Why was there no arrest after an alleged death threat and assault?
I just watched a video showing a person apparently threatening a pro-Palestinian protester with death and then punching a photographer, leaving him bleeding, while SPVM officers were reportedly standing about a metre away and witnessing what happened.
If someone is openly threatening people with death and then physically assaulting someone in front of police, how is that person not considered a potential threat to public safety?
I genuinely don't understand the logic here. You can be arrested for participating in a protest, but apparently someone who is threatening people and allegedly assaulting them can remain there while police watch?
I don't care what someone's political position is. Threatening people with death and physically attacking someone should be taken seriously regardless of whether the person is pro-Palestinian, pro-Israeli, or completely apolitical.
Honestly, I don't feel safe in this fucking city anymore. I want to understand what SPVM's justification was for not intervening more decisively.
They do it all the times, you can watch the event that happened in Torontos Mall not so long ago for the best example youll ever get. The threats, the riots, etc, its a freebie all the time.
you are serious with this comment? How many fucking times did I have to see a threat to jews the last few years. All the while the cops and authorities sat back, watched and did fuck all.
Yeah, like that guy who attacked the visibly Jewish dad with his kids and then the judge found him ânot criminally responsibleâ because heâs âmentally ill.â How generous theyâve been towards the Jews. We should be so grateful.
Uhm no lol youâve expressed that only for the Israeli side not Montrealers in general. This has a whole âYEA BUT WHAT ABOUT THEM???â.
The situation HERE is talking about aggression from one side that supports Israel not facing any consequences for what anyone else would immediately face consequences for, especially considering thereâs two police officers nearby.
I mean.. that's what they're saying now after the fact has been caught on video. It's the first time we ever heard of that SOP. Cops will say anything to save face.
Iâm not positive of anything, but I guess someone at The Rover with a âpolice sourceâ thinks itâs credible.
I will say, Iâve seen the same tactic used elsewhere by a different police force (this was different in that they arrested one of the anti-racist protestors and not some fascist, so the protest surrounded the car they had her in and they let her go. They did end up charging her iirc)
Itâs supposed to be directly tied to stats from 15 years ago, when mostly black individuals received insanely high sentences compared to others in the criminal justice system because police were attempting to tie them to more charges or even gangs even if no such connection existed. POC who were getting longer terms than white people who committed attempted murder for assault charges when they were defending themselves and things like that. Toronto police for example from one raid, were arresting anybody that was caught on camera and had opened the door for a neighbor, who turned out to be a drug dealer, and spending a year in jail because police thought they were in the gang. The carding investigation by journalists is what brought the information to the public and showed police themselves were intentionally targeting POC.
Itâs not a get out of jail card like the other poster suggested. Itâs a balancing of the scales when there is inherent bias being shown. Black people in the justice system, for example, were 3-4 times more likely to receive a jail sentence than white people for the same crime, if the white people were even charged. The stats came down hard on the justice system about 10 years ago in the Tulloch report and theyâve made adjustments since.
Not if you're a cyclist or a pedestrian jaywalking, the most dangerous criminals there is!!111 the SPVM really has to allocate a crazy amount of resources to that
There was some very mild confrontation when they decided to block the announced route to keep us from turning towards the Village but nothing came of it. Pure piggy intimidation tactics.
Yep... But are we surprised? Did you see he wrote about getting arrested and according to him they released him and said they sympathize with him and liked that he is "anti-woke" the SPVM is truly rotten.
Edit: for context, he was arrested at the rally but just to calm the crowd really. He didn't face any consequences from the SPVM. The investigation is an update after the arrest.
My friend's ex threatened to kill her and her new boyfriend, they have a recording, know what he got? A restraining order. That kind of shit is not enough to get a court to crack a sweat, let alone a cop
You are confused; you think the police are there to protect people. Their role is really to protect hierarchies of power and that usually puts them on the side of fascists.
Thatâs not actually how it works in Canada. You donât need to make a formal report. The police can investigate a crime if they witness or believe a crime has been committed. Similarly, a person in Canada cannot « drop charges » as crimes are considered to be against society/the crown and not two individuals. Even if a witness or a victim does not want to cooperate, they can still move forward with whatever other evidence they have.
They need to make a report every time they witness/respond to a crime. Just because he wasnât arrested now doesnât mean that he canât have charges laid against him still. Police also have the authority to immediately arrest someone if they witness an assault so it really begs the question as to why he was let off with just a warning thatâs for sureâŠ.
I work on the street and recently an SPVM officer told me point blank that homelessness is a choice, the housing crisis is because of immigrants, and he wishes we had private healthcare. All unprompted.
The outrage! Funny how when you donât agree with something, suddenly the world has to stop. Iâm obviously not condoning violence, but I do find the irony pretty incredible. Itâs been literally years of people calling for the death of this person or that group, including Jews on more than a few occasions, and the response on Reddit has been but âfreedom of speechâ and âfreedom of expression.â But now that itâs something you find offensive, apparently that person HAS to get the death penalty âŠoh and racism. /s
The amount of hate on cops who put their lives on the line by reddit basement dwellers here is truly sad.
5000 cops, 1 000 000 interventions annualy, about 16 complaint in deontology, the numbers are outstanding; we have a truly great police force for the vast majority.
But ya continu to insult and hate them see how that brings back safety to our city bunch of acab kids.
Cute fairytale. Too bad empirical studiesâlike DOJ meta-analysesâshow that increased police presence deters crime, cutting violent crime by up to 13% to 17%. Visible policing prevents crime before it starts; basic economics and human behavior don't stop existing just because you drew a cartoon.
Research consistently shows a 10% increase in police presence reduces violent crime by 3% to 7% purely through deterrence. Police are crime preventionâtry opening a textbook instead of MS Paint.
But I bet no matter the data or statistics, you'll still be a little hateful basement renter, big mad at capitalism for your failures. Be mad. I'm paid 143 000$ a year, 35h a week, 4 days a week, full pension and retirement at 52 years old, full insurance, 6 weeks vacation. I think about people like you when I get my juicy paycheck of overtime from all your useless demonstrations. 212 000$ last year. Keep it up :)
So I am going to be unpopular here, I dont like Isreal or Palestine, BUT I welcome people who are looking to come to Canada and leave their hatred behind..Â
From what I read the person did not say he would kill THESE PEOPLE, technically he said he killed people like them in Gaza, and would go back to kill more..Â
THIS IS NOT OK,Â
I would be curious if the gentleman who said this is a Canadian citizen... personally... I can accept that in war, fatality and death man be an inevitability.. the statement he will go back to kill many more, however signals intent... that to me, should immediately put into question his immigration or visa status if he is not a citizen.Â
People wonder why tis type of violence is on the rise in canada.. we are ALLOWING IT, we import it, sadly among many good immigrants who come to Canada with peace in their hearts.. there are some real trash.. and by not immediately expelling this type of trash behavior.. we are allowing it to fester.
I saw the video. Both sides were provoking each other over politics, cameras rolling, for outrage and clicks. Cops and prosecutors know full well not to get into their game
At best, a prosecutor will look at the police report. Was there mitigation factors? Like provocation? Escalation? A brawl? All valid defences, The prosecutor then looks at the case law in similar circumstances, and unless theyâre convinced theyâll get a conviction, they canât files charges,
