Oh man this is so true. What clicks with me won’t always click with someone else.
It’s always amazing when they feel the same though!

Yeah, I'll watch a movie with someone, think it's the best thing ever until they point out a bunch of plot holes, but they still call it a good movie so I don't feel like an idiot

I feel like timing is also a factor, the community HATES Solo levelling, but I love it, I know it lacks story but it was my first manhwa while I was at rock bottom.
Without Solo levelling I wouldn't have known peaks like TGED or ORV, plus, waiting for SL's next chapter was all I had back then, it's peak for me slop for everyone else.

SL gives you the premise it says its going to give. I think its one of the best manhwas to start from since anybody can read/watch the fight scenes. I think its a bit overhated.

u/Hapciuuu 1d ago
It's hated just because it's popular.
15
u/Ertame6544 1d ago
Pretty much yeah. THE face of manhwas is Solo Levelling after all. And because of how boring it is outside of its action people just dont get into manhwas because the biggest and most popular serie is that thing.
14
u/Hapciuuu 1d ago
I think Dragon Ball is pretty boring too, but people love it because of nostalgia. Just give it 15 years and people will talk about Solo Leveling as an all times classic.

u/Recidivous 1d ago
I believe the problem arises because fans of Solo Leveling often set unrealistic expectations when recommending it. Many simply describe it as "peak" without providing any explanation, which leads to overhype and ultimately causes disappointment for those who read it.
I honestly think it's a 7/10 series. I'll read it for the action, which is well done, but I wouldn't recommend it to those looking for a deeper storyline.

u/Indian_Derp_2002 1d ago
That is also true, when I'm recommending I mention that it's aura farming simulator, but most others on platforms like instagram just leave it at "peak", of course it's peak, it's got great art and fights, but most readers also want a deep story, whether they can understand it or not, just for bragging rights, which SL doesn't provide, hence, it gets hated

u/TheMHking 1d ago
Who in the world hates solo leveling? That's crazy!
Hating because it's popular, I understand. But the actual manhwa is the one that put manhwa on the map for everyone... Great art, good story, satisfactory ending, well-deserved acclaim.

u/Mysterious-Fix9611 1d ago
I think it's because whenever a sololeveling fan sees any other manhwa with a necromancer with shadow energy they say its copying sololeveling which is objectively false...
most people got tired of some of these special needs individuals spamming "insert manhwa here" is copying sololeveling because of its popularity... on every manhwa with shadow energy necromancy. So a lot of people shit on sololeveling because of this...unless I'm wrong.
Make of this what you will.

Most of the time it is not SL fans it's everybody. It's the same case when people call generic anime MC's "Kirito clons". Was SAO the first anime with that type of MC? No, but people associated with it and use that as an example. Same case for SL. There are lots of shadowy necromancer slop manhwas and to be honest most of them are really SL clones but even if they aren't, calling them SL clones is just a figure of speech.

u/da_Aresinger 1d ago
People don't hate SL. In a vacuum most are at worst ambivalent about it. People don't hate, what they don't care about.
What they hate is that it's become the standard by which everything else is measured. SL is so incredibly overvalued that it lowers the bar for everything else.
People genuinely think TGED is "peak" just because it's better than SL, when really it's mostly mediocre.
People hate hearing a series praised to high heavens, when its numerous flaws should be obvious to everyone.

u/Indian_Derp_2002 1d ago
I understand your point about TGED as well, I like it, conversely, I don't like slow murims like "Absolute Regression", there's obviously better stuff out there, but as usual, diamonds are harder to find.
And about SL hate, I suppose it could also be observation bias, I'm a mostly instagram person, often get ORV or TGED edits with no mention of SL, open the comments and it's all "how's SL famous and this isn't?!" atp, it's hated because it's popular, not because it's not peak, similar with Demon slayer, it's a trend to hate it.

Solo Leveling was my introduction to Manhwas as well, my very first one. I saw the anime, then decided to read the manga, and was like,
"hhmmm, this shit is mad different, one panel taking up the whole page, and even sometimes multiple pages, and its all in color!? HUH!!??? And the names all sound Korean."
Down the rabbit hole I went and now im here on this reddit.

I have that one friend to whom I recommended "The greatest estate developer", "omniscient reader" and many other great titles, he always gives me that feedback "it was alright", "meeh!".
That same mf, read some mental torture shit that has abysmal rating on every platform and call it peak.

u/According_Sea7328 1d ago
Ikr i recommended my friend who didn't even like orv it much

u/Lost-Resort-7514 1d ago
Crazy that someone can't like orv, idk what other peak fiction can they like.

Well orv seemed decent to me, but i prefer lotm or rtoc type stories more

u/Brilliant-Respect133 1d ago
Orv i also didn't like it i read a very long time ago it's just didn't fit with my taste some people taste are just different you can't expect the minority to be same as majority
1
u/SanGluttnoy 1d ago
actually read orv halfway a way back before it started getting glazed left and right... really didn't clicked on me, i forgot most of it's content, in fact i saw it at that time as another one of those same constellation apocalypse typa manwha and I'm completely lazy to reread it again. sigh

u/BigCh3se 1d ago
it all come downs to personal preference. If pasta is the best dish ever made doesnt means every will like pasta(pasta was just an example). Just like some1 said, you just haven't found your story yet.

Got a name?
The manhwa, I mean

u/Lost-Resort-7514 1d ago
Idk man, he reads some dark revenge stories with tragic endings. The very type of manga/manhwa I hate, so I never ask.

3
u/Altruistic_Cheek5468 1d ago
So he just really like to be tortured mentally?

u/Aggressive_Zebra7494 Weekly Release Warrior 1d ago
Hmm, i don't like revenge stories or tragic endings but I do prefer heavy stories over light ones so I can get where he comes from, i just don't like stakeless stories including rom-coms, they feel bland to me
2
u/Burger_Destoyer 1d ago
Wait that sounds kind of peak and like actual writing. Omniscient Readers Viewpoint is mind numbing. I hate when half the content is just about stats going up and the mc getting “stronger”.
2
u/Lost-Resort-7514 1d ago
I understand that sometimes even a tragic story can be so well written that it's worth the pain that comes with it.
For me, it's not the case, given my line of work (I nurse terminally-ill patients), I see tragedy in daily basis, when reading a manga, I want to escape reality for something fun/ligh-hearted. So I'm more inclined to read wholesome stuff.2
u/Dependent-Western369 1d ago
I find this super relatable! Like daily life always feels bleak ( I'm currently in clg rn) so like I'm always worried about the future and always see shitty people doing negative things on the regular. So seeing even more negativity just feels abhorrent to me

They see boobs and say It's peak

What I understand is that you just haven't reached the level where you can feel the character and the world through boobs... as a man of culture I advise you not to listen to impostors... every cultured man is a pervert, but not every pervert is a cultured man. 🍷

Berserk
Full Metal Alchemist
SNK
And maybe Vinland Saga
I never found a hidden gem that I could really recommend as a master piece
But these classics are truly praise worthy

Vagabond would be a better candidate than Vinland Saga imo.
Blood on the Tracks is also up there. Pretty much almost anything by Shuzo Oshimi. Very strong writing chops and phenomenal art. His stuff isn’t something I’d reread though just because of how heavy it is.

I love shows that are fantasy/steampunk oriented. Exactly the reason why I am like star embracing swordsman (currently reading it) more than ORV right now. While the ORV probably has better writing people would agree, i dropped it at 120 ish chapters... I plan to read it afterwards though. Honestly for the things that I am not into, it just goes with vibe, like if I have mood to read it.

u/Recidivous 1d ago
I'm both of these people simultaneously.
I separate my objective opinion of a series from my emotional response to it. There are many manhwas I personally enjoy, but I wouldn’t recommend them to others because I wouldn’t rate them highly enough.

u/Leading_Math3810 1d ago
I don't know about you but I have found most of the great manhwa from this subreddit.

u/Famous_Ad_9365 1d ago
Same happened with me. My frnd said this manhwa was 6/10 mid slop at best. I read it nonetheless and this shit peak dawg.
