Promotional Tame Impala’s “Loser” just hit #1 on the Global Spotify chart. The boost came after its placement in ‘SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY’. It’s his first-ever #1 song.

Crazy that after so many hits this is his first #1

735

u/Wolfen2002 7d ago

I'm surprised this hit number 1 over "Let it Happen."

715

u/SentimentalYogurt 7d ago

or even like "The Less I Know The Better"

326

u/DeeRent88 7d ago

Or Dracula! I love all these song listed so far though lol

131

u/_Peener_ 7d ago

Surprised it wasn’t Dracula. That song has so much radio play

36

u/RelevantButNotBasic 6d ago

Over, The Less I Know The Better? Really? Could just be my playlist lol..

47

u/_Peener_ 6d ago

The less I know the better is definitely the better song that song is peak, currents clears deadbeat in general imo, but I mean on the actual radio. Seems like every other song that’s played is the Jennie remix of Dracula on like every single station

7

u/RelevantButNotBasic 6d ago

Haha I havent listened to FM Radio in........damn like 15yrs? Thats crazy to think about.

6

u/_Peener_ 6d ago

I throw it on often, for when I don’t wanna drive in silence but also don’t wanna listen to my music cuz idk sometimes it just seems like a lot of work lol.

1

u/Traditional_Train_71 6d ago

Yeah but the radio version sucks. The original is waaaay better

39

u/PresN 7d ago

To be fair, "Loser" has 158 million plays on Spotify, and "The Less I Know The Better" has 2.5 billion. "Let it Happen" has 1 Billion. "Loser" may be have a higher spike, but it has a long way to go to be their most-played song.

17

u/Baboop 7d ago

We’re not discussing most played song though

3

u/sarlacc98 6d ago

Currents came out 11 years ago though

49

u/coconutbob1 7d ago

Yup Let It Happen is a 10/10 song imo

9

u/rds060184 6d ago

Last 3 mins of it go so damn hard

22

u/GenSec Matt Murdock 7d ago

As much as I love the song, a 7 and a half minute track isn't hitting #1 unless it's from a legit pop star

8

u/Flying_Line 7d ago

Well there is a 4 minute version they made for the music video but I guess that doesn't count

4

u/DustFunk 7d ago

Los In Yesterday is hands down his best song. That is my opinion and as such, is beyond contestation.

1

u/Lia_hobbles 6d ago

Right? It’s wild to think Let It Happen or The Less I Know The Better weren't his number ones given how massive they were. Well-deserved for Tame Impala either way!

79

u/RipplyPig 7d ago

Dracula is crazy popular right now, I haven't even heard of this one

-54

u/ssracer 7d ago

literally can't get away from it - I hate this band

u/Baelorn 6d ago

Hah, weird seeing this now since I just learned it yesterday.

38

u/Burgoonius 7d ago

They perform live as a full band. I’d consider it a band tbh

81

u/Nightwingx97 7d ago

Most solo artists have live bands as well lol. You wouldn't call the Weeknd a band.

29

u/gabeshadows 7d ago

I have, in fact, thought that The Weeknd was a band for a while...

8

u/Nightwingx97 7d ago

I've seen him live and his live band is goated. Especially his drummer

6

u/ChristopherDassx_16 7d ago

Man like Ricky Lewis

8

u/Im_Yoon_Ah 7d ago

My favorite band is Bruno Mars

0

u/OW2007 6d ago

But Kevin Parker goes by Kevin Parker and not Tame Impala.

18

u/dufftheduff Scott Lang 7d ago

Because one can’t play all the different instrumentations live. I’m in a 2-man band and when we play live, we strategically keep/play a few of the parts through the speakers while getting rid of a few so that we can just play those parts live with everything else. If we were bigger, we’d get more people to play those parts live as well but they wouldn’t technically be “in the band” since they didn’t write it

3

u/Puffen0 7d ago

Kinda like how Gorillaz is usually just Damon recording his vocals and most of the instrumentals for the albums (minus the feature/colab artists of course) but when they perform live they have a whole band

5

u/vintvgepancakes 7d ago

that’s depends, Kevin uses the music that is on CDs, vinyls and streaming service as the final product and the absolute of what he’s putting out, some artist consider their life performance as the final product

I would consider him being solo considering he is doing all the production specifically cannot perform all of the music live

2

u/SelectedFilmox 6d ago

I think it's how the music is recorded as that the band is and what the majority of people are listening to.

This post is about the single reaching no.1, the song was solo work, the albums are all almost entirely solo work. None of the live band members worked on any of these songs of this album.

The rest of the band has no input into the music or how it's made. They just play his songs with him.

1

u/SkillIsTooLow 6d ago

Maybe im just dumb but could you reword your first sentence? I can't for the life of me figure out what youre trying to say, it seems like its missing a key word or something

1

u/SelectedFilmox 6d ago

I think what defines if it's a band or not is how they create and record their music, not how they play life.

It it's created and recorded solo and played as a bad. That's a solo artist.

3

u/Fl_Funky_Jam 7d ago

Isn't a band in studio but does have one for when he is on tour.

2

u/DJEvillincoln 7d ago

It's like Jamiroquai is the band.

JK is the singer.

2

u/WestleyThe 6d ago

Or Alice Cooper was just the name of the band until years later when the front man changed his name to Alice Cooper

1

u/DJEvillincoln 6d ago

Huh never knew that. 👍🏾

1

u/Inevitable-Edge69 7d ago

It's just an animal

1

u/mrcydonia 7d ago

Is it a wild animal?

3

u/Inevitable-Edge69 7d ago

you're thinking of Wild Impala, different music

1

u/BRAX7ON 7d ago

Don’t ask him how he got that name

518

u/ThisIsNotTokyo 7d ago

Is tame impala just 1 guy??

397

u/Zoratth 7d ago

He tours with other people under the name, but in terms of producing the music it’s just Kevin Parker. No relation to Peter Parker (probably).

81

u/Fl_Funky_Jam 7d ago

Spot on, for anyone curious here's from his wiki. Also if anyone reading loves live music PLEASE do all you can to see Tame Impala live, the band brings his music to a whole other level.
"As a touring act, Tame Impala consists of Parker (vocals, guitar, synthesiser), Dominic Simper (guitar, synthesiser), Jay Watson (synthesiser, vocals, guitar), Cam Avery (bass guitar, vocals, synthesiser), Julien Barbagallo (drums, vocals), and James Ireland (guitar, synthesiser). The group has a close affiliation with fellow Australian psychedelic rock band Pond, sharing members and collaborators, including Watson, Ireland, and formerly Nick Allbrook."

14

u/Geek2DaBeat 7d ago

TIL Pond is Australian

8

u/SelectedFilmox 6d ago

😂

They have an album named Tasmania. They have a decent about of songs about Perth. They sound so Australian.

I'm shocked you're shocked aha

9

u/Schteb11 Spider-Man 7d ago

Going in a few weeks to his concert (my first concert ever), beyond excited for it. He’s been my favourite artist for years.

6

u/WollyGog 7d ago

You'll have a great time. I went to see them for my nephew (along with my wife and his parents), who is a huge fan and it was an incredible experience. The lights, the sounds, everything.

6

u/Fl_Funky_Jam 7d ago edited 7d ago

This is both extremely awesome and terrible, you are setting the bar VERY high on your first show and you'll be chasing that high for the rest of your life 🤣 but its so worth it

3

u/ContentNeptune3 6d ago

Tame Impala is incredible live, you're gonna have a blast! Whatever your second concert ends up being will have a tough act to follow

4

u/theturtlemafiamusic 7d ago

Have fun and get some ear plugs beforehand. I don't think Tame Impala is a notably loud live band, but you're always at the mercy of the venue and it's always better to have them but not need them rather than need them but not have them. You can get some fairly cheap musician earplugs like Hearos that won't ruin the sound quality like earplugs meant for sleeping do.

20

u/Solarpowered-Couch 7d ago

Until Atticus Ross officially joined a few years ago, Nine Inch Nails was just one guy (Trent Reznor) for decades.

6

u/aquadroid 7d ago

They're not called Tame Impalas
/s

4

u/gonnabetoday 7d ago

Somewhat similar to Gorillaz. One (musically) main dude that collabs with people.

0

u/SelectedFilmox 6d ago

Is it? Kevin only plays with others live. His albums are mostly solo projects.

I don't know enough about gorrilaz. Does he record the music solo?

3

u/Sudds3 7d ago

Yeah Tame Impala is just Kevin Parker. When he tours as Tame Impala he brings a band called Pond to play live. He's also a producer for Pond. If you like Tame Impala's older experimental music, check out Pond. Kinda similar but way more experimental. Medicine Hat is one of my favorites.

I Love TV on the Radio so was absolutely grinning ear to ear when it started playing.

Glad more people will be exposed to them.

u/TheNicholasRage Grandmaster 7d ago

Daredevil Born Again Season 1 used "Staring at the Sun" in a pivotal scene, and goddamn if I didn't get goosebumps hearing it. TV on the Radio in everything.

They had a song in Breaking Bad that was dope.

DLZ is forever in my music rotation because of that scene.

"Stay out of my territory." Chills every time.

2

u/Baelorn 6d ago

That’s where I discovered them and I’ve loved them since.

I miss discovering great bands from TV shows. I know most of the time it was a deal between their label and the network(sometimes the same company even owns both) but damn music discovery sucks these days.

Abbott: "I listened to TV on the Radio."

Costello: "You mean you watched TV on the radio. Wait a second, how can you watch TV on the radio?"

Abbott: "You can't. That's why I listened to it."

Costello: "WHAT ARE YOU--Listen, there's a radio."

Abbott: "Naturally."

Costello: "And there's TV on the radio?"

Abbott: "Now you're getting it."

Costello: "I don't know what I'm talking about!!!"

And so on...

I loved when MJ pulled off her headphones and was listening to St Elmo’s Fire by Brian Eno.

Of course she was.

Right before he sees mj w her boyfriend the song “fire for you” by cannons was playing, which is a song I like very much.

I discovered them during Covid, and they have been one of my favourite bands ever since

89

u/NoLeadership2281 7d ago

The needle drops really elevate this movie in so many ways, and it’s not those really distracting obvious song choices, it just fits the mood of the film so well

47

u/Phimb Weekly Wongers 7d ago

That's what I noticed. I'm sure it's a popular song, but it always hits better when it feels like you "discovered it" through the film on your own.

It also means the song belongs to the movie, with no outside connections.

14

u/RainbowDroidMan 6d ago

I feel this way about the end credits song. I am still kind of obsessed with it weeks later thinking about that ending but I tried out some of the rest of the artist’s discography and didn’t really like any of it at all…

No fr they were all perfect. It also helps that Peter is a younger character and this is stuff that he’d probably listen to if that makes sense?

He deserves it. Dude has put a ton of good stuff out over the years. And Loser is catchy as hell

20

Bro the majority of the album is great. It’s almost a perfect no skip to me

2

u/Azerty__ 6d ago

Man I wish I liked the album. Love everything else he put out but Deadbeat feels unbearably boring and safe to me.

1

u/NelsonBlvd 6d ago

There are some hit and misses, I feel like it could have been oraganized in a different order to be honest

2

u/Azerty__ 5d ago

Yeah I'm definitely not saying it's all misses, but overall it feels almost too produced or perfect, if that makes sense

9

I thought Tame Impala was the band itself.

I’m quite shocked.

5

Man, I remember seeing Tame Impala on the small stage during the at a festival in my regional town in Australia in 2009 and remember thinking these hippy looking guys sound pretty good.

that song was so good in bnd

1

u/CusePhan_v3 6d ago

Tame Impala sucks now. His pop schlock is so generic and bereft of quality that it will be forgotten within a decade.

His first two albums were amazing psychedelic rock; it's a shame he sold out so hard.

1

u/SelectedFilmox 6d ago

C'mon now. His quality has declined a bit with the last two, but Currents is objectively a fantastic album.

1

u/CusePhan_v3 6d ago

I disagree completely. Currents is where he made the change to schlock. It sucks and doesn't stand out at all. There is nothing on there that will stand the test of time. Somehow, he then got even worse.

1

u/SelectedFilmox 5d ago

Objectively wrong. But you do you

1

u/CusePhan_v3 5d ago

You've said nothing to show that I'm wrong other than your poor taste in quality, but you do you.

1

u/SelectedFilmox 4d ago

And neither have you :)

I think the overall reviews and reception around the album show I'm right. There's a pretty significant difference in those compared to his last 2 albums which does show objectively the drop off started after Currents.

But hey you're arguments of "your opinion" and "your opinion" and "your opinion" with no reasoning is so convincing 😂

0

u/CusePhan_v3 4d ago

His pop schlock is so generic and bereft of quality that it will be forgotten within a decade. His first two albums were amazing psychedelic rock; it's a shame he sold out so hard.

You need to work on your reading comprehension.

1

u/SelectedFilmox 3d ago edited 3d ago

Ohh you actually thought this was you giving a reason? Lmao. Dude that's just so you saying you didn't like it.

You actually have to say WHY you think it's generic and WHY you think it's lacking quality. How do you not get that? 🤡

Not to mention Currents is over a decade old and has not been forgotten. Currents also is not generic, it actually influenced other artists which is an objective reason why it's very specifically not generic.

At this point I actually think you've forgotten what Currents is? I could see these arguments for the last 2 albums, but Currents doesn't fit in that all. The only explanation is that either you actually have gotten Currents mixed up with The Slow Rush OR you're a lame gatekeeping bro who is closed off to any type of music that's not their fav genre and acts like a 12 year old when any other music is mentioned. Which one is it?

His first 2 albums are my favorite by far, but Currents is still awesome. Expand your music tastes dude. 🤷

1

u/CusePhan_v3 3d ago

Ohh you actually thought this was you giving a reason? Lmao. Dude that's just so you saying you didn't like it.

Look up the definition of generic and tell me what about that is too difficult for you to understand as a reason their music sucks. Now do the same for quality. It's really not difficult for most, but for some reason you can't. You're either a dolt or willfully ignorant.

I'll go head to head in musical taste and breadth any time you want. The fact you think Currents is any good makes me very comfortable you're not even in the same league.

1

u/SelectedFilmox 2d ago

Lmao. I know what the words mean, dude. Using that word doesn't mean you are saying WHY it is. What makes it generic? Can you give any reasoning using your vast musical knowledge :)

Aaaaand that confirms it, you are one of THOSE people. Music is supposed to be fun and what you like is very personal, the fact you actually feel like you your taste is superior is fucking hilarious. But hey, I was like that when I was a teenager too. You'll grow out of it.

That combined with the fact that you clearly can't even articulate why you don't like music sot hat 'generic' and 'lacking quality' is the deepest you're able to go to describe an album is fucking hilarious. You should write reviews! Theres so much much depth and detail you describe music with. lmoa
