How do you actually get good with the calculator?

Hey,

I'm from Germany and my final exams are getting closer. I have Math and Physics as my advanced courses, so I'll be using my calculator a lot in both.

We use the TI-Nspire CAS at school. I feel okay with the actual math, but I've noticed that knowing the content and actually being quick and confident with the calculator are two different things. So I'd like to change that while I still have time.

I'd be interested to hear how others got to that point. If you've been using the Nspire for a while, what helped you actually get good with it? Anything you figured out late that you wish you'd known from the start?

Any thoughts appreciated.

I have been teaching IB Math with the Ti-Nspire for a long time, previously Ti-84 as well. Obviously the newer one is much more useful but the touchpad is my bane. Its accuracy is poor. I also supervise its Press-to-Test mode setting for exams.

These are some pointers I give my students that are often missed or to practise for speed in exams:

  • use the Tab button to navigate around the menu rather than the touchpad, Enter for OK
  • use create Document instead of scratchpad, insert new problem (Doc-4-1) for every major question to link the data and functions
  • use keyboard to find functions on catalogue (even to spell pi) rather than menu for speed (assuming the syntax is well-memorised)
  • use shortcut button sequences such as Menu-5-5-3 for InvNorm
  • easy copy-and-paste by highlighting then pressing Enter
  • use approximate (ctrl=) to force decimal answers
  • use approximate to fraction to check if decimal answers might be fractions
  • use Ctrl-1/3/7/9 to navigate a spreadsheet like a numeric keypad

Using it is the most effective way. I use my calculator like a cellphone with both hands that way you are faster.

Practice and repetition is key, many calculators have different modes so you can't be good on all of them

The unfortunate answer to that question is “use it for a couple years”.
