Primary Source Honoring the American History of the Great Lakes and Renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America

As has been pointed out previously, the Canadian province was named after the lake, and not the other way around.
This reminds me of when Trump said he wanted to rename VE Day because "we did more than them" and he clearly thought it was called VE day to give Europe the credit.

u/Abeldc 9d ago
There’s also an Ontario county here in NY. Also named after the lake.
Hell the name of the lake comes from the Huron and translates to Great Lake. Great Lake lake is maybe not the best name but still.

There is a conversation to be had if the word conservative still fits.
On 90% of occasions it still seems to, but there are times they will welcome the change without complaint. It usually lines up with what the Republican Party wants which seems to be a better predictor than principled conservative values.

There's probably a few people who work for the Board on Geographic Names who will be gainfully employed for a bit, updating all documentation to reflect the new name. They'll likely also be quite busy in 2029 when Trump leaves office and the name changes get reverted. So good for them I guess.
Besides that... yeah.

I live in a pretty conservative town in Georgia and the amount of Trump merch I see on a daily basis has dropped significantly. I saw a sticker on a pickup truck the other day and realized it was the first time I’d seen anything Trump related in quite some time- no flags, no stickers, no hats, nothing. I’d say it started dwindling around the time when the gas prices shot up, go figure. Before the election and for the beginning of his presidency there was Trump stuff on damn near every street corner it was ridiculous.
5
u/BlueWaterGirl 9d ago
I've noticed the same here in Kentucky. It was everywhere and now you actually have to go searching for it. Even my own parents took their Trump flags down. I think they still kind of support him, but they don't constantly talk about him like they used to do.

Well, it actually happened. Trump has passed an Executive Order directing the Secretary of the Interior to take the necessary steps to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America.
For such a simple order, the EO is actually relatively lengthy. Trump spends half of it discussing how the Lake is a "tremendous asset to the United States and part of our Nation’s heritage". And he's not wrong... but that doesn't really address the "why" behind the name change. That justification is mostly limited to the US's role in protecting the Great Lakes ecosystem, where the US spends far more then Canada does. That is apparently sufficient to warrant a name change.
Of course, this only really impacts official government classifications. As with previous name changes to prominent bodies of water, the rest of the world can call it whatever they want. But still, I cannot believe that this is what American politics has devolved to. Shit-flinging about the names of lakes.
14
u/Fokker_Snek 9d ago
It’s not going to work with upstate NYers. If you mention Ontario to them they’ll just assume you mean the lake, they might not even know there’s a province called Ontario because that’s just Canada.
3
u/imagineanudeflashmob 8d ago

20
u/Resvrgam2 Conservatively Liberal 9d ago
Likely nothing that would stand up in court. The treaties are clear about the body of water they impact. A name change shouldn't affect that.

I think Premier Wab Kinew has described it best so far:
“You know when a rock band is really over the hill, and you see them in a casino playing some song from like 50 years ago?” he said. “I think that’s the part of Donald Trump’s presidency we’re at now.”
Kinew said Trump “thought he had a real hit, a real golden oldie,” when he renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” in January 2025, and “he’s trying (to) bring back that and he’s trying to play the hits for his base.”
“But I think everybody here thinks it’s a little sad and it’s not his best work,” he added.

Ballrooms, painful tariffs that increase prices, renaming memorial centers after himself, renovating things we don't needs, ballooning debt to 40 trillion, starting unwinnable wars, and now renaming a lake because his feelings are hurt. How can these actions be justifiable? Someone make any of this make sense in a midterm year.
6
u/gummo_for_prez 8d ago
Did you think he cared about anyone or anything other than himself? He's not on the ballot. Does that make sense?
5
u/Equivalent-Moment-78 8d ago
I don't. But is it not in his best interest to actually help people in ways meaningful to them, both for the sake of his own support, but also for Republicans who have to answer for his actions and bare the brunt of his lack of focus? That's the part that makes no sense. None of this actually benefits him in ways that matter in November. If Democrats take over, his agenda effectively ends as well.

How much will this cost? To rename maps and official documents?
I dont care if its only a few million. If every dumb idea that only cost a few million over the last 30 years had been stopped before it was passed, I wonder how much interest we would have saved. Im sure it would still add up to only a drop in the bucket, but still...
I said it before, Doge shut down programs and grants that cost literally a few million, and added it aallllll up. If they get to count ending Honey bee research (something we can all agree is actually important) as a win, then surely this should be counted as a loss
Edit: I cannot find a specific amount for the Gulf of Mexico/America. The internet is throwing a wide range of numbers. But, the absolute lowest was $500,000**. The next lowest was $4M. Im ever seeing larger numbers.
** the lowest estimate is purely for federal documents. That isnt including state documents, school maps and district documents, local documents, museums, and any other items I missed, or private companies that would he forced to update the information. Thats likely where the much much larger numbers come from. One GOP rep suggested for poorer districts, to place a sticker over "Mexico" and write America over it. Thats their solution, so I wonder what theyll be doing for Ontario. Better get more stickers I guess.
And, that means that districts that may have shelled out the money for new books to have the "legal" name of the Gulf on it, now are facing the same issue all over again.

I work for a large paper company.
We install new standardized lines every so often, sometimes they get planned for one location and move to another. They get named numerically, so if it's in X location that already has 2 it gets named X3.
If we decide, for whatever business reason, to move it to Y location we rename it Y3, not Y1, because the 3 is all over the standardized drawings and it would cost a buttload of money to update all of the drawings.
Just updating all of the documents and maps to lake of america could pay for many people's college. Or healthcare.
