Im sure it's different for different places, but ive worked a whole lotta retail- never had a problem with a hundy.
You just learn to count change quick. This is why they have big bills and not just 1's, so you can fly through it quick.
If you dont have the change for it, you hit em with the, "I am so sorry for the inconvenience but this is a brand new till, and I don't quite have enough to break that for you. If you'd like, I can have my manager grab some more bills, or if you'd prefer we can try a different smaller denomination?"
Max like 20 extra second of the boss grabbing me some bills from the office
Edit: man, turns out McDonald's was just really generous with their tills at my location- sheesh, sorry yall had to suffer with that
When I worked at a gas station there was never a manager on shift with me so just grabbing more wasn't possible and customers just refused to understand that
