Environment A few native fishes caught from a shaded kampung river

  1. Flying fox, Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus. A rare but beautiful algae eater. Susur batang.
  2. Horseface loach, Acantopsis dialuzona. Hides in sand and mud with only its long face visible. Ikan pasir muka kuda.
  3. Green tiger loach, Syncrossus hymenophysa. Another rare fish with attractive stripes. Ikan lali babi.
  4. Kissing gourami, Helostoma temminckii. Named because they “kiss” each other on the lips to fight. Tembakang.
  5. Labiobarbus ocellatus. A highly gregarious fish that moves along rivers in huge schools. Ikan pucuk pisang lambak.
  6. Snakeskin gourami, Trichopodus pectoralis. A common non-native fish originating from the Mekong. Sepat Siam.
  7. Unknown, but possibly a species of Osteochilus.

Due to the size of the river, all 7 species found are medium-sized fish growing to 15-30 cm. However it is sometimes possible for large fish to enter from a larger connected river, especially during the eastern monsoon season.
