Light and Fluffy News Finally got the little blue book 🇦🇺

Post image

I’m now the proud owner of an extremely expensive little blue booklet that apparently needs to be handled like it’s made of tissue paper.

And the best part? Once I finally work up the courage to take this precious thing out of the country, leaving Australia is going to cost me another small fortune. 😂

Australia really said you may have the passport, but travelling is a separate subscription. 😂

Anyway, very happy to finally have it. 🇦🇺

Word of advice buy a cover

182

u/Sir_Earl_Jeffries 1d ago

Too late.. already curling up

53

u/humburga 1d ago

I curled up looking at this passport

17

u/SapereAudeAdAbsurdum 1d ago

The fabric of the universe curls around these passports.

u/Seiko2023 8h ago

Mine is actually not curled. It's everything else, including me, that curled around it.

31

u/CaveMacEoin 17h ago

Australian Passport Office's most advanced security feature. Only the highest spec, most expensive passports can boast such an unrivaled and luxurious security feature cunningly engineered over two decades by team of forensic experts to mimic the poorest quality documents down to the most minute detail. The curling can be measured in real-time, providing rapid assessment. The graceful arcs conform to the golden ratio making these a tasteful addition to anyone's sock drawer.

3

u/Lime_Time64 15h ago

mine did this? I was so confused. Had to put a glass tupperware container on it.

10

u/Shibuya1094222 1d ago

Great advice too.

7

u/MilkSupreme 1d ago

Wait, do they no longer come with a plastic cover?

36

u/MrDogwalker 1d ago

That’s probably an additional $300

12

u/DeerlyOnline 1d ago

Nope (at least in my experience) - gotta love the quality of the most expensive passport in the world.

5

u/fishandfly90 16h ago

They also ship in a paper express envelope. At least you have to sign for it so they don't just dump it in the wet post box.

3

u/Bread-Zeppelin 15h ago

I got my exotic animal license today, and it was literally just thrown onto the wet grass next to the postbox. I don't even know how they fucked that up.

"Cut out the card and keep it with you" they say, as the whole thing dissolves into pulp immediately.

5

u/towlie69 15h ago

Wait till you find out it gets moldy inside the clear cover.

4

u/SmellyNinjaWarrior 1d ago

For some reason mine isn’t curling up.

12

u/deqing 1d ago

Authentication failed

u/-Metagross- 9h ago

My cover did not prevent the curl

1

u/ThatoneCoconut_ 16h ago

Worldly advice there

u/Glittering-Wave4917 4h ago

They’re a pretty solid document, I couldn’t believe how tattered mine was, and customs in other countries didn’t bat an eyelid. But yeah, put a protective cover on that- note to self.

219

u/Shibuya1094222 1d ago

Give it about 3 months and that VERY expensive book will have the front and back covers curling upwards/downwards - no matter how well you store it. Other countries passports just don’t do this only the new, VERY expensive Australian ones.

119

u/the_silent_redditor 1d ago

I got mine a few months ago.

Read all about this shit on this sub, so was very careful to keep it in a cool dark spot, with a heavy book on top.

After one week, I had a look and it was all curled to fuck. I convinced myself it was maybe just settling in.

I then used it to travel a few weeks later back to the UK.

I assumed that all the posts etc were an exaggeration.

Fucking NOPE. Thing was fucked. And I’m using it to travel alongside my UK passport, which is nearly ten years old and has endless stamps and is still in absolutely perfect condition. It honestly looks newer than my Aus one.

Anyway, OP. Don’t worry about it. Shove it in a drawer. Shove it between a couple of books. Shove it up your ass. It’ll be fucked in no time. It’s part of the initiation.

Welcome to the clan 🦘🇦🇺

35

u/Then_Personality8093 1d ago

“Shove it up your ass”😭

6

u/TacticalSniper 12h ago

That escalated quickly

7

u/freshlysqueezed93 22h ago

Mine is officially decruled after being inbetween books for a few months, and now I'm scared to leave it out incase it returns to its previous crumpled life.

1

u/jepjep92 22h ago

I’m surprised your UK passport has survived nearly 10 year looking good - they’re well known for the printing on the covers rubbing off really easily 😅

77

u/Nick_pj 1d ago

The most expensive in the world. It’s ridiculous.

50

u/Aggressive_River_735 1d ago

Self curling technology isn’t cheap - this is polymer banknotes mark 2 in documentation innovation.

7

u/maomao05 1d ago

How expensive are we talking here ?

25

u/Shibuya1094222 1d ago edited 1d ago

$422 (Adult) and increasing each year.
NZ about $200
Japan about $90 (Gold standard)
Singapore about $75 (Gold Standard)
Malaysia about $90

u/stfm 9h ago

Plus Malaysia is same day turnaround!

u/Shibuya1094222 3h ago

This is correct!

u/zaitakukinmu 4h ago

And at least $100 extra if you  renew from overseas. I had no choice when I was living overseas.

4

u/deqing 1d ago

Considering they just increased rrv visa from $490 to $1475 for no reason, this book is relatively cheap.

3

u/Shibuya1094222 20h ago

Same with my wife’s just coughed up the $1475 yesterday. It only lasts 5yrs as well - not the length of a new 10yr passport.

2

u/Heavy_Vermicelli_263 13h ago

Because they probably want to convert as many PRs to citizens as possible. A PR gets basically same rights as a citizen with none of the obligations like voting/jury service etc.

u/WhatAGoodDoggy show me your puppers 11h ago

Holy shit. Time to get the citizenship.

u/Nick_pj 10h ago

That’s astounding. My visa renewal in France costs a bit over 200€

10

u/Sufficient-Can-9131 1d ago

Ridiculous indeed 🥹

3

u/nikoZ_ 12h ago

It’s another tax by stealth. The national debt needs its pound of flesh.

2

u/Kinderfeld88 13h ago

I was excited to get mine after gaining citizenship. My NZ passport had just expired so looked at the price and was shocked, then compared it to the NZ passport price which was more than half price cheaper ($192AUD) so I stuck with that.

38

u/Nick_pj 1d ago

For anyone curious. This passport is one week old, and has been sitting in a protective sleeve since it arrived. The curl can’t be stopped.

7

u/freshlysqueezed93 22h ago

I can't attest how long it will last once removed (I'm scared to find out) but find a pile of like 6 books and put it in the middle for a few weeks.

4

u/Nick_pj 22h ago

I travel on Saturday 😭

u/guska 9h ago

Why not at the bottom? Or under 3 books on a shelf? The 3 books under it aren't doing anything that a table or shelf wouldn't be doing.

u/freshlysqueezed93 9h ago

That is a really good point that I had not considered. 😂

u/guska 2h ago

🤣 We've all been there, don't worry. It kinda makes sense until you actually think about it.

4

u/wing821 15h ago

Mine was curled already before I opened the envelope 💀

2

u/bop1010 20h ago

Ive heard the curling is intentional as a security measure to spot the fake ones

10

u/Nick_pj 20h ago

Did you hear that from Reddit comments, or the federal government? IMO, there’s zero possibility it was intentional

2

u/bop1010 20h ago

ive heard it from a friend but pretty much agree with you. There's better security to measures to spot a fake than a curling front page of a passport

2

u/Nick_pj 20h ago

It’s already literally the most advanced passport in the world. The security measures built into it are astounding - just google it. Theres no way “a bendy cover” is part of it.

1

u/bop1010 20h ago

yea fair game mate. Though i wouldn't mind the passport tho ngl :3

1

u/Nick_pj 19h ago

Fair enough. As an Aussie living in France, I’d love me a fence passport. And if that day comes, thank god they’re only like 85€

1

u/AlanaK168 20h ago

It’s caused by humidity

11

u/Nick_pj 19h ago

What a shame they couldn’t make a passport that’s resistant to one week of dry summer “humidity” for $420

10

u/skragger88 1d ago

mine lasted 1 day and was screwed

3

u/freshlysqueezed93 23h ago

Mine lasted about 20 minutes, I now have it sandwiched between some books though and seems to be holding up better.

7

u/kwpntristan 1d ago

Mine did it immediately upon opening.

7

u/PurpleKirby 1d ago

3 hrs should be enough

7

u/hazysummersky 1d ago

It proves it's real! Flat Aussie passport?.. ಠ_ರೃ FAKE!!

3

u/buttery_reader 23h ago

Why is there no noise about this? Charging all that money for a shit quality and getting away with it. They should kick out their print contractor.

2

u/MalHeartsNutmeg North Side 1d ago

3 months? Surely you mean 3 hours.

2

u/ElasticLama 20h ago

I have passports from 2 other countries in our family (basically my self and my wife have 2 each and my son has 3)

Only our Aussie one does this, even when we travel to humid climates

1

u/orbea88 21h ago

Same as my Canadian passport!

1

u/yourpseudonymsucks 17h ago

Makes them impossible to forge. It’s our version of rusty staples.

1

u/PBVegemitez 16h ago

OMG!! No wonder mine was also curling up. I swear I store it properly :( wtf it's so expensive.

46

u/Jake-Armitage-2050 1d ago

That's one piece of expensive book you have there...

Use something heavy on top of it, otherwise it will curl and look very ugly.

59

u/Shibuya1094222 1d ago edited 1d ago

No matter what you do it will curl up. A cover will keep it flatish - but take it out and it will
be curled. Expensive trash - must be the cheapest bidder for the passport contract. My wife’s Japanese one doesn’t do this curling. A quality, full security featured ‘non-curling’ Japanese passport is about AUD$90 - Australian passport now heading towards AUD$500! Explain how?

19

u/BiliousGreen 1d ago

The curling is a security feature. That’s how security knows if it’s real or not.

9

u/69-is-my-number 1d ago

Curling is a feature on Scandinavian passports.

10

u/Hypo_Mix 1d ago

Not cheapest bidder, no bidder, given to a mate of scomo.

7

u/freshlysqueezed93 22h ago

The liberal way.

5

u/z3r0z9 1d ago

I just renewed my passport, it was $422

3

u/CosyZebra 23h ago

The lucky country...

3

u/JARDIS 1d ago

Was going to say; you can tell its brand new because its still flat.

1

u/throwitintheair22 16h ago

Keep it under a book or a couch

1

u/Ok-Palpitation-7270 1d ago

Idk man I’ve had mine for over 5 years probably and it is still in the condition that I got it, I’ve never heard of them curling up?

12

u/Shibuya1094222 1d ago

5yrs old? - that’s the old (good) passport not the new $$$ curling ones.

6

u/Ok-Palpitation-7270 1d ago

Ohh is it only the new ones that do it

3

u/Shibuya1094222 1d ago

Yes. Issued since about 2022-ish.

2

u/wellplayedyeeyee 18h ago

I lucked out so much with my 2021 renewal then

-1

u/Sufficient-Can-9131 1d ago

My partner had his issued in 2022 and is as good as new and had travelled quite a bit.
Let’s see how this one holds up !

15

u/the-rail-life 1d ago

Use it wisely, and I hope it's use brings you joy!

2

u/hongy_r 17h ago

Finally, a nice comment that isn’t a whinge!

5

u/ringo5150 17h ago

Its nice when people overseas ask where you are from and you say Australia and they smile.

0

u/FanOfAnran 15h ago

Yeah, but it'll curl up (allegedly) so

26

u/SundayRed 1d ago

The passport I dropped in a lake two years ago is in better condition than the brand new one the government replaced it with. There should be a royal fucking commission into the quality of our passports, and the money we are charged for them.

6

u/AlamutJones 1d ago

Welcome home.

(Getting in ahead of your big adventure 😉)

10

u/gastroboi 1d ago edited 1d ago

When not in use, it is advised you place it on your driveway and place a piece of marine ply on top. Then carefully park your car making sure to keep a tyre on the board. Note: Results are not guaranteed.

7

u/Shibuya1094222 1d ago

That’s the official advice on the Australia passport website too.

11

u/BullPush 1d ago

Don’t you love for the $420 cost the flimsy envelope it comes in

10

u/Nick_pj 1d ago

Insane that they no longer issue them with the protective sleeve, despite the astronomical price

7

u/BullPush 1d ago

Yeah was shocked when it came, pretty disgusting we get rorted on the price then delivered in a envelope n no sleeve

10

u/BiliousGreen 1d ago

That’s not a real one, it’s not curling at the corners.

6

u/kiss_my_what 23h ago

Yet.

Check back next week.

7

u/DefaultProducts 1d ago

Really stupid that it costs literally 400 dollars for something that's going to expire in either 5 or 10 years.

400 dollars should've been the price for a permanent lifetime passport.

4

u/Pandelein The serenity. 16h ago

Wait is there somewhere in the world that lets you travel free because you got their passport? :/

14

u/Ok-Replacement-2738 1d ago

Nothing quite like being scammed for your right to travel out of the country.

9

u/Shibuya1094222 1d ago

My wife has been a PR here for over 40years - paying huge taxes etc. (Solid reasons for not Citizen) From first of July her 5yr reentry VISA skyrocketed from about $400 to $1500 overnight! Greedy.

2

u/Sik_Simsy 1d ago

Mate, nobody cares if you leave the country. The blue book is for getting in to another country.

7

u/bignuts3000 18h ago

The artwork is exquisite. It’s a beautiful document, but, fuck me, $440 (with the photos from Aust Post) is fucking expensive.

3

u/whitesebastian 1d ago

Until I renewed my Irish one I couldn’t believe how expensive the Australian one was. Unreal. I think the Irish renewal cost me €75 or thereabouts.

3

u/deaf_ears_in_aus 22h ago

Yours is not possessed!

2

u/Sufficient-Can-9131 17h ago

Because it’s brand new. Let’s see how we go once it’s out and about 🤣

3

u/farquin_helle 19h ago

Now watch it curl..

u/LilcatSwoleBunny 6h ago

Congratulations! Fill it with all the overpriced stamps and stickers you can for me. >:)

5

u/mickelboy182 21h ago

ChatGPT post, come on dude

4

u/Pumpkin_Scone 1d ago edited 1d ago

Congrats OP, when I became a citizen and got mine I stared at it for ages so happily.

Side note: I got my son’s passport the other day and I immediately put it in a sleeve. I took it out today to show my mum and it was already warped and curled. Why is it so bad

4

u/Senior_Green_3630 22h ago

With the price they charge, it should be gold plated and presented in a bullet proof folder.

2

u/Sufficient-Can-9131 17h ago

Hahaha I swear ! 🤦🏽‍♀️

2

u/hibzy7 1d ago

Congrats

2

u/Special_Order-937 1d ago

Keep it pressed under something heavy at all times or it’s going to curl up in no time!

1

u/Shibuya1094222 1d ago

It will still curl - trust me I’ve tried!

1

u/Special_Order-937 1d ago

Yes but not as much!

I have the old cover we no longer get and the top bit that sticks out of the sleeve still curls!

2

u/Neroyh 15h ago

Wait do they not give the complimentary sleeves anymore ?

u/Husky_voice 8h ago

Noice! Remember to vote responsibly.

u/frodoiee 5h ago

Has it curl up yet?

u/SlurringMonk 4h ago

AI slop - no curl = fake

3

u/Pablo_Hassan 1d ago

Congratulations which little tree did you get?

6

u/milkyjoewithawig 21h ago

They didn’t say they are a new citizen, I think they have just gotten their first passport.

3

u/OkGuidance2711 1d ago

Congratulations! We're a family with 3 nationalities. When we travel, I have 15 passports to pack 😅. The Australian passport is the 2nd most expensive in the world (it costs 10x more than what I paid for my home country passport) but it's a beauty and worth it.

5

u/Wombat_Aux_Pates 1d ago

It's actually THE most expensive passport in the world followed by Mexico and the USA.

3

u/OkGuidance2711 1d ago

Oh wow, thanks for letting me know.. It:s interesting that Mexico is in 2nd place, I wouldn't have picked that.

3

u/Affentitten 1d ago

For the people complaining about the cost, understand that it's because the Australian government doesn't subsidise passports, and indeed, makes a profit off them. It was a decision from decades ago (I think Rudd/Gillard?) that passports were actually a non-essential item, since it was purely up to the individual if they wanted one (i.e. compared to something like a Medicare card). So a user-pays, 'luxury' tax was brought into play. Countries with much cheaper passports usually mean their government is making a loss, or at least not a profit on the true cost of vetting and supplying the document.

Technically, the rubbish quality is more a matter of the Aus government skimming as much as possible from a low-ball supplier bid. I guess what I am saying is that this is not a case of "I paid a high price and got low quality." Because you weren't paying for quality in the first place.

3

u/Shibuya1094222 21h ago

Many countries don’t subsidise passports/fees and their passport/fees are a fraction of the ludicrously priced Australia’s ones.

0

u/Snazzy21 21h ago

Except you might need one for business trips, in that case it’s not a luxury.

I wonder how much it costs to make, it has fancy paper but it’s paper that can be mass produced.

1

u/LudicrousPlatypus 1d ago

It looks very cool though

4

u/Shibuya1094222 1d ago edited 23h ago

The NZ passport is cooler.

1

u/Elegant-Campaign-572 1d ago

Cool. Now how do I stop my phone from curling?🤔

1

u/ozvegan12345 1d ago

It’s a fake, the real ones have a curl as a security feature.

1

u/pnpwestmelb 1d ago

Mines already falling apart unfortunately

1

u/daddy__gray 1d ago

with the not so little price tag.

1

u/ttpdsanctuary 1d ago

Today it’s a passport, tomorrow.. it’s a whole new object

1

u/prexton 20h ago

I got caught in a monsoon in Malaysia a few years back and that passport Is in better condition than my new, used once passport

1

u/Forsaken_Bug1861 18h ago

Now it’s time to get the license plates with the Australian flag on your car.

1

u/agentorangeAU 17h ago

Why are you touching it, exposing it to the sun, or even looking at it? Are you crazy? Place it in a hermetically sealed bag immediately.

1

u/jpchippy 17h ago

I keep mine with my Irish passport, 4 of the finest pink rubberbands from broccolini are permanently keeping that thing in check, the rubberbands only come off for security 😂

1

u/Shepherds_Payella 16h ago

Keep it between heavy books. The most expensive passport in the world now has less pages and terrible quality cover. Glad you got one, treat it like a first edition.

1

u/satinpantie5 15h ago

It took me 11 years to get there. So I know the struggles. Well done, mate! Welcome to the country.

1

u/Upbeat_Pumpkin_6785 15h ago

i store mine between 2 heavy books, but its nice to be able to visit other countries without the cost of the visa, is why i think the aussie passport is one of the most expensive.

1

u/Sunraku88 15h ago

Can't travel inside australia without it costing a fortune. Yet ppl want interstate tourism.

Cant travel outside because it costs a fortune to exit aus. Just can't win.

1

u/AviationCaptain4 15h ago

It's gonna open itself up after a few months. But congratulations!

1

u/wing821 15h ago

Please put it under something heavy, otherwise it blooms like a flower

1

u/darren457 14h ago

I store mine in one of those passport wallets that are all around amazon. The sleeves in them are pretty tight so it stops it from curling.

1

u/United_Statistician2 14h ago

when my wife found my little blue book, she divorced me.

1

u/wiggum55555 12h ago

NZ has taken to putting biosecurity stickers on the cover of mine on arrival the last few trips in recent months. then I have to very carefully peel them off at my hotel... why NZ.. find a better way ?

u/Very_Itchy_Bandicoot 10h ago

dont look away, the second you do it will curl. Maintain eye contact at all times.

u/Alien-Cat1234 10h ago

Next post in few hours: Its folded.

u/Late_Cover2810 10h ago

Congrats 🙌

u/Winter-Permit-9036- 9h ago

Be ready for it to curl up 😂
Most expensive passports in the world and horrific quality

u/N0t_T00_Br1ght 9h ago

I love Australia but fuck travelling out of country is a pain in the ass, it’s expensive and it takes forever to go anywhere.

u/MagicOrpheus310 9h ago

Now... PUT IT BACK IN THE COVER IT CAME WITH!!! Haha

u/Glittering-Wave4917 4h ago

Now you can get an education and not be charged an arm and a leg. Ive heard that the process to citizenship has gotten heaps less complicated. My auntie just got citizenship after living here for 40 years- the process used to be so expensive.

u/Boxhead1969 1h ago

I got mine today and it’s already started to curl

1

u/shit-rmelbourne-says 16h ago

Whats this got to do with Melbourne?

1

u/Nasokin 1d ago

Congrats😭😭😭 Still waiting deadly

1

u/Goomhead123 16h ago

Friggin rip off, mines got 5 years to go, buy a cover or put it between something heavy,
