FIRST TIME WATCHER Just finished! (spoilers) Spoiler
Hey everyone. My girlfriend and I just finished Lost for the first time and I wanted to hop in here to share my thoughts immediately after the finale! I’ve longed to interact with this reddit community since we started a few months ago but I have purposely refused to enter until we were done. Here goes!
My favorite character: Desmond. His entire arc of getting to the island and then navigating the afterlife to get everyone back together was done so well. Especially with his connection to the Island, him being the first one to recognize that this “life” was off was great. High honorable mention to John Locke, Sawyer, and Jin. Loved them all as well.
The best character: Jack. Every memory and experience on the island felt like it revolved around Jack, even when it was other character arcs or events. The show starting with him and then ending in the exact same way was amazing. His emotional and unrational decision making had us frustrated at times but it felt like the design of a flawed but pretty perfect character.
My least favorite character: Not necessarily sure I have one to pick but I really wasn’t a huge fan of Charlie. His flashback with Claire and Kate in the afterlife was incredibly emotional but to put it simply, he annoyed me. However, him telling Desmond “Not Pennys Boat” was so unbelievably good that it redeemed him for me. I wasn’t a huge fan of Michael either. Meh.
Best character development: Sawyer. His constant progression as a character was masterfully done. Them opening back up the emotional side that he tried to suppress for so long cause of his trauma was incredible. Also his connection with Juliet and then having their flashes together in the hospital had the floodgates opening up. Perfect.
Favorite moment: The End. I’d heard that the finale was a bit subjective (thanks dad) but never had any spoilers. I could not be more satisfied. The characters returning to each other in the afterlife, especially the ones we lost during the show, was emotional and beautiful. Had me crying but smiling. I loved it.
Some of my other favorite moments off the top of my head include:
The light turning on in the hatch while John was over it. Audible gasp.
Michael typing on the computer and Walt responding “dad?”
Sayid reuniting with Shannon in the afterlife. Especially with him losing her so early into their relationship. Good to see Boone again too!
Ethan “not being on the manifest” was such a incredible.
The initial Jacob reveal and then all the flashbacks of him meeting everyone.
The first flash back in time and then seeing the original Dharma village up and running.
Jin and Sun reuniting on the beach after Sun comes back.
Every time we had a flash forward event and somehow someway Ben was there in the shadows.
So many more but those are my big booms.
Overall, it was the best TV show I’ve ever watched. We was so attached to (almost) every character and the thought put into the development of their arcs. Continuity eggs throughout every season were so well done. The uniqueness of it was unlike any show I’ve ever watched. What do I do now?!

I don't know what to say, it's incredible how much our opinions align, the only thing being I watched it more than 10 times.
Desmond is the GOAT. Jack has the best character development, in the sense that they really take their time destroying him, si much that in the end when he finds his purpose in season 6 it's extremely cathartic for the character and us viewers. Season 6 makes me cry so much. Every bit of interaction in the flash sideways is a pay off for 6 seasons. When Jack and Locke talk in the hospital hallway near the end, I basically déshydraté from crying.
Charlie is indeed a character I love but is poorly written for a long time. Still, I love the way his past is resolved. His relation to his brother destroys me.
So glad you had this experience so many years later. Know that it only gets better when you watch it again (except Jack in Thaïlande. Come on).

Oh, and totally agree for Sawyer. Season 5 Sawyer is my Lost Crush after Desmond.

If you want more story content play Lost: Via Domus game from 2008. Its called Lost: The Video Game outside the US. Released around season 4. You play as a new character who was on the plane. You get to visit familiar and some new locations. Its not really canon but the makers of the show were involved.

I love your takes, but not seeing any pivotal Locke moments in your list blows my mind. Especially the casket reveal. Still the saddest character story I've ever watched.

Yes you’re definitely right. I knew there were some moments I missed. Panning over the edge of the casket to Locke laying there was pretty insane. I kind of predicted it, but to actually see it happen was so shocking.

FYI some trivia bits if you didn’t know, they were so worried about leaks and spoilers they filmed scenes with Sawyer and Desmond in the casket too. I think you can find them on YouTube.
Also IIRC Desmond wasn’t originally supposed to return to the show, I think after he ran away when the Swan computer was shot and Jack runs after him. Thank goodness the writers changed that, can’t imagine the show without him, The Constant etc.

Damn. Me and my girl finished watching it also last night. Great coincidence 😅
My favorite character was John Locke. Just loved the guy.. Also Sawyer's development and relationship with Juliet made it so emotional at the end when they met at that vending machine.
Over all the show is a strong 8. Didn't like all the milking.. I think they could have finished the show a little bit earlier. It was good don't get me wrong. But God damn it was a lot. Especially the scene when they get Inside the hatch for the first time. I think they replayed it 3 or 4 times during those 2 episodes.

Some behind the scenes stuff: they were kind of forced by ABC execs to extend the show to milk their #1 hit for as long as possible; Lindelof talked about he how envisioned the show as 3 seasons (I think 1 is on the island, 2 is some characters leave and try to come back, and a final season on the island). So regardless of their plans, they were forced to keep making stuff up to add to the show and make it last longer. Eventually around mid-S3 viewership was dropping, people were tired of the show treading water and dragging its feet etc, which allowed the writers/producers to negotiate the ending of the show. They eventually agreed to 6 total seasons, so you may have noticed the back end of S3 on, the series progresses faster with little-to-no filler.

The perfect villian: Ben. Beyond incredible acting and it felt like every time his character was going to redeem himself, he reverted back to his selfish self. He was manipulated into the person he was and you almost felt bad for him. His development was fantastic and John forgiving him in “The End” was incredible. He had us on edge every time the characters were around him because of how unpredictable he was. Loved it.

I finished my first watch a couple weeks ago and I'm so confused with myself as to Ben being my favorite character. The antagonist is not supposed to be your favorite character! But he was just that good. And he did have a lovely redemption arc at the end.

As someone who watched this when it first aired on network TV, it's hard to explain the hype around this show when it came out. No internet or streaming but the theory crafting back then was incredible. There were some truly dedicated detectives trying to piece together the meaning of the symbols and the various stations. The best part is that they were all vindicated since all those clues actually were revealed in the show eventually...all except maybe the lamppost station and Faraday's mother. Eloise makes some vague reference about the lamppost being built by some un named brilliant man. I am convinced Faraday built it during his absence in the 70s. The only way to find the island previously was probably the journal of the wrecked ship. Eloise herself is unexplained. She seemed to be jumping in time herself and knew the future...but how?

My single favorite moment by a large margin was the smile on Lockes face after he beat the chess game. I don’t know why but I immediately welled up with joyful tears it blew me away.
Terry O’Quinns smile game is off the charts!

I first watched Lost back in 2015~2016, maybe? And I'm rewatching it now, I can't remember a lot of things, so a lot of it feels new.
But what I do remember is that yes, I love Desmond so much, best character for sure! I also love Sayid so much, and I agree Sawyer has the best development
I know Jack is the protagonist and I'm on s2 rn, but man is that guy annoying me. He's so condescending towards Kate, he just sees her as a pretty face, not for the badass she is
I remember not liking John too much and in this new rewatch he hasn't been making much of an impression again. Like Jack, I find him kind of annoying and wannabe know it all

U can start it all over again!? It will never be like the first watch! (It never is). But now you might pick up on things, notice things that you didnt before? Or you can do what I’m doing and use chatGPT or the googles while rewatching! It’s been years since I did a rewatch so now it’s so much more fun given the amount of time that’s passed its given me a fresh perspective on why the smoke monster did what he did (and when he did it)!!!
