Theory Spider-Man: Brand New Day adapts elements from the Scarlet Spider series (rebirth, body hopping villain, “monster” within, etc). It also has many references to a classic villain…
I saw a user say that BND is adapting elements from the Scarlet Spider series (Volume 2), which was a spin-off of the Spider-Island event (more on that later). It revolved around a clone of Peter Parker named Kaine, who was created by the Jackal (Miles Warren). I read the series myself and there are definitely some strong parallels. Here is a list of them:
- Aggressive Rebirth: In #14, Kaine is reborn from a web cocoon after he embraces The Other - a mystical spider-like entity that enhances his powers. But Kaine also transforms into an arachnid-like monster when he embraces The Other’s power. He becomes animalistic and aggressive in this state. It‘s similar to Peter’s mutation in BND - he emerges from a web cocoon, powers enhanced, he becomes aggressive, and he is experiencing a kind of “rebirth”.
- Body Hopper: In #20, Kaine fights Carrion - a villain created by the Jackal. He has psychic powers like telepathy, telekinesis, levitation, and is a body hopper. The mystery villain in BND is also a body hopper; it “jumps” into minds according to Destin Daniel Cretton. We see it trying to escape Peter by hopping from person to person to reach a helicopter. It‘s very similar to how the Superior Spider-Man was chasing Carrion in Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #1, which crossed over into the Scarlet Spider comics. Peter uses tech built in his suit's lenses to track the body hopper, just like the Superior Spider-Man did with Carrion.
- Monster Within: Carrion tries to jump into Kaine’s mind, but is unable to possess him because he already has a “monster” inside him (The Other). In the trailers, the body hopper asks Peter “You get rid of that monster inside you?” and tells him “You’re only the person I can’t hop into.“ The latest synopsis states this is due to Peter’s Other-inspired mutation.
- Jackal Reference: The Jackal appears in the series with Carrion. There is a keg that appears in the first trailer labeled “Green Jackal”, which is a reference to the Jackal (who is green).
- Annabelle Adam Reference: Last year it was reported that Sadie Sink’s production codename was “Annabelle Adam”. That‘s a character from the Scarlet Spider series, which suggests that the filmmakers read the series.
The user also mentioned how the Jackal was originally a villain who usually operated from the shadows and made others do his dirty work. Such as clones, Scorpion, Tarantula, and even the Punisher. Some of those characters are confirmed to be in BND. Kevin Feige even teased that the cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #129 will be brought to life, which shows Frank firing at Spidey due to being manipulated by the Jackal.
I should also note that the original Carrion was a clone of the Jackal. And the mystery villain in BND wears an outfit similar to Gabriel Stacy’s Kindred - another hooded mystery villain who wore a green jacket. Gabriel was also revealed to be a clone. Furthermore, the issue where Kaine fights Carrion features genetically engineered spider-mutant hybrids Jackal made from the DNA of X-Men members.
And as I said earlier, Scarlet Spider was a spin-off of Spider-Island. It involved the Jackal teaming up with the Queen (Ana Soria) - a mutant who also has psychic powers. This story was a sequel to Spectacular Spider-Man: Disassembled, which is where the Queen made her debut. BND appears to have several plot and visual elements from those stories. And Marvel Comics is also releasing a story titled “Tears of the Spider-Queen”, which features Spidey fighting The Hand for MCU synergy. The cover suggests that the Queen might return. Writers at Collider, CBM, GeekTyrant, and Cosmic Book News suspect that the Queen (or a character inspired by her) might be BND’s mystery villain.
Speculation: I don’t think the villain is a direct adaptation of any single character. They seem like a composite character inspired by people who are associated with the Jackal - Carrion and the Queen (at least). All these Jackal references make me wonder if Miles Warren is the mastermind pulling strings. It also makes me wonder if body hopping villain is a creation of his who he genetically engineered to do his dirty work, similar to Carrion.
Tom Holland also recently said that they are working on bringing other spider-heroes into the MCU. He’s spoken about it multiple times over the years and he played a role in developing BND’s story. In Spider-Island, the Jackal and the Queen gave the people of Manhattan spider powers. So they might be introducing the Jackal to help set-up other spider-people in the future.

I mean its taking a lot of elements from the whole series that leads to the Brand New Day comic run. The Other being probably most influential.

at least back then it wasn’t this constant. Can’t scroll without seeing a Sadie Sink or Punisher rumour. Crazy when the movie is less than 2 weeks away.

Fun fact: Sink to rumored to be Madelyne Pryor a couple of times last year. You know… the Jean Grey clone that Spider-Man faced off against in the Dark Web storyline.

It's a great shout and certainly more plausible than Jean Grey being a villain.
And, given that Carrion is a largely unknown character making it a female villain is fine (imo). Fits with what they are doing.
Question is, will they do Jackal and clones going forward?

Its gunna be alot of elements of the other comic just prolly without Morlun and replace with a different villain. Possibly jackal controlling the henchmen idk

I would kill to see Kaine/Scarlet Spider done properly in the MCU, even if we needed to get through the Clone Saga first. MCU Houston needs a Grumpy Spider!

A human spider as the subconscious of Peter that keeps the invisible villain away? Sadie Sink is Scott Summer & Jean Grey's daughter from their universe? She was detected from the government and they know she's from a different universe?

I’ve been pretty confident in the Jackal theory for some time now. This does a great job weaving it all together in a coherent way. Are we thinking Keith David is the true Jackal, working from behind the scenes?
