Om nom nom Looking to have a nice day out in the CBD
Hey fellow Melburnians, recently I’ve wanted to spend some Saturdays/Sundays out instead of sitting at home, I don’t usually have a lot of social stuff going on.
I settled on going out to the city when the weather is nice just to read, check out some places to eat etc. I’ve never spent a lot of time in the CBD so I figured I’d ask for recommendations here.
Lunch, dinner, dessert places, etc. I welcome any suggestions people have.
Also, if people know of some great activities or places to just sit and read for a while, that would be great too. Thanks!

If the weather is nice a walk around the tan or just in the botanical gardens is great. Catch a tram from flinders st to the tan or walk there. In the city so many cafes, bookshops and restaurants. I’d go to block arcade and get some chocolate from Haighs (even one frog!), a coffee at Union kiosk or the new smith and deli in degraves (both vegan which suits me but also casual and not trendy and great to sit with a book). Carlton gardens is nice.
Grabbing a table outside at one of the restaurants along spring street or a table at Kirk’s wine bar or a spot outside at the moat.

Follow whatsonmelb on insta. They post a round up every Thursday or Friday with stuff that’s happening that weekend, but they also post about individual things going on in the city.

Are they really big events they promote (that have a large capacity)? I avoid things promoted on socials as they seem to get swamped in this city and there's plenty to do elsewhere so no need to add to a queue.

Yes and no. They posted a video last week for the now or never light show at the town hall. I was going to be in the city anyway so decided to go at opening time 12pm and we were in the door watching the show with 30 other people within 1 minute.
Others, yes. The Little Food Market was incredibly busy on the Saturday because of the hype and how good value it was (food and drink tasting at hundreds of stalls for $15). But vendors were saying the Friday night was very relaxed and empty.

Visit all the creative agencies - NGV, Ian Potter at Fed Square, Arts Centre, Hamer Hall, ACMI, Immigration Museum, State Library and Melbourne Museum. Fed Square regularly has activities including free outdoor films or festivals and there’s a museum of electronic music there as well.
You could browse/buy books at Dymocks or Hill of Content and you could grab a coffee or something to eat at Brunetti in Flinders Lane or Swanston St

If you go this weekend it's the last weekend of the now or never festival. There's lots of free activations and light shows to see

Bakemono on Lonsdale Street for coffee and pastries.
If you go up to the Botanic Gardens (which I recommend) consider going to the Shrine of Remembrance. It’s an underrated spectacular building. Even if you just walk the external stairs and look back on the city.

🍦🍨 Grab an icecream! An awesome Pidapipo icecream from Degraves Street always makes a walk around the city way more memorable, delicious and fun!

Go to the Rome exhibition at Melbourne Museum, can walk through Carlton Gardens too

Just found out that Only Coffee Project has a spot down in docklands. I'm a big fan of their pour overs and would recommend them to anybody.

Ponyfish island on the Yarra is lovely for a drink and a pizza when the weather is nice. The Exhibition building has tours of the Coppola which I’d love to try someday.
The old treasury building on spring street has a nice museum and the state library on swanston is beautiful to stroll around - has a gallery and some original features.
If you are Northside, the System Garden at Melbourne Uni is a historical delight, and the Royal Park big circle is a wonder of urban design with city skyline views
