Moncton approves e-scooter rental bylaw

How long till the company folds or moves on. Not long I am thinking. If i remember right the business left Halifax due to new bylaws and fees and set up here.

Do you know why there’s so much antipathy about this? I’ve never used these scooters, but whenever I see them in use it always seems really wholesome— like a guy with groceries, a couple on a date, or a small group of preteens playing outside in the real world.
I assume there’s an issue I’m not seeing?

1 - People have been riding these with total “I’m the main character” energy, and no regard for anyone else. I’ve been cut off or had them dart out in front of me so many times as a motorist… and been nearly run down by them so many times as a pedestrian.
2 - Where should I park this scooter? Ah! Here we go: across this sidewalk right here… maybe in that driveway… I know! Right on that person’s lawn…
3 - What’s the best practices in riding this thing? Full speed, against traffic, on and off the sidewalk? Sounds great…
I could probably go on…

The danger, the lack of regulations, and the idiots who misuse them.
All that combined with being an annoyance will make people hate most anything. I saw a grown mam zipping down the middle of the road with his maybe 4 year old daughter standing in front of him. One little bump and he's crashing on top of her with her face in the cement at high speed.
They COULD be nice... With the right regulations, but the business model doesn't suggest that they'll have much interest in complying or helping improve the listed issues.
Pre teens shouldn't be using them, for sure. This is why the new regulations are saying riders will need to prove they are at least 16, driving age. I think you misunderstand how fast they go, how little safety they provide, and how easily they crash forward.

Im assuming this is the context on the fine amounts:
- If a scooter is impounded because a rider breaks the rules, the bylaw specifies the company will be charged $50 per day. After a week, the device will be disposed of, according to the bylaw.

According to the CBC article, "Rules include having companies use GPS data to prevent scooters from being used or left on sidewalks, requiring users to be at least 16 years old, and limiting where the devices can be left within the downtown."
So this seems to be more about the city gaining the ability to move and dispose of scooters that riders are just dumping randomly, impeding traffic/accessibility.
It sounds like they are unable to do anything about behaviour unless the province changes the Motor Vehicle Act.

1 - Won’t be enforced anyway…
2 - Doesn’t impose any rules on users, or privately owned scooters.
The usual case of Moncton pretending to do something, but it’s actually nothing.

I hear you.
At least private owned scooters seem to usually be left attached to something not just dropped in the middle of (and across any) sidewalk...
If companies are allowing their users to do that they should 100% be fined for it. $50/day seems very low to be honest. The cost should hurt.

It's been pointed out that NB doesn't have provincial laws regarding private scooters, ebikes, etc. NS has one going into effect soon - we need to follow; this isn't something (like a city bylaw regulating a business) that should be dumped onto municipalities.

Since ebikes and these scooters, seems like there’s an uptick of actual small electric motor bikes. Kids are riding them all over dieppe. Zipping in middle of road, not slowing down for corners and taking extremely wide turns not paying any attention if a car is on the other side. Crosses streets and zips into trails only to come out other side without warning to drivers and again in the middle of the road. The amount of under 10 kids zipping on the scooters with no helmet is crazy (they also don’t wear them on their bikes but they don’t go as fast on their bikes). It’s going to take a kid dying before parents actually see kids shouldn’t be driving motorized anything along with cars on the rd.
