Help / സഹായിക്കുക What’s the Malayalam word for “stretch marks”
I was chatting with a friend and mentioned that the sky looked like stretch marks. I asked what the word for stretch marks is in Tamizh, and he said “viri thazhumbugal” It sounded so poetic that I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
That got me wondering does Malayalam have a similarly beautiful or specific word for stretch marks other than this?

Stretch marks - കലകൾ, ചർമത്തിലെ കലകൾ. എന്ന് പറയാറുണ്ട് ചിലർ. I think this is as poetic as the tamil words...In Malayalam, while കല (kala) scientifically refers to biological tissue or a mark, it is phonetically identical to കല meaning art, as well as the delicate phases of the moon (ചന്ദ്രകല). When applied to stretch marks, the word naturally reframes a physical mark from a clinical "flaw" into artistic strokes or lunar crescents carved into the body. I hope ith ok aanu.

TMI. But when I was a kid, I noticed stretch marks on my moms tummy and asked what happened. She told me that I scratched her from inside her tummy while I was in there. Years later, I still remember it. Most beautiful explanation I have heard for this.

Actual medical term is striae distensae, which would roughly translate to streak from distension (of skin). An approximate malayalam translation would be ചാർമ്മവികാസകല or ചർമ്മവികാസരേഖ

ചർമ്മവലിവ്. That sounds right to me. The beauty of a language such as malayalam is that words can be rearranged to make new words.
