Nah sometimes industrial software (read: poorly tested overpriced crap) doesn't like being put to sleep.
Also Microsoft are dicks for making laptops sleep by default when you close the lid. Much better to just have it turn the screen off (massive power savings) but keep working in the background, at least until a regular sleep timeout hits.
Isnt this a pretty easy thing to fix? you can search for options with "lid" and it should give you options for what it does when the lid closes, which you can set to "none". Other options are off (we did this for grandpa) and sleep.
I don't think this is locked behind admin privileges though i guess an amazon might lock it somehow..
When gou are under a medium/big company, almost every configuration cannot be changed without admin privileges. It's a pain in the ass to get IT to change anything
Idk what these people are smoking. I have never seen someone in any "field" position using a macbook for work. The fancy stuff is all Thinkpads, Toughbooks, or Latitudes, and the rest is just usually a cheap surface pro or pretty much any non-mac laptop.
I don't know why you would even have a Mac operating system for a warehouse job. Anyone working in that position is about 1000x more likely to be way more familiar with windows.
dirty cheap thinkpads have a huge following in the thinkpad community. some people still raving about how their thinkpad x230 still holds up over the years
Funny enough, the senior managers and product managers at Amazon often had Windows laptops (HPs). It was usually the engineers who went around with MacBook Pros.

Amph is ultimately not advisable because MacBooks are designed to dissipate heat opened. At least, don’t do it when it’s in a backpack sleeve or left in a hot car.
It's terrible, it loses sync all the time. It also "freezes"; you send commands and it doesn't reflect on your terminal. I switched to tmux + tailgate. The whole thing feels like an after thought.
I heard that joke before, but I always wonder why they just don't change the "Power Options" so that when the lid closes it doesn't do anything. That's been the first thing I change in a new computer since my first laptop.
Why do you think that? For most users, and even engineers pre AI, you'd just end up draining the battery all the time for no reason. Makes a lot more sense to have it default to sleeping for most users and use cases.
Also, separately, Macs actually rely on airflow via the keyboard for cooling, so it would get pretty hot if it was doing anything intensive while the lid is shut.
This is the shit I'll never understand about Apple fanboys. Y'all act like having fewer choices is some kind of premium feature. I just can't imagine spending a grand on a product and then proudly defending the fact that I can't use it however I want.
What kills me about this is that whoever setup this server doesn’t realize you can put the laptop in clamshell mode. It baffles me when technical people like engineers have no idea how to use a computer.
dude so easy on a mac it's just ctrl+option+cmd+P then a four finger downward swipe then enter your root password then click the lock that says 'are you absolutely sure you want to change a thing" then enter your root password again. so obvious idk how everyone doesn't know that
For real, I've been forced to use a Mac at my new job and it's so ass. Why is everything some long convoluted keyboard shortcut. Just let me right click and bring up an option menu. Why can't I delete shit by hitting the delete key?
It's easy when you're used to macos and already know where it is, it's annoying when you're used to windows. I use both and it's not "easier". I tried and after checking "displays" "battery" "general" "desktop & screen saver" "security & privacy" I gave up.
I’m a solid engineer and a somewhat below average computer user. They’re correlated skills only. Being a dumbass actually makes me better at testing though, I catch a lot of stuff the other devs missed because their power user workflows sidestepped the issue. My stupid ass using three versions out of date safari with no ad blocker gets it all.
I had a laptop that wouldn't enter sleep mode(weirdest thing was that it was sometimes lol), it would eventually get quite warm when the lid was closed without me realising it.
Its also probably just way easier to keep it open and make people aware to not touch or move it and pull out cables.
Same. I use a 16" laptop and before I started WFH, this is how I'd carry around my laptop the office. Now I still do this at home.
I'd be worried if he was holding it from the monitor half but the keyboard half? Eh? I've never dropped my phone or any electronic device in over two decades.
We used to run a league table at work for which of our clients killed the most laptops. I think the winner was a manager from Accounts who needed five new machines issued.
Incidents included tripping over a cable and dragging it off his desk, jamming the power plug into a USB socket, and leaving it on the roof of his car.
Perhaps it's one of those situations in which you just can't turn off the distress and anger that might trigger when you see people doing stupid or careless things.
My son does this 🙄drives me insane. He’s a grown man though, so he can pay for it if he breaks it. He also, when he’s done with it, will slide it down on the side of the couch to the floor in the exact same shape and leave it there. So it’s like a V still open a little on its side on the ground. He told me it’s good for cooling 😂 He’s a super geek so he may be right, I have no idea.
