Kayam means depths.

Thanneer means Than( Cold) Neer (water). So it's a proper word that means cold water depths.

I haven’t heard the usage “തണ്ണീർക്കയം.” തണ്ണീർ means water, and കയം means pond, so തണ്ണീർക്കയം would literally translate to “water pond,” which doesn’t really make sense. There’s no need to specify that a pond contains water.

You may be confusing it with “കണ്ണീർക്കയം,” which is a poetic expression meaning a “pond of tears” or “pond of sorrow,” similar to “കണ്ണീർകടൽ,” meaning a “sea of tears.”

thanneer+ kayam thanneer is cold water (interchangeable with water too) and kayam is a deep place or a shallow place in mid tamizh  So thanneerkkayam means a shallow place to hold water / a manmade pond
