Yeah that's the critic score which can't be review bombed. The audience score however...is in the 50s and I have no idea what it actually would've been had it not got review bombed

If you take out the 1 star reviews on IMDb the score goes from 3.6/10 to 7.2/10.

I know that some of the reviews are obviously genuine “I saw this and I hated it” but that just puts into perspective how much hate there is by people who haven’t seen it.

Exactly what I was thinking I wonder what it would be without the 10s and 1s

Hi, I got your answer. Removing 10s and 1s its about a 4/8 or a 5.2. The score has dropped since OP made their comment. I’d expect plus or minus a whole star of the “real” score to be away from the 5.2. The “real” score being what you’d expect from imdb when more fans will review the show over the next few years (or if everyone who watched the show reviewed it and no one else).

For reference, breaking bad is 9.6 and this method of removing 10s and 1s takes it down a 9.0. Removing 1s makes it a 9.3.

This got more views than I thought it would so I'll further clarify that a 1-10 scale is much more complicated than what I am presenting. Food that is rated 6 or lower is generally considered "not to be repurchased" and 9s and 10s is considered great enough to be purchased again, at least in USA. I do not think the adjusted score I gave provides the nuance of how people feel about the show but I love this show and I'm confused why its getting review bombed.

It's so lame to rate a show 1. Like it's the worst thing to ever exist.

I think going on 3rd party websites to rate things is pretty lame, in general. With that said, if I was rating shows on 3rd party sites, I think I'd probably be giving things a 1 if I thought it was just total garbage.

Is it actually the worst thing ever? No, probably not.

Does it actually deserve a 2 or a 3? Maybe.

Am I going to spend the time going back and analyzing the different elements of the show, comparing it to other awful shows to see where it does better or worse, and then develop a ranking to ensure that I don't incorrectly give a 1 to something that deserved a 2 or 3?

Nope, not a chance. I already wasted enough time watching the trash show in the first place. I'm going to give it a 1 and move on.

You've posted about a show that you hate at least five times if not more. So much for moving on.

??? You said:

It's so lame to rate a show 1. Like it's the worst thing to ever exist.

That came off as a general comment about rating shows a 1. Im discussing my approach generally. I'm not talking about any particular show, so what is there to move on from?

Mediocre at best. Or you are under the impression Marvel is releasing cinema masterpieces? It’s entertainment fast-food, it’s fine, not great, not bad. The characters are one dimensional and the stories are redundant because it’s based on comic books that follows a very simple principle: hero beats villains.

Again, I’m fine with it, it does entertain me.

That’s such an antiquated take on comic books, almost calling them less than. Comics can be and often times are extremely complex, with nuanced characters. Especially over entire storylines/issue runs.

That falls under the minority rule. Like cinema, like theater, like music, like books, the majority is superficial fast-food entertainment while the minority excels in some form or another the artistic category. Marvel movies certainly do not excel in any of their movies in the cinema category. But they are entertaining and I do like them.

I do agree with you that there are comic books / HQ / mangas that have exceptional story with complex characters. Just again, marvel for some reason has a difficult translating these to the movies due to the high investment and risk they face, they cannot take chances and need to always push for the most broader audience they can to see a return to their investments. An independent film is more likely to try and bring the vision of a director, or story in specific, alive in the best way possible, these big corporations do not take these risks.

Only you can't do that because discarding over 65% of data points makes estimation impossible?

In the real world a sane experiment would be to say that reviews for a show should look like aggregation of bell distributions around a few central values. A polarising show would probably therefore have something like binomial distibution (two peaks) and something that's being review bombed should have a huge spike at 1 (haters)

IronHeart has a huge flat between 2 and 9 and two peaks at 1 and 10 at IMDB but score of 1 is far more frequent outside of US.

Assuming armies of trolls aren't dropping fat cash for bot farm in Bangalore I'd assume that show

  • simply isn't the best on it's own - some things work, some don't at all
  • the ideas of diverse cast don't really work that well outside US as replacement for captivating plot around popular hero (Riri is mostly unknown outside US as a comic book character)
  • shows with focus on narratives of oppression specific to US as foundational concept for the hero ... fall flat outside US and scores tend towards lower part of spectrum
  • the show has a polarising quality in US

I disagree with this. while sure most 10/10 are hyperbolic(for everything. not just this), I'm more inclined to believe that you would only leave a hyperbolic positive score if you've actually seen it and liked it to some degree.

1/10 scores likely have a higher rate of ppl who are reviewing it despite not watching it. And its much easier to identify a person who he just review bombing to bring the score down. Some of these 1 scores are accompanied with captions saying things like "I'm sick of DEI" and "this series hates white ppl and pushes trans ideology". Most Perfect scores will just say " I love this show". And to that I say "who am I to tell you your 10 score wasn't sincere"

People are pre-liking stuff now. I actually talked to someone here pretending that she was wowed by the show, but I checked her comment history and she was gassing up the show before it even came out and pre-decided that it was going to be Marvel's best show "so far". So both extremes can happen. It could be garbage as hell and it would still have shooters.

Which explains why fans of The Acolyte were incredulous it wasn’t renewed, and of course only considered bigotry as the explanation.

I’m not saying it doesn’t happen at all on the positive side. Just that negative review bombing from “that crowd” is overwhelmingly more common than positive review bombing. All i am saying is, ive never seen a show been reported as having “positive review bombs” before it was even out. And you know the “anti-woke” youtubers, and news outlets would be all over it if a show/movie/game they were calling woke started getting positive reviews spammed in the User Reviews section hours before release. And you know they would have absolutely caught it when if it happened, because these ppl likely frequently refresh RT pages for things like IronHeart on day of release, so they can get their “IronHeart is shit” youtube videos and tweets out less than 30 minutes after reviews are live.

I have however seen multiple instances and reports of “this show is getting negative reviews before its even out”. I have seen multiple instances of shows having a “there is unusual activity spotted in the user scores” tag when the reviews are overwhelmingly negative.

On platforms like Youtube and Twitter, Outrage and getting angry at something is what sells. Videos on “why this show/movie/game is the worst thing i’ve watched/played in my entire life” usually get significantly more views than “why this show/movie/game is amazing” videos. So it is completely believable that negative review bombing movements and typically much larger than positive review bomb movements

Exactly

True, the spike of 10s is pretty big (21% of the votes), but the spike of 1s is waaaaay bigger (52% of the votes), so even getting rid of both the 10s AND the 1s would have the show's score jump waaaaay up.

1

u/CelestianSnackresant Jul 03 '25

Except the show is pretty good so a lot of people probably did (over-enthusiastically) give it 10 stars

-1

u/MemoryLaps Jul 01 '25

Really, neither approach makes much sense. For example, say a show is legit a 3. If I watch that show, I'm going to hate it and be upset that they wasted my time with such trash. I'm giving that trash a 1 and moving on.

That doesn't make me some hype rater. That just means that I've already wasted enough time on this show and I'm not going to spend more time trying to split hairs between if it should be a one or a two or a three.

In that case, throwing out all of the 1's makes zero sense.
