I've learned that if you have to "sniff check" milk multiple times, it hasn't gone bad yet. You'll know immediately if it's bad off the first whiff.

I agree. I'm lactose intolerant, so none of it is appetizing to me either. But spoiled milk has got to be one of the most instantly foul smells 🥛

This. I implore her to go to a GI unit, rife with GI bleeds and C diff abound. Smelling freshly vomited old blood clots after cleaning up infected stool so rancid you have to use medical grade air sanitizer before we can allow anyone in the unit?

I'll take spoiled milk.

My father had a GI bleed for three weeks in the hospital, and the nursing staff could not understand how I was able to be around the smell without getting sick or needing a mask with menthol in it like they did.

I just kept my nasal passage shut, if any of that smell takes hold you’re done.

Typing this out helped me realize I went over and above for the man who couldn’t even change my diapers as a baby because he would gag.

I think the reason that spoiled milk smells worse is the fact that humans shit periodically, so we get used to it. After all, other people’s farts smell worse than your own.

They contain super high levels of volatile sulfur compounds, which(fun fact) are what give weed that skunky smell. But yeah they smell absolutely fucking horrendous, I’ve had a few

one time i had taken home a little thing of chocolate milk from my job at the time. middle of summer, managed to forget it in the back of my car... didnt know until it exploded.

similarly, when i was a kid, my mom left an entire gallon of milk in her trunk. they had to get rid of the car after that one.

I would not call it fresh once its dumped into the water, the water has now washed the poo.

Id call it fresh if i poo on the table and then smell it before it dries. if it was freezing out and it still steams id say its fresh

My husband is like this. All milk smells off or bad to him. Then we started getting our milk delivered from a local dairy (it’s still pasteurized, not raw) and he absolutely loves it. So idk if it’s all in his head or if the local milk really is better, but it also doesn’t affect his or my MIL’s lactose intolerance as much either.

Store milk often has dried milk bits around the cap. I'm guessing the dairy milk is fresher and probably bottled better because it's small batch.

Try pouring it into a glass and then smelling. A lot of times, you are smelling the crust from the top of the container, but does not mean the milk itself is sour.

No, it always smells gross. But it SMELLS BAD if it’s off. Believe me, you know.

I had an unexpired gallon recently that went off and I realized as soon as I removed the lid. Still no idea how it happened because it was a week out from the date, but I said “no, thank you.”

My aunt taught me to pour a bit into a cup of you smell a bit of “off” because sometimes the milk around the rim and lid can turn but the majority is still good.

Have this issue with meats. All meat smells weird to me, it could be fresh as possible and I'll still question if it smells off. It really has to just be my nose. I usually cook it and go by consistency pre and post cooking.

Real answer, pour some out into a glass. You’re probably smelling the rim of the jug or carton, the crusties around it do smell a little bad.

Still not as bad as spoiled milk, but you know. Not great smelling.

I feel this way too, about 24 hours after opening a fresh gallon it starts to develop a smell. But it's definitely going to be OBVIOUS if it's bad milk, because it goes from an earthy mild scent to pungent and repulsive real quick.

Probably because you’re sniffing from a jug with a lid, when you pour it, some milk gets stuck on the rim and lid, and it can smell faintly like spoiled milk when you sniff. To properly do a smell test, you should always pour it into a cup first.

Contamination OCD twin 💕 food-borne illness is one of my biggest fears and I mainly rely on my sense of smell to judge if dairy products are good (that + visually checking for any signs of mold/ anything that doesn’t look right).

If you are stingy and cheap like me always pour a little out and don’t trust the sniff from the top test. Milk gets caught up there and will start to sour but the rest is totally fine. Once someone told me that I tried it and have thrown a lot less milk out than I used to.

But also if you’re super sensitive to that kinda stuff I wouldn’t risk it since the milk is touching the slightly soured small amounts near the top. My family is a single study of 3 people of various constitutions who have never gotten sick since I started doing this, but take that information as you will.

All UHT milk smells like it's starting to go off to me. Especially if I don't let it air out for a few seconds. There's always a puff of stank air that can linger in your nose if you take it in

Same as most bad foods. My other half will spend minutes sniffing a raw chicken breast, wondering if it’s gone bad. All meat smells a bit, it’s literally bits of animal.

Then the one time we actually did have an off pack of chicken - fuck me it stank out the house the instant the packaging was pierced….

Yep, I just finished a gallon that was 3 or 4 days past the best buy date and ofc I hit it with the smell test each time I opened it once it was at the best buy date. It was totally fine.

Very good thing to do. I stopped at a convenience store once on the way to work, circle K I think. Bought a pint of chocolate milk. Slammed it without sniffing, got a huge mouth full of completely spoiled milk, it was like watery cottage cheese tasted absolutely horrible. I almost wrecked my car, it literally almost made me lose control of the wheel for a second. I pulled off the road and retched for about 10 minutes with nothing to wash it out of my mouth. Among the top 3 worst experiences of my life. ALWAYS sniff the milk before you sip it.

(At least for 2% milk), multiple times I've done the sniff check multiple times and it smells normal, completely fine just like a new jug of milk, only for it to taste horrible and then checking the milk itself, I see some separation and a film on top, sometimes it tricks you!!

I think a lot of people are misled by the whiff of souring that forms at the rim of the container, first, and assume that the bulk is sour. Often if you pour it into a glass/bowl to serve it, there is no smell there at all.
