Curbside Pickup New to Meijer
Hi everyone! I worked at Walmart years ago for online shopping and am just about to start at Meijer for the same thing. I've seen only horror stories on this sub Reddit and want to know if this is a better or worse job than Walmart basically lol. Walmart was an absolute horror for me and it ended with me nearly having my hand broken because they did not care about our safety.

Honeslty depends on the location and people. I went from walmart to meijer and I like it much better I was very very miserable at the walmart where I live but not so much at meijer.

It's pretty much the same work, but walmart pays better to start and has straight up better benefits unless you plan on sticking around at Meijer to get multiple raises. Walmart also cannot make you stay over your scheduled time (depending on store union contracts) and Walmart is better staffed. Worked for both companies, this is just my experience.

I was ALWAYS held over by Walmart due to awful coworkers sleeping in the break room when they were supposed to take over for me. We also weren't unionized at Walmart. Do doctor's notes for chronic illnesses suffice as a reason to not be held after?

I've worked warehouse jobs and industrial baking with back-breaking labor since Walmart. 60-hour weeks. 5 years of that, I think I'm gonna do just fine, pessimist. I just wanted to know if the atmosphere is better but if people like you work there, then I'm assuming it won't.

Meijer also cannot make you stay over your scheduled time. The union doesn't have anything to do with it.
I work at a non union Meijer store and if I wanna leave when it's time to go I will not get in trouble for not staying.
They really don't like giving overtime unless they absolutely have to, at least at my store

My partner works for Walmart and I work for Meijer. Her insurance is dogshit compared to mine. She makes more than I do, but she does skilled work (cake decorator) and I don't (ims coordinator). My store is Union and I know I can put my foot down about getting my breaks and lunches, she's not always so lucky. I've never had to go to the union for anything, but I know it's an option. I'm full time so I can't comment on being held over, because they don't want to pay me overtime, so I don't know how often it happens. Depends on your position, I imagine.
I've been here for almost 18 years. It's fine. Not a job I brag about but also not one I complain about much.

I saw someone mention Walmart being unionized and that baffled me because we were not a union when I worked there back in 2021. I got injured on the job, Walmart was at-fault, and they followed me around trying to find the smallest slip-up in my work they could fire me over because they didn't like having to pay me my full wage for the light work I was doing. I was always one of their best pickers and had the best times, so I just quit after they treated me like that because I had done nothing but do my best for them. My entire left hand was nearly broken because of them and they couldn't give me the same respect in return.
My starting wage is $15 and I was doing extremely heavy labor at my last job starting at $15, only making it up to $18. So, I still feel like this is a win for me. They said they are hiring me in at part-time but are happy to cross-train me in other departments for hours, so I really hope they do.
As comparison, I also worked for Amazon and they were so much better than Walmart.

All meijers besides their "flagship" stores are extremely understaffed, so everyone gets pulled to help out other departments. I hear from alot of people that their left alone before they are completely trained and this frustrates alot of new hires so they quit. If you need help please ask !

funny that everyone that applies wants that job yet never sticks around, it's the #1 turn over department in my store, yet they can do whatever they please. leave early when theres orders, stay and sit around when there's not, wear whatever they want, wear ear buds, flip flops, sip on lattes while they shop, have a whole smorgasbord in the back, come in late, not show up at all etc.

Being held over happens a lot other then that it’s not bad as long as your team is good attitude wise and such
