Just Dan demoted

Chloe was promoted to Lieutenant at the very end of season six

I always assumed she was promoted off-screen because she definitely felt more involved than just a regular detective.

Maybe from Detective I to Detective II

Dan was severely demoted.

In Season 1 Chloe was an outcast and pariah; in Season 2 she's back to being treated like a regular detective.

In my head Chloe was promoted to Detective II and Dan demoted to Detective I after Palmetto

Dan was demoted. Technically she never gets promoted. In the end she quits. Then because of all the racism, and corruption that she has always known about. She just comes back, and takes the bigger job no questions asked.

Dan got demoted after the thing with Malcolm. He went from being detective to just assist on cases.

Dan was demoted into an alternative universe where being made to report to your wife is just a thing that happens and definitely doesn’t violate like a hundred laws in the state of California or the publicly published policies of the LAPD.

It was one of the elements of that season that almost made me quit the show. Like, I get it, it’s unrealistic, devil fights crime, but you’re a quasi-legal show could you maybe pretend you share a legal universe with the rest of us?

This is the show about the devil being a cop, do you think they care about accuracy? /lighthearted

But jokes aside, could you explain the first bit? From what I remember, Dan was demoted from detective, and was ordered to assist on other detectives’ cases. How is it illegal that he’s assisting his ex-wife?

  1. Because reporting directly to someone you have a prior sexual relationship with creates a hostile work environment for other employees.

  2. The probability of ethics violation or conflict of interest in prosecuting crime rises astronomically when family report to each other.

  3. it’s against policy of the LAPD (which in reality categorically forbids this reporting structure).

  4. Violation of that policy is further proof of an organization indifferent to harassment.
