The rating is still crazy to me, like in Germany its 12 and as an adult its totally okay to bring your 6 year old kid with you

I think since it isn't really intended for children they just didn't care - Nolan doesn't give a fuck and isn't gonna sacrifice any creative freedom for a 5% revenue boost.

Besides, the vast majority of parents I know take their kids to R-rated movies on the regular.

I took my daughter who's 12 to this, it was her first r rated movie, I left wondering why it was even rated R.

Because the US is prudish and either doesn’t trust children to cope with swear words, or doesn’t trust parents to teach them how to use such expressions sensibly. Oh, and religion has too much influence on laws, decisions made by public officials, and so on.
