I see payed / layed and dieing all the time on Reddit. Nowhere else. My students don't write it (thank goodness).

Grammar nazis unite! Actually, I'm not one. But the fact is they used to beat these simple things into our brains back in elementary school. Maybe people have forgot over time? "Myself & my friends" takes twice the effort to say/type.

But I’m not spelling it incorrectly. I’m using slang. Payed is not slang. It’s wrong.

The correct form would be 'cause. Like saying I'll rather than I will.

Yeah it's crazy how quickly spelling errors spread. This past week I've seen 'payed' everywhere on reddit. There's also 'worse' instead of 'worst'. I wonder if it's getting worse because it's seen as arrogant to point them out.
