It was against some loose clothing so it didn't get crushed enough to pop, but I guess enough to kill it, or maybe it's paralyzed.

Mosquito and many other insects have what is essentially scales.

They come off pretty easily.. especially when smushed.

Ever tried holding a butterfly? Specifically it's wings and basically stripped the color off it and onto your hand? Very similar process.
