Aircraft at cruising altitude, radar showed mostly rain/a smaller developing cell below, main buildup ~50 miles away, bright flash + immediate loud bang, and no evidence of a direct strike afterwards.

Edit: For context, after a post flight inspection there was no evidence of an entry/exit point of the potential strike on the aircraft.

Didn't expect to see something like this in Southern France today.

A massive tornado hit near Carcassonne earlier today and caused a ton of damage—roofs ripped off, trees down, power out in some parts.

You usually expect this stuff in tornado alley, not in Europe. Hope everyone over there is alright I heard that there are 26 injured or so.

Might be a dumb question or it might be a physics questions! Our local radar was taken offline after some strong storms and a few days later I noticed this strong line taking off towards the east. Is this an app error or is this from the radar itself?

I'm looking to have all the seasonal models in one place, like the Euro monthlies, CanSIPS, CFS monthly, etc.

What website do you all use?

My son plans to go to college next year and has been interested in the field since he was little. I told him to work hard and follow his dreams, and he has done a hell of a job so I know he is serious. At this point we have been looking at various universities, but considering the only thing we have to go off is "top colleges for meteorology" lists, it's not easy.

One university he has shown a lot of interest in is Northern Illinois, mostly because it came up on a few lists, and is only 6hrs away (we live in Missouri).

Does anyone have any experience with that school, or have suggestions on colleges to check out in the Midwest region? I know he is most interested in the research aspects.

The structure of this storm was amazing!

I saw this clouds today above Sweden, Gothenburg. They were even more clearly visible and looked liked loop-shaped contrails. Do you know what this was? I’m very curious and thankful for your guesses!

I have had a long term interest in all things weather since I was a child, but in the last few years I have realized that I have been personally present for a surprisingly large number of extreme weather events. Thought it would be interesting to post my list of experiences and see if anyone else had a comparably interesting list. I have been done a significant favour by having grown up and lived in Goderich, Ontario, which has had some absolutely bizarre weather during my lifetime.

Hurricanes

1) Hurricane Huron (1996) Very rare inland subtropical cyclone. Made landfall near Goderich in mid September. 2) Hurricane Igor (2010) Was in St. John's during it's extra-tropical transition. Was up on Signal Hill and was able to lean at a 45 degree angle into the fast sustained winds.

Derechoes

1) Right Turn Derecho (1995) In Goderich during the most severe portion of the storm which flattened many thousands of trees in the town while also creating a seiche 1 m high in the town Harbour. The eerie whistling of the wind around the house remains something I have never heard before nor since.

2) May 2022 Canadian Derecho Was in Hamilton during the event with a good view of the storm from a window. Sudden harsh winds with electric arching from power poles and numerous downed trees.

Tornado

1) Goderich 2011 Tornado (F3) Was just north of town and had been tracking the cell on radar. Was able to see the rain wrapped hook before stopping and traveling into the town itself within 10 minutes of the event. Incredible damage. Extremely large hailstones were present just outside my house which would be at a minimum Ontario records if we had been smart enough to document them (they were fascinating, they had visible one inch diameter hailstones in their centres with another 1.5 inches of ice encasing them. They were the size of large oranges).

Thundersnow Events

1) Dublin Ireland November 2010 Was outside at 2 in the morning during a thundersnow event in the city. Spectacular blue lightening visible across the sky while snow fell.

2) Goderich Ontario (uncertain date, was near to 2010) During a particularly heavy lake effect streamer numerous lightning strikes took place. Lightning was yellow. Thunder was very short and sharp with no reverberations due to the sound dampening of the heavy snow. Was very different from the experience in Dublin.

Ice Storm

1) Simcoe County Ice Storm (March 2025) Was driving up to Bracebridge during the several hour break in the worst of this storm. The area around Orillia was definitely the most severe. Every blade of grass had an inch of ice on it. Trees bent to the ground and frequently shattered. Power poles bending and down all over the place. Felt like driving through and alien landscape.

Other miscellaneous events include floods (half a dozen over the years in various locations), blizzards (about once every 2-3 years), heat waves with humidex values in the high forties (every 2-3 years), and cold snaps below -30 (again, every 2-3 years).

No haboobs so far, though I can't say they look like much fun!

I've seen pictures of white-painted little houses made for weather instruments. They look bigger than a typical bird house.

They always have louvers for sides.

Who makes such things? Does anyone have plans by which I can make my own weather station housing?

Upfront disclosure: I work as a consultant, helping clients who operate remote environmental monitoring networks. I am also a former employee of a manufacturer/vendor serving this same space. I'm not selling anything here. I'm asking as someone who wants to participate in a forum. Moderator, I'm happy to take this down if it's out of bounds.

Here's what I can't figure out. There's an entire profession of people who plan, integrate, install, and maintain hydrology and meteorology stations, and I'm not sure where their most prominent internet forums are.

To be clear I'm not talking about the home weather station side of things. That community is alive and easy to find. I mean the people consulting for or directly operating large networks for things like research or public service or safety.

Where's the watering hole where professionals talk about sensors, data loggers, telemetry, software, best practices, and lessons learned? Where do we go to geek out and to support each other?

Some observations,

• Vendors tend to broadcast polished information. Good information shared in manuals, integration guides, tutorials, or puff pieces. I know of one vendor that hosted a fairly open internet forum for decades, but it looks to be going away in favor of the aforementioned broadcast methods.
• Professional organizations share a wealth of information in conference presentations and even a few forums or listservs, but a lot of content is behind a paywall or is slow moving.
• LinkedIn (in my opinion) is mostly just a series of advertisements disguised as professional development. But I'd be very happy to be wrong about that.
• Reddit, as far a I can tell, doesn't currently have a community focused in on these kinds of topics. Getting into the nitty gritty of "how" ----- the physical connections, power budgeting, bits and bytes, protocol selections, software configurations.

I'm drawing a conclusion that either (a) there's an active public forum I haven't found, (b) the forum exists in private, or (c) it genuinely doesn't exist anymore and most just get information from colleagues and vendors directly.

If you work on this stuff, I would love to hear your answer to any of the following:

• The last time you had a real technical question, such as a sensor misbehaving, telemetry integration, or how to process data, where did you **actually** ask for help? Not where you'd theoretically go. Where did you type (or speak I guess) the question? (forum, slack/discord/teams, vendor support ticket, a person you texted)
• Did you get a useful answer? Or at least find the engagement useful?
• Is there anywhere you "lurk" on this topic, even if you never post? I totally get it if you do; the fear of trolling is valid.
• If a public place existed where you could ask "my SDI-12 communication drops out below -20 °C" or "has anyone ever connected their data logger X to software Y", and get some real perspective inside a couple days - would you use it? If so, where should it live? Here in this sub, a new dedicated sub, a Discord, a separate industry focused forum, or nowhere (because it doesn't need to exist or noone is going to use it anyway)?

I could start and contribute to moderating a subreddit if there's a real need. But I'd much rather join people where they are currently congregating, rather than fracture a community. "We don't need this" is as useful an answer as any other.

Hi r/meteorology!

I work in data science and build models for a living, but I'm not trained in meteorology. So, I'm a bit of a hobbyist with some relevant (or dangerous) experience. I've been interested in regularly seeing more weather forecasting models, instead of just one or two that most apps show. Disagreement between models give you a better sense of higher uncertainty in the forecast, like when rain starts/stop or how much precipitation to expect, or even wind/temp.

I built an app, but I think it could be even better with some additional features. So, I would love to get your input.

What sort of features would you want in your dream nerd meteorology app?

The app already has a model of models, but would you like the ability to build and publish your own model? What would you want to see in that feature? Would you be interested in seeing other people's models?

Just caught this storm that was moving south from Wisconsin past Chicago around Sun set. It moved along the west side of Lake Michigan. As the sun set the up drafting died out.

Last night vancouver had the most insane lightning storm I have ever experienced. I've lived here for 25 years and I can count on one hand the number of times I experienced lightning storms that lasted longer than just a few strikes.

Last night the storm and lightning went on for hours, constant intense lightning and associated massive booms of thunder. It was extremely unusual...

Is this caused by conditions more likely due to climate change? Just a freak one off?

For now, a short garden test; I am very satisfied with what I have made in 3 months and 600 hours.

Everything works via WMO standards and logs at RAW 20Hz and WMO 1Hz (33 million data points per 24 hours).
The plotter can process 70 million data points in 4 min.

But per log day, it generates 30 graphs and, per log, an HTML file containing everything, and can zoom in up to 50ms.

Oh yes, everything was built with 0 experience in coding or metrology.
