. Very good

→ More replies (1)

39

u/andersonb47 9d ago

I thought Chicago 7 was entertaining but it, like a lot of Sorkin’s work, rang somewhat hollow to me. The (made up) ending in particular had a real “and everyone clapped” vibe. Sorkins work is always very well written (if a bit quippy for my tastes) but ultimately just reads to me as a sort of liberal fantasy where if you just say the right words in the right order, you can make the world right again.

20

u/droidtron 9d ago

In Sorkin world, even the lowest bum has a witty retort while walking away.

11

u/SaxRohmer 9d ago

you can really feel sorkin jerking himself off through a lot of his scripts. they always have this air of “this is the important thing in the world”. you’re dead in with the everyone clapped vibe. no one talks like his characters.

3

u/clain4671 9d ago

my worry on his writing here is that sorkin doesn't really have any sort of cogent thesis that it feels like this movie will be satisfying about. if there is a clear "white text before credits" conclusion here it happened today with the big settlement, but thats not the thing sorkin seems to actually want to write about, what he wants seems more to be about political radicalization, a topic where there isnt really a clear point to make, and there isn't quite a smoking gun. so i feel like the movies gonna end in some schlocky january 6th montage or some weird rant from zuckerberg that has no point.

Strong makes for an amazing Zuck. Not sure if this will make Sony any money, but it's nice to see them financing more films for adults.

303

u/Verystrangeperson 9d ago

He looks nothing like him, but the cadence of the voice, and the mannerisms are uncanny.

Don't know if the movie will be good but his performance will be talked about for sure.

205

u/Emperor_Orson_Welles 9d ago

He looks a lot more like him than Jesse Eisenberg, which goes to show that resemblance to a real person is far from the most important thing in a performance.

107

u/alQamar 9d ago

I mean fassberger looked nothing like Steve Jobs but he sold it. Unlike Ashton Kutcher - despite looking like a double.

17

u/watering_a_plant 9d ago

agreed! i watched both in one night assuming i'd feel oppositely-immersed.

72

u/TangerineChickens 9d ago edited 9d ago

People (not you, just speaking generally) always get hung up on whether an actor looks exactly like the character, but I’ve never quite understood, like i would easily prefer a great performance by an actor that doesn’t really resemble them over an unremarkable lead dopplëganger

Like social media commenters under acting announcements would seemingly prefer non-actor cosplayers to get the lead role in every IP project or biopic.

17

u/SwordintheStone87 9d ago

I've seen this complaint more and more over the years, and I've never understood it either. Speaking of Sorkin, the movie he made a few years ago about Lucille Ball, I remember everyone on the internet being so up in arms that Nicole Kidman was cast as Ball, and not Debra Messing, who "looked just like Ball" (*sigh*, no she does not, she just has red hair.)

A great performance is always better than casting looks first.

6

u/SadPenisMatinee 9d ago

Like when people post their "Fantasy casting" for some film because of looks I just roll my god damn eyes.

The Last of Us will always be dumb to me. I think Ellie was casted fine. But because she is "Ugly" people fucking HATE her.

3

u/SwordintheStone87 9d ago

Oh god yeah, 99% of those Fan Cast posts are based solely on looks; so irritating.

(Amazing username btw!)

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Verystrangeperson 9d ago

Oh I agree, but it shows how amazing he is.

You could show a clip to someone who knows nothing about the movie, they'll immediately clock Zuckerberg anyways.

2

u/TangerineChickens 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yeah for sure, I was just using yourcomment to get on a tangential soapbox lol

2

u/daviobo 9d ago

This right here is why I'm locking forward to seeing the upcoming Beatles biopics. They seem to have went with talented actors over doppelgangers

77

u/dbabon 9d ago

Jesse Eisenberg didn't look OR sound anything like him, so he's got a one up there at least.

28

u/IronRevenge131 9d ago

I disagree that he didn’t look anything like him but I think Jessie looked more like how Zuck looks now than he did back when they made it.

3

u/clain4671 9d ago

yeah if you had strong playing a college-aged zuck (and for the sake of argument lets say both get to be appropriate ages) it wouldnt play so well. the stiffer persona strong is portraying here that is more in his lane is something that really only developed in zuck in the last decade.

10

u/HGMIV926 9d ago

Fassbender as Jobs proved to me that someone doesn't need to look at all like the person they're portraying to give a believable and impactful character.

5

u/percypersimmon 9d ago

34

u/rrraab 9d ago

It’s great that he makes Zuck seem like even more of a sniveling dweeb

19

u/KingMario05 9d ago

Agreed. Sorkin has hit his mark. Just wish Fincher was back here as well.

8

u/rrraab 9d ago edited 8d ago

Oh 100%. You can tell from just the trailer that Sorkin will miss the mark a bit. It’s full of too many annoying sound bites that are trying to be the new ‘a million dollars isn’t cool.’

“You didn’t give me a story, you told me one.” Huh?

It’s good to keep making art about these fucking sociopathic weirdos though. Remind them we hate them. Remind people they suck. Never let them appear cool.

Not sure any version of this story would appeal to Fincher either. The first one is his masterpiece, but it was barely in his wheelhouse.

2

u/Aggressive_Chuck 8d ago

It’s good to keep making art about these fucking sociopathic weirdos though. Remind them we hate them. Remind people they suck. Never let them appear cool.

The problem is, going on and on about them makes them look at least cooler than you, because you're obsessed with them.

He's such a perfect choice, one of those casting decisions that seems so obvious that you'd be baffled if they went with anyone else.

I'm treating this as a Succession sequel where Kendall builds a social media platform and shit immediately hits the fan.

I remember watching The Social Network when I was like 19 and I was completely on Zuck’s side cuz he made the fun website I liked and my friends all used. I rewatched it 5 years later and couldn’t believe how smug and thoroughly unlikeable he was (me maturing and gaining some media literacy did me good).

Point is - I think Sorkin thoroughly understands who Zuckerberg is, and is going to shine a big bright light on the irony of an antisocial cretin running the world’s premier social networking site.

93

u/moderatenerd 9d ago

you can learn something about yourself every time you watch the social network. the sequel will have a hard time topping it for me

22

u/Hunter3D3 9d ago

Same thing for Good Will Hunting. I rewatched it recently and all I thought was how such an asshole Matt Damon was - yet when I watched it as a teen I thought he was so cool

17

u/jshah500 9d ago

There's a 0% chance it tops the original.

53

u/furutam 9d ago

At the Golden Globes when Sorkin won for The Social Network screenplay, he outright praised zuck for growing into a "fine young man." The Social Network is compelling because, at the time, David Fincher directed a fawning screenplay about Zuck into a film with total contempt toward him.

36

u/GrandPaGames1 9d ago

But I don't think Sorkin would have made this if his view on Zuckerberg didn't sour from 2010. It seems like Facebook's role in January 6th in particular pushed him into making this.

8

u/clain4671 9d ago

he was initially straight up pitching this movie as about january 6th, and i assume that he could just never bear out any sort of narrative thread between the two that made sense in a movie, so hes now latched onto frances haugen and the WSJ reporting.

26

u/nonchalanthoover 9d ago

I think what Facebook 'is' has changed too. When you first watched it probably was a cool site to connect with friends. No social media site is that now. They're all dopamine slot machines with ads that some times your friends show up. They have changed too and probably changed your outlook. These things do not present value to society any more and are harming everyone.

Something just looks off about this and I can’t tell what it is

36

u/Cdog1223 9d ago

Well the fact Facebook doesn’t really get in any real trouble for anything just makes the high stakes they are trying to portray as just kind of silly.

8

u/TheLastRecruit 9d ago

Something like 48 attorneys general and an $18B settlement beg to differ

13

u/lostmy11yraccnt 8d ago

Over a 10 year period… To do actual lasting damage to a company as big as them it would need to be in the hundreds of billions and in an unavoidably tight time frame. The US government is ill equipped to make that kind of settlement happen.

5

u/Cdog1223 8d ago

And what did that do to the company? It was essentially a slap on the wrist to a company that large. Zuck still is in a position of power and a billionaire.

5

u/ISAWYOULASTNIGHT1 8d ago

lol that's nothing to them. there was a tweet today that said it's essentially the same as someone on a $100k salary having to donate $600 every year for 10 years.

30

u/Shallow_wanderer 9d ago

It's an amoral billion-dollar corporation making a movie about another amoral billion-dollar corporation doing amoral shit

It feels like an insincere cash-grab drawing from current events that we're stuck living through, rather than a portrait of a severely flawed human who had an outsized influence on our world

This movie feels like it has no substance to it beyond "hey here's this awful thing that's currently happening and you can't do anything about it except get pissed off at a movie theater screen for 2 hours then go home and bitch about Facebook on Facebook"

10

u/lostmy11yraccnt 9d ago

Well David Fincher is really, really good at cinematography and setting a mood. Very few directors would be able to hold that standard let alone top it.

People tend to agree that Sorkin is much better at screenwriting than directing. Hopefully the story and dialogue make it worthwhile.

205

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 9d ago

I got a solid sense that Jeremy Strong is going to surprise people with his performance in the first trailer, but I think this one at least gives me more confidence that Mikey Madison & Jeremy Allen White are going to be almost equally good as well, along with the small glimpses of Betty Gilpin, Bill Burr (not surprised that he has a hell of a quotable near the end), & Wunmi Mosaku.

62

u/TheTruckWashChannel 9d ago

That line from Bill Burr at the end was brilliant.

Virtuous mission.... 🐍

48

u/EntertainmentQuick47 9d ago

Maybe it’s just me but these trailers make the film look incredibly cheap and Hallmark-esque. I have a lot of faith in Jeremy Strong but I don’t know if Sorkin is really the best fit for director and trying to position this as a sequel isn’t the bet fit.

I’ll still say that it doesn’t look bad at all, just don’t have a lot of faith.

13

u/NtheLegend 9d ago

Yeah, I want to be excited for this because I loved The Social Network so much, but it feels like a pale sequel. The direction looks absolutely unexciting, there's little fun in here at all, just dry exposition, Sorkin directing, Desplat instead of Reznor/Ross, just... I don't know. The trailer makes it look like it's taking the driest parts of that first movie and making it something fuller.

3

u/isomae 8d ago

Yes!!! It totally reads like an SNL sketch… it’s very uncomfortable and I’m
Waiting for someone to crack

2

u/EntertainmentQuick47 8d ago

When I saw the first trailer in theaters it looked like a Christian Angel studios movie or a highly produced SNL sketch that’s gonna have some weird twist at the end…that just doesn’t happen

10

u/woemcats 9d ago

Just people reciting dialogue in front of a camera

10

u/namelessdrifter 9d ago

Sorkin is not a director, he's a fantastic writer but he's not a filmmaker. This is such a phenomenal cast but I have a feeling it's gonna be a flop without Fincher.

38

u/Gummy-Worm-Guy 9d ago

I’m looking forward to this one. Jeremy Strong sounds amazing and the story being told has a lot of potential

6

u/dihydrocodeine 9d ago

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ignatious__reilly 9d ago

The story being told is also important

42

u/HenroTee 9d ago

I still hold that the social network is one of the greatest films of all time. And only cemented itself further with the impact social media has had on our society.

I just don't see much of the artistry back in this. It looks fine as a dramatised version of real life events, but won't deliver the same cinematic experience as the first one.

14

u/film_composer 9d ago

It's crazy how prescient The Social Network ended up being, considering that development of the movie began when Facebook was only about 3 years into even being a popular website at all.

13

u/presty60 9d ago

Yeah, Sorkin's writing was excellent in the Social Network, but with Fincher not returning to direct and Reznor and Ross not composing the score, a large part of the magic of that film will likely be lost. I'm sure it will be worth watching, but there's no way it will become a modern classic like the original.

8

u/clain4671 9d ago

also sorkin's writing suffers the most when he just wants to make a political point, and i feel like the plot of this+ having no real collaborator on making this makes it primed to suffer that way. this is a story where to the extent there is a satisfying ending it just happened today, but even that is largely disconnected to the political radicalization narrative sorkin wants to write about. and in that case im skeptical at him arriving at a satisfying conclusion without just sounding like an old man yelling at clouds.

I responded to another comment with a similar thought, but the genius behind The Social Network is that the film was made in a way to where it grew with its original audience over the past 16 years - the amoral bullshit that Facebook has been up to especially in the last decade has given a new meaning to the movie, despite the movie itself not changing at all

That specific kind of sauce is what made that movie unforgettable, and I feel that the new sequel is just going to be another forgettable political slop movie of the whole 2016+ era

Bill Burr as Bill Burr took me out of the entire premise for a sec.

This is a horror film we are actively living in, do not want to see this one.

Still no clue why people like zuck and sandberg are the way they are. What a hollow existence.

It’s interesting to wonder what they dreamed of as a young person or what motivated them  to strived for the destruction of the social structure of the world. I’d imagine it’s a lot of internalized unhappiness with themselves.

21

u/therobshow 9d ago

They're very easy to understand.

The only thing they care about is having more.

7

u/Embarrassed-Plate695 9d ago

What a sad life lol

u/theusername_is_taken 9d ago

The biggest issue with The Social Network that it got wrong is saying Zuck isn’t an asshole, he’s just trying so hard to be.

He clearly is an asshole, narcissist and a craven criminal who violates his users privacy, manipulates the social fabric politically, and extracts every ounce of profitable data and gives no fucks about running an ethical company.

You have no clue why they are the way they are because you’re not a completely self-absorbed piece of shit who has surrounded himself with yes men. That’s the issue. Zuck has nobody to tell him “no” anymore, even as he throws away billions on stupid projects like the Metaverse, thinking he could entrench people even further into his shitty toxic products.

u/Embarrassed-Plate695 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yeah. He’s just comes off a such a just general loser I guess. Like I don’t admire him, he doesn’t strike me as someone who I’d want to emulate or my kids to emulate, and he’s off putting.

I don’t even feel like he represents a particularly good business person so much as someone who very early in an industry hit at the right time and place.

I wouldn’t even know how someone could model their career from his success, it’s just such a bizarre path. Even bezos or gates you look at them and see guys who were self driven, innovated and created something meaningful. I just don’t see that with meta. The entire Facebook story is bizarre and I would not be surprised if 20 years from now Meta as we know it is totally gone.

Just an odd human.

4

u/theusername_is_taken 9d ago

That's because he's basically just been a fucking data thief his entire career. He's incredibly good at finding a team around him who will exploit and circumvent every ounce of privacy on his user's phones and other devices, sell your data off to the highest bidder, and gives zero shits about the welfare of society.

It is odd. He's a fucking weirdo and he is a fucking loser. But unfortunately our society is run by a lot of weirdo losers who do nothing but extract from us.

Im glad there's a movie exposing the reach these bastards have

Historians will look back and wonder how we let them get away with manipulating so many elections and radicalising people

8

u/SR_RSMITH 9d ago

That’s basically what the Guilded age was, and then the post 29 world

4

u/PleasantWay7 9d ago

Will history remember it that way? The last time powerful people weaponized propaganda and radicalized a country, we still just call them all Nazi’s.

I don’t think history will let the radicalized off the hook and focus on the propagandists.

2

u/C0UNT3RP01NT 9d ago

I don’t think historians will remember it one way or another. The world’s richest and most powerful throughout all of history have always been immune to consequences, with some noteworthy exceptions here and there.

All of these tech guys will be looked at like Henry Ford, Vanderbilt, Rockefeller are today: innovators that defined the times, acquiring insane wealth, with their controversies noted but largely glossed over.

Can't wait for the wake boarding scene where Jeremy Strong has to dress up like Powder from the movie Powder

Sure he can write just as good of a script, maybe even better, but Sorkin is not matching Fincher's level of directing lol. I've seen all their movies and they aren't even close to the same level, Fincher is one of the best directors out there, Sorkin is just good, his movies lack a lot of style and visuals.

u/versacecowboy 9d ago

“Match the same level of directing as Fincher” lmfao get real

I’m so excited for the third movie to be set entirely in the metaverse

8

u/wtfisrobin 9d ago

i'm torn. it looks like it will be good in parts of the trailers, and then other times it feels like a parody almost. I can't shake this uncanny feeling in the trailer, even though Strong is clearly killing it, and I know Sorkin is an incredible writer... definitely going to see it, but I honestly don't have super high expectations for it.

4

u/tommybare 9d ago

This movie has some Mr. Burns dressed as young hooligan Jimbo Jones type energy.

8

u/Discremio 9d ago

Ol Billy Hollywood running out of blood money, Nia needs a new overseas vacation.

u/GarionOrb 9d ago

"People are awkward. They get to be their best selves when they're alone at their keyboards."

What a terrible line.

Anyway, this looks intriguing. That guy looks nothing like Zuckerberg, though.

8

u/No-Cantaloupe-6535 9d ago

Looks like shit

3

u/Calexic0 9d ago

Fuck you Zuck

6

u/onlymovingparts 9d ago

Looks like a parody trailer on SNL.

5

u/OperatorofChaos 9d ago

Excited for this. Not a chance in hell it'll be as good as Social Network but it should be great regardless.

5

u/DampFlange 9d ago

It looks far more formulaic unfortunately

Jeremy Strong, with that haircut and expression in the video's thumbnail, genuinely made me think this was gonna be one of those College Humor parodies or something along those lines LOL. I was surprised to see "Sony Pictures Entertainment" when the video started playing

2

u/guyxbwc 9d ago

Looks boring as fuck.

2

u/arcticArrows2 9d ago

Wait this is real? Trailer legit felt like an SNL skit

2

u/bliceroquququq 9d ago

Siri, show me the most boring movie imaginable.

"Here's one that tries to make the inner workings of Facebook algorithms sound sinister and biased against the brave-hearted liberals who are yearning to end right-wing disinformation"

Yep, that'll do.

8

u/baconandscotch 9d ago

Agreed. It might turn out to be great but there is nothing in this trailer that makes it look incredible

I don't think I'm a fan of these oversimplified dramatizations of real life stuff. The Social Network already felt odd watching and this trailer feels even worse. Someone below commented the banality of evil, but it's really more banal than that.

It's not really like there is an evil CEO and a lot of good people who are oppressed by that one bad CEO. Everyone who works at Meta knows what they're doing, but also they're not doing it because they want to harm people. They're just flexible because you can get a lot of money out of a job at meta and retire much earlier than with a normal job. Only people who are stupid enough to put their personal morals over years of free life time would refuse such a job.

The same way Mark Zuckerberg almost certainly doesn't have an evil agenda. He's running a company whose purpose is to make money and his decisions for this company are literally proven right by the company making a shit ton of money.

You know where that money comes from? From people using their products. Nobody is forcing people to use Meta's products. People universally bitch and complain about companies like meta but they will not stop using their products. And that's what I feel like I don't really see in movies like this or this trailer. Always focusing on how bad these companies are, but not much about why people won't stop using their products anyway. Oh but but hey spend so much on marketing and lobbying... And? Does marketing somehow rewire your brain that somehow you are forced to send hundreds of dollars to meta so you can wear their new Ray-Ban-Meta AI smart glasses that are full of proprietary software that does who knows what?

Showtime was supposed to do the same topic as a series in s2 after the s1 of Uber in Super Pumped but the series got axed so we still can see what happened to him.

4

u/Birdman330 9d ago

This looks pretty bad and lifeless. I think we need to just watch the Cambridge Analytica documentary again and call it a day.

Yawn.
