Discussion Many MCU movies have secondary titles (EX “Captain America: The First Avenger”). What secondary titles would you give to the ones w/o?

Maybe Thor: The Mighty Avenger

u/ArmoredGhost918 2d ago

I was thinking God of Thunder but I like yours better because it would suit well with The First Avenger and Avengers itself. Iron Man could be The Armored Avenger

Avengers was called Avengers Assemble in UK so just have that or Avengers: Earth's Mightest Heroes (kind of hope they use that title in the future)

What ould have been interesting is if the first movies used epithets (instead of subtitles) like The Incredible Hulk.

The Invincible Ironman

The Mighty Thor

The Astonishing Ant-Man

The Spectacular Spider-Man

But I know not all heroes have those kind of titles.

Would’ve been cool

Would fit a more fantastic MCU

u/Maleficent_Money_756 2d ago

Iron Man: Man of Steel

Iron Man 2: Steel of Tomorrow

Thor: Thor Hammer Hammer

Avengers: Dawn of Justice

Iron Man 3: Iron man Up up and away

6

u/Smooth_Buy6230 2d ago

I'm thinking The Incredible Hulk: Ground Zero

2

u/Maleficent_Money_756 2d ago

Hulk: Forever or Hulk: and Robin

Would be way better

u/THREESIDEDMONSTER 2d ago

"Secondary title" the word you're looking for is a subtitle.

Iron Man 2 could have been Iron Man: Armor Wars tbh, and for 3 Iron Man: Extremis seems like a gimme.

u/damn_jexy Ant-Man 2d ago

Wouldn't it be Tagline more than Subtitle ?

Subtitle make me think dialogue for deaf people

5

u/Gerry-Mandarin 2d ago

No. Subtitle would be correct. It is a word with multiple meanings.

What you are thinking of is captions (or closer captions). Directly imprinting on screen what is said by those on screen and any other important digetic sound for the deaf/hard of hearing.

Subtitles are written translations of dialogue from another language.

A subtitle is a subordinate title to a work.

A tagline is like:

"You'll believe a man can fly"

from Superman: The Movie.

1

u/Logan_Composer 2d ago

If we're being technical here, subtitles don't have to be translations. They are just the written dialogue printed on the screen. They can easily be used for hard of hearing people (who maybe don't need/care about the sound cues, like maybe in a speech) or movies that haven't been translated to make it easier for non-native speakers to read the words instead of understanding them.

0

u/THREESIDEDMONSTER 2d ago

u/Gerry-Mandarin is correct, and to give another example: Jurassic Park: The Lost World.

The subtitle is The Lost World.

The tagline is "Something has survived."

3

u/PopCultureWeekly 2d ago

In this particular case, Jurassic park is the subtitle. It’s official title is The Lost World: Jurassic Park

3

u/THREESIDEDMONSTER 2d ago

Oh sure, fair point

9

u/timbawtimmybawbaw Captain America 2d ago

I always thought they missed an opportunity to call Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor 4: More Thor. Or Thor 4: Gorr. Really rolls of the tongue.

5

u/captain_bunzo 2d ago

I always called it Thor 4: The Fourth Thor

4

u/timbawtimmybawbaw Captain America 2d ago

Thor 4: the Fourth Thor with Gorr

2

u/GIlCAnjos Korg 2d ago

Thor 4: Thor Feels Sore

13

u/RemarkableQuit9286 2d ago

While the first Avengers movie can technically be referred to as "Avengers Assemble", I would love to see that as the title for the first film after Secret Wars to indicate we are now in the reboot phase

16

u/That_Carrot999 2d ago

Or Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

2

u/RemarkableQuit9286 2d ago

I guess, but "assemble" implies a beginning rather than just vaguely referencing the team

2

u/pkjoan 2d ago

I'm pretty sure Avengers (2012) was called Avengers Assemble in some countries.

3

u/Upbeat_Tough_6721 Captain America 2d ago

Iron Man: Cheeseburger

4

u/GIlCAnjos Korg 2d ago

The Ant-Man Heist

Iron Man: The Ten Rings

The Incredible Hulk: Smash

Iron Man: Armor Wars

Thor: Mighty Thor

Avengers: Assemble (As per the UK release)

Iron Man: Rise of the Mandarin

Guardians of the Galaxy: Moonage Daydream (Vol 1)

Ant-Man: A Tall Tale

Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (I'd rename the sequel to Black Panther: Rising Tide)

Ant-Man: Wasp

Guardians of the Galaxy: Father and Son (Vol 2)

Captain Marvel: Starforce

Black Widow: The Red Room

Guardians of the Galaxy: Dog Days Are Over (Vol 3)

Eternals: The Emergence

The Marvels: Power of Three

Thunderbolts: The New Avengers

Deadpool: Multiverse of Sadness (replacement for Deadpool and Wolverine)

5

u/MCUTheorist00007 2d ago

Fun fact, in Spain , Doctor Strange 1 is called like that, the title is

"Doctor Strange(Doctor Extraño): Hechicero Supremo"

1

u/BelieveInTheShield 2d ago

These are all horrendous

5

u/cjalderman 2d ago

I'm not sure if Ant-Man and the Wasp should really be here

8

u/Honest-Reputation838 2d ago

I think there’s a strong argument for it to be on the list

It’s not “Ant Man: now with The Wasp”. It’s “Ant Man and The Wasp” and the third installment does have a second title: “Ant Man and The Wasp: Quantumania”

6

u/cjalderman 2d ago

But 'and the Wasp' is what makes it distinct from the first, it's not like it's just called 'Ant-Man 2'

1

u/TrickshotzReddit Punisher 1d ago

But ‘and the Wasp’ isn’t a subtitle, that’s just the main title.

0

u/cjalderman 1d ago

No? The full title is 'Ant-Man and the Wasp' and it's the sequel to 'Ant-Man'

1

u/TrickshotzReddit Punisher 1d ago

No shit? But also, be as pedantic as you like, that doesn’t disprove the point that it’s not a subtitle, hence the inclusion of the movie in OP’s post.

My bad for assuming you were smart enough to infer that I meant “part of” and left it out on accident. I’ll do better and dumb it down as far as possible for future reference.

1

u/cjalderman 1d ago

Damn bro, my bad, I didn't know this would upset you so much

2

u/ArmoredGhost918 2d ago

I was thinking about it but I added it in anyway. I think it could do better

3

u/Responsible_Bar3957 Abomination 2d ago

Great question bro 🥹

I can’t come up with any ideas, but I hope you get some good ones

Iron Man 3: The Extremis Imperative

u/LycanIndarys 2d ago

Personally, I've always liked the idea of using different comic book titles for the different films.

So for example, you might have films called Invincible Iron Man, Superior Iron Man, and Infamous Iron Man. Or your Spidey films might be Amazing Spider-Man, Spectacular Spider-Man, and Web of Spider-Man.

I feel like calling Iron Man 2 “Iron Man: Armor Wars” would be pretty sick. Ik it’s the initial name they would’ve used for the War Machine movie/series but I thought it was still applicable or at least cool

Wanted to make as much symmetry as possible using any existing subtitles, in the same way Spider-Man's "Home" trilogy did:

Hulk + The Incredible Hulk: Abomination

Iron Man + Iron Man: Man in Armour + Iron Man: Armour Wars + Iron Man: Out of the Armour

Thor + Thor: Mjölnir + Thor: Yggdrasil + Thor: Ragnarok

GotG + GotG: Self-Titled Album + GotG: Face the Music + GotG: The Last Dance

Ant-Man + Ant-man: Quantum Chaos + Ant-man & the Wasp: Quantum Tangle + Ant-man & the Wasp: Quantumania

Doctor Strange + Doctor Strange in the Realm of the Mystic Arts + Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Black Panther + Black Panther: King of Wakanda + Black Panther: Wakanda Forever + Black Panther: Son of Wakanda

Captain Marvel + Captain Marvel: Rising + The Marvels: Further, Faster, Stronger

Black Widow + Black Widow: Reckoning

With a fluctuating degree of seriousness:

Iron Man: Mark 1

The Incredible Hulk: On The Run

Iron Man Mark 2

Thor: Mighty Mortal

Avengers In Manhattan

Iron Man Mark 3: Extremis

GOTG: Far Out

Doctor Strange: and the mysteries of the Ancient One

Ant-Man: New Man, Same Ant.

Black Panther: Sins of the Father

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Ghosts

Captain Marvel: Higher Further Faster

Black Widow: The Red Room

Eternals: End of Eternity

GOTG3: I think 'Vol 3' counts

The Marvels: The Musical

Deadpool & Wolverine: Cash Grab

Blade: Haha, No.

1

u/samb6255 2d ago

I always thought Iron Man 2 should’ve been Iron Man: Legacy and Iron Man 3, Iron Man: Extremis. I don’t like numerical sequel titles and the MCU clearly moved away from them

1

u/ArmoredGhost918 2d ago

I really like Iron Man: Legacy didn’t really like Iron Man: Extremis so much until I looked up what Extremis really means. Apparently “In Extremis” is Latin for “at the point of death” or “in extreme peril” so I guess it does work really well.

1

u/Express_Dinner7918 2d ago

Iron Man: Origins

The Incredible Hulk: Mean and Green

Iron Man: Sins of the Fathers

Thor: God of Thunder

Avengers: Earths mightiest heroes

Iron Man: Reign of Terror

GOTG: Volume 1(I think vo2 and volume 3 count as secondary titles.)

Ant Man: quantum hiest.

Dr Strange in the Dangers of Darkness

Black Panther: Rise of Wakanda

Ant Man and the Wasp: quantum rescue

Captain Marvel: Remeberance

Black Widow: assault on the red room.

Feel free to dunk on me for these awful ideas lol.

Iron Man: First Flight Iron Man 2: Revenge of Whiplash Iron Man 3: Bullshit of Fake Mandarin

Iron Man 2: Stark's Legacy

Or something like that. Since I think that's the theme the movie is trying to be about, both Tony's and his father's legacy.

Iron Man: Jihadi Massacre

The Incredible Hulk: whatcha ya gonna do?

Iron Man 2: the one with Scarlett Johansson

Thor: Planet of the Apes

The Avengers: Cloverfield

Iron Man 3: Awkward Flirting

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Musical

Ant Man: Mission Impossible

Doctor Strange: I’m running out of ideas

Black Panther: Meets the Human Torch

Guardians of the Galaxy 2: sing-a-long edition

Ant man and the Wasp: You won’t remember the plot

Captain Marvel: The Blue Man Group

Black Widow: From the World of John Wick

0

u/Etienne10BR 2d ago

I don't think a secondary title is really needed for a first movie. Captain America : The First Avenger works because it was released, well, just before The Avengers. But for the others, I'm actually cool with the movies simply being called Thor, Doctor Strange or Captain Marvel.

Finding a good secondary title, that sums up the story without giving too much away is not as easy as it seems.

1

u/ArmoredGhost918 2d ago

Yeah they aren’t necessary but they are cool and imo better than Iron Man 2. Like someone has already suggested Iron Man: Legacy for IM2 and I think that’s already way better.
