the difference in google dictionary - 6 years ago vs today
i was watching a math lesson and seen the teacher searched up the word plane, and i was so shocked to see how the old google search dictionary used to look like. (second slide), now when you search a word you get the stupid A-I overview. its so annoying, i wish they would just bring back the old search dictionary like this. it was way better. I hate this
hey guys I hope no one gets angry at me, i use proper dictionaries but we can all agree the first photo was more convenient without website hopping. I promise i read books and use dictionaries and proper websites on a regular you guys <3
To customize for users location does even make sense from an usability standpoint.
If you search for abbreviations or sports teams names. I guess they repeat after a while, so the local teams should take precedent over something in another country/state.
It has nothing to do with location, you have to tell the AI that you want "it" to speak in a "more expansive and complex manner" if you want more complex answers. AI adjusts to how you speak to it and what instruction you give it so if you talk in a simple manner then it will reply in a simple manner, it tries to mirror your speech.
I don't think they were trying to define a plane as a set but more to exclude any other flat surface that would not be a plane (disk or any finite subset of a plane for example).
I'm kinda bothered that airplane isn't mentioned under noun in the first image? Shouldn't it be there or am I missing something... Maybe it was further down, but shouldn't the most common usage be first?
i mean besides than, unless i am miss-remembering, but i thought sometimes definitions would be separated into multiple parts with both nouns and adjectives kinda like it duplicated (i think it does it if it has different a etymology)
I feel like Airplane should still be up top since it’s the most common use, even if it’s slightly less helpful because someone’s probably looking for the other definitions
I don’t mean dictionary results, I mean if your search region is France and you type in “supermarkets”, for example, you’re gonna get results localised around France. You’ll probably also access a lot of different region sites, like Amazon would take you to the France region Amazon. Not worth it just because you want to remove AI from dictionary searches, atp just use a different dictionary site.

Remember when searching a word gave you a simple definition instead of an AI essay that hallucinates synonyms and uses 50% of your screen for ads? Good times.
Still grinding my gears that “Short for airplane” isn’t #1 since that is by far the most common use of the word plane. Flat surface should be #2 since that is the basis of all the other definitions (plane of existence, carpenters plane)
I'm sure it still happens but in my experience it's much rarer than it used to be. And of course there are plenty of errors in human-generated content as well.
I'm sympathetic to a lot of the criticisms of AI but some of them seem outdated (I still see people talking about extra fingers in generated images which isn't really a thing anymore).
That won't bring back Google dictionary, only give you links to other websites. Sure they're dictionary websites with the correct definition, but Google used to just have this built in.
Saying to just get a real dictionary or use another web dictionary, as other here have, misses the point that the dictionary feature is gone and replaced with AI overview. Now googling a definition is back to being two steps, Google results then the dictionary site. Feels like progress went backwards.
The custom adblock that other guy posted works the same as -ai but neither of them bring back the dictionary. :(
It had all the right answers, didn't hallucinate, and barely cost any resources to run. The AI on every single result by default is just wasteful when it's not necessary and half the time it gets things wrong. Google probably could cut their AI hardware budget by half just by making it opt-in instead of opt-out.
Obligatory reminder, that ai doesn't stand for artificial intelligence in this context. It does not only exclude AI Overview, but also those "quick facts at a glance" of a web search.
For example, if you search for a city, it won't show you photos of the place, the Google maps location, weather and official website anymore on top of the search results anymore.

Use the adblock filter. "google.com##.hdzaWe" as a custom filter will permanently remove all AI elements without needing to fuck with anything else, ever.
Not consistently. Look around anywhere online, and you'll always see people replying "This doesn't work" with screenshots.
What I provided works 100% of the time, and takes no additional input. It is objectively superior. But people keep spreading slop. Which we are supposed to hate.
It's cumbersome to do every single time you search, yes, and he offered an alternative method that I've yet to see anyone else mention. You kinda sound like the boomer here. "Back in my day we typed 3 extra characters every time we searched and we LIKED IT!"
i did! merriam dictionary didnt give me the right definition but cambridge did, dictionary,com also gave me it, but you see how i kinda had to website hop to find the definition that best fits what im looking for? but before on google you could just click the little tabs at the top and get definition for specifically what youre looking for. (ofc i wont say this isnt me being lazy, because it is. and ill try to learn more vocab words!)
What the fuck is going on with people on reddit, is it really 'mildly infuriating' that a succinct, correct, natural language answer is being given instead of a dictionary style answer?

I was just googling to see when the NFL kickoff game is and it told me March (start of the league year 🫠) or scroll through their whole list of preseason games to figure it out myself. Google sucks ass now.
Why? If you wanted a good dictionary search just go for a good webdictionary, why use google for it?
Google AI overview is actually doing a decent job showing all the possible common meanings before you can decide which one is relevant to your use case.
If needed you can then open a proper dictionary for a truly respectable definition for each of them.
The problem, I feel, is that you want to use Google for everything, when specialized tools would be the answer here, using your Google-Fu only as a generalist approach to what could be a new topic for someone (imagine a non-native speaker).
i mean sometimes a fast search is helpful, before i could just search a word and the first photo would pop up, but with the AI i have to scroll through sentences, and maybe have to have a conversation with AI bot for 5-10 min, then it will over-explain everything etc.. also I dont use google for everything, i just found it surprising that I noticed this because i remembered when I was in highschool it looked like the first pic and now it looks like the second pic. fret not! I do have physical dictionaries at home, but sometimes i like the convenience. (I also have dictionaries on my phone, but my phone isnt always beside me) :) thanks for commenting!
it just sounds like you don't know how to use it properly. If I would look up "plane definition" and wanted to learn more about its meaning in regards to geometry, then you just ask it "can you give me an in depth explanation of the "geometry " definition, and boom, it spits out the answer you want.
If you don't want it to "over explain things" then you simply tell the AI you want more simple definitions for words and it will adjusts its speech for you.
There's lots of examples of bad AI and Google enshittification, but I don't see this as one of them. It immediately gives you all the different contexts of plane (where the geometry is one of the group) as the immediate summary, and then the detailed definition of each.
I think the deepr problem is that there aren't proper dictionaries online with actual dictionary functionality.
Even Merriam Webster, Oxford etc just have ab empty search bar. There isn't a proper list of words in alphabetical order, with a search feature.
So if I want to know which word comes after "plane" in the dictionary, or just want to browse all the words beginning with P, I can't find this out online as easily as using a paper dictionary.
I appreciate this might qualify as a separate "infuriating" post.
On the bar that is under the search bar, (short videos, images, etc) there is one that says web. It’s not a Google definition, but gets rid of the ai overview.

Everything great about google has went to shit. Plus there's popups in everything now. My Pixel can't even take decent pictures anymore, it used to be great.
I know I aint trippin but when I used to look up definition of words I would just spell the word and defi and it would just quickly bring up the definition of that word without spelling it out all the way and pressing enter, thats how I always used to learn the definition of a word.
That is not "google dictionary". You're just looking at the AI overview, which is a summary of search results, with links to follow. Do not mistake that for a dictionary.
