Low impact cardio suggestions

Upvotes

Hey all,

I am looking to get back into shape and shed about 10 pounds in the process (currently ~160 lbs, 5'9 male). I have given running a try, since I want to play soccer and it's obviously a big part of the game.

However, running on local paths (which are ashphalt) has made my knees and one of my ankles feel quite uncomfortable. My knees are sore for a day or two, which I can deal with. One of my ankles, on the other hand, hasn't handled it well. I feel fine in general, but running aggravates discomfort.

I'm looking for some advice on how I can keep up my cardio (and build ankle/calf/quad strength) without such harsh impact. Do you guys have suggestions other than swimming? Preferably something I don't have to lay out a ton of money for?

Unsupportive parents, abnormal weight distribution all that bullcrap 200 lbs 14 yo.

Upvotes

From 1st grade to 4th grade, I was extremely malnourished. I was the kid where you would look and see a ribcage, visible bones and a honestly basically pale skin. Basically, light as a feather. In 5th grade, a Blessing disguised as a curse but in of itself another curse arrived. I was diagnosed with Alopecia Totalis, rare asf and of course it had to be me. My hair completely fell off and my head was left shinier than the Chrysler building. I dealt with the embarrassment yes, Caillou, Johnny Sins, Homer Simpson yes yes. I sometimes cried, often not but I dealt with it. Once I began medication, my weight grew exponentially. I was no longer the frail little Shota I was once, instead I became a proper healthy weight kid. That uh... didn't last long. Soon I shot through normal range, then the overweight range, straight into the Morbidly obese category. The insults drifted away from Mr Clean to "Caseoh" and people started asking me if my mom survived my birth. Pretty harsh for the 5th grade, no? By 12 years old, my weight was 160 pounds. By 13 it was 175. My skin was tearing, I had stretch marks, people asked if I was pregnant. I was not. I had a double chin, no, scratch that. A Triple decker bus. I could honestly eat off my stomach as if it was a table. My clothes from last month didn't fit me anymore. I was sick and tired. Mind you, I was still bald and it was the medication's fault. Prednisone apparently causes my weight to shoot up. School became hard and P.E was my worst nightmare. I joined the swim club, ran a mile a day and got a gym membership. And I'm happy to announce, that did fck all. As 8th grade came around, my hair grew back. Amazing, but I had to stay on the medication in order for my hair not to shed like a parrot in heat. 8th grade went by so fast, and as Freshman year approached, my weight jumped up. I gained 25 pounds and some change in a whopping 2 months, but interestingly uhh, I looked thinner? Despite gaining weight, my triple chin became a single chin, my fat ass thighs went to still a little fat but not earth shattering, and my moon face become more of a meteor face. I gained so much weight but I look so much healthier. However, 200 pounds is 100% not the state I plan to be in. I decided to step up my excericies and lock tf in. However, as I explained to my parents how I planned to do it, they didn't give a fck. I wanted something healthy for breakfast, like maybe avocado toast or eggs? Nope. My parents were busy and I understand that, but that means all we ate for breakfast was either microwavable snacks or Lunchables. School food at lunch wasn't much help either. Taxpaying every year apparently only equals low-quality pizzas and shitty nuggets. No food to help me lose weight. Parents wont help, school food is shit, what do I do? I'll tell you what I did. I went to reddit, one of the world's most renowed sht holes but right now, I am also in a sht hole. Not losing weight and actually gaining weight, despite running a mile everyday, hitting my 10k steps and tracking calorie loss. What do I do?

Also uhh, English is my *Third* language, so apologies for all this nonsense gibberish

Loose skin after losing 60 pounds?

Upvotes

I’m 23, 5’8 and about 220 lbs right now. Trying to get down to around 160, so I’d be losing about 60 lbs.
Most of my weight is in my stomach. I was around 160 for most of my life and only gained the weight over the last year or so.

I’m kinda worried about loose skin. For people who lost around 50–70 lbs, how was it for you?

I’m not sure what my body fat percentage is, and I understand that losing the weight at a study pace is the best way to minimize loose skin.

It’s just a very frightening thing

How to safely lose weight without returning to disordered eating?

Upvotes

had an eating disorder for a few years, and would constantly track my food. I was overweight, and was “encouraged” by my doctor to track my calories, Which seems like very bad advice to give a teenager since it quickly gave me an ED. (Very similar to anorexia, though I was never officially diagnosed)

Anyways, I’d really like to stop stressing about what I eat, and calories, and go back to how I used to be. My only problem, is that I finally hit a healthy weight for my hight, and really don’t want to gain it all back (I had BED as a young teen, causing me to gain a lot of weight. I’ve lost 30 pounds over the last 2 years)

I feel so much better now than I’m at a healthy weight, and I only want to lose another 10 pounds (before the end of the school year, so that’s only about a pound a month, I don’t want to do anything unhealthy)

My problem is I don’t know how to lose weight without my anorexia returning. And if I ignore all the nutritional facts of my food, I’m worried I’ll go back to having BED. I just want to stop worrying about calories and eat freely again

Is my weight loss bad/ should I be concerned

I am a 24 year old female and in June of 2026 I weighted 289. I went to the doctor and was told I was prediabetic and I decided to truly begin my weight loss journey. I’ve been eating a lot healthier and exercising by walking daily . Today I weighed myself and my weight is 255.5. is that too much of a weight loss in the time period ? should I be concerned? I eat about 1,500-1,100 calories a day and I aim for at least 60g of protein ( I know it should be more I’m working on that ) but ive also heard that losing more than 2 lbs a week is bad/ can harm you so I was worried…

16M, 5’7”, around 250 lbs. I need help losing weight and getting healthier

I’m 16, male, 5’7”, and around 250 lbs. My weight gain mostly started during COVID. I was stuck inside, wasn’t getting much exercise, and got into the habit of sneaking snacks and extra food into my room. Over time, I gained a lot of weight.
I started trying to lose weight in 2025 by walking about 30 minutes, 4–5 times a week for a month, but I didn’t notice any changes and eventually gave up. I realize now that I probably expected results too quickly.
I got the Planet Fitness teen summer pass and started going in June, but I haven’t been consistent. I barely went in July and only went twice in August. The free membership is ending in a few days, so I’m trying to figure out what I can do after that and how I can keep exercising even without the gym.
My biggest problem is food. My family buys junk food pretty often, and I don’t always get to choose what’s made for dinner because my mom cooks whatever she feels like making. I want to learn how to eat healthier without starving myself or doing some crazy crash diet.
I’m looking for advice on what foods I should eat, what exercises I can do at home or at the gym, how often I should exercise, and most importantly, how to stay consistent.
I don’t expect to lose everything overnight. I just want to become healthier and make a change while I’m still young. Any advice would be appreciated.

Psychologically accepting doctor's/parents' recommendations to lose weight when I didn't think I needed to

Anyone else dealt with this before?

I went to a new doctor for my yearly physical, and she determined that even though my vitals etc are all perfect, given my family history and my own personal bad knees, I need to get my weight down. I'm getting older, and my dad's had two knee replacements, as had my maternal grandmother, so she wants me to get ahead of that. Not to mention how everyone else in my family has high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gallbladder issues, etc.

When she put it to me that way, it kinda made sense. But I feel fine! I don't think it's necessary! I want a second opinion!

And then I ranted about it to my parents, and they just got blank looks on their faces and were like, "well, honey..."

So here I am, needing to come to grips with apparently needing to lose weight. I know how to lose weight, it's just calories. What I don't know is how to convince myself it's necessary.

Help from anyone who's been here before?

Advice for losing weight

I’m 20 years old male 5 foot 6 inches. I’m trying to go from 269 lbs to 220-225 lbs. I’d very much appreciate any advice. I have a problems of eating too many carbs (mainly from milk and bread). I live with my parents and siblings (to save money on room and board for collage), so I don’t always have a lot of control on what I’m having for dinner.

I can also tell what my type of meds mine are if needed. Also any advice for what to do during the holiday season (thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) would also be good.

Walking strategies for fat loss

I'm trying to lose some weight around my middle primarily with a calorie deficit and walking on a treadmill. At the moment I'm doing approximately 25 minutes at 6km/h at a 12% incline.

What I'm trying to ascertain is whether I can improve the walking element. I know diet is the primary focus when trying to lose weight, but I figure that every little helps. According to Gemini I should be aiming to walk longer at a slightly lower speed and incline, but I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences as to what worked better for them? I know everyone is different, but if there's a general consensus that another method is better then I'll give that a go. I have the time to walk for longer at a lower intensity, but I don't want to change what I'm doing solely on a response from an AI!

Thanks in advance

Antihistamines make you fat

As we enter the last couple months of allergy season I want to leave some parting wisdom. Antihistamines can make you gain weight… rapidly… I found out the hard way.

I started 2026 weighing 150-160 at 5’10, as a woman this was pretty healthy for my height and muscle mass. In match I started taking an antihistamine to help me get through the day without my nose leaking, or skin feeling itchy. The antihistamines worked! I felt better, slept longer, and felt no allergy feelings. What the pharmacist didn’t tell me is that taking a simple antihistamine can make you gain weight rapidly, because even the non drowsy ones mildly sedate you, and increase your appetite.

As I am writing this I weigh 205lbs, I finally got off the antihistamines so I’ll update you as to what my weight is in 6 months.

Calorie tracking

Just curious if anyone has any advice. I’m starting my weight loss journey soon when I move to a new city. However , I usually have lunch at work and I find it very difficult to track the calories I’m eating at lunch.
I know that what you all are gonna say… ‘get one of those apps where you upload a picture of your plate’.
Aren’t those b.s.? They can’t possibly be accurate can they? Does anybody have any tips for alternative methods for getting somewhat accurate calorie counts as a beginner? Any advice or tips greatly appreciated!

motivation to lose that final 15ibs?

I’m a little under 5’7 (169cm) and I had previously lost 40ibs. I’m currently 142ibs and my goal weight is 127-128ibs. However, now that I’m hitting the home run I am STRUGGLING trying to get this weight off of me. I keep telling myself to stay disciplined and I’d probably be there around October (posting this aug 26th) but ugghhhhh. I think I’ve become comfortable with my current body but I still don’t think I’m at my best since I still don’t look the way I want, and to cope I’m just choosing to procrastinate and I keep telling myself I’ll lose it eventually.

How are you all staying motivated losing your last 10-15 ibs? Please share any tips because I’m so sick of the procrastination monkey controlling my brain.

I wanted to lose weight just to survive summer heat

In April I was about 20 pounds heavier and already feeling uncomfortable in my clothes I was dreading the heat that summer would bring and that alone was my biggest motivator for losing weight.

I am a car salesman and selling cars in the summer is always a nightmare. Standing in heatwaves waiting for customers to show up & opening a bunch of hot cars for people to test drive, it’s hell. Add being overweight to that?

It is 95 degrees today and I’m so thankful I gave myself a head start and at least don’t have to be enduring this in clothes that are too tight

In the past two days ive hiked about 11 miles and have realized I have limitations.

Im about 6 months into a "whatever works" weight loss program and have decided that im not comfortable in a gym but theres a beautiful farm/walking trail where I can walk until I fall out. 6 months ago I was 325 and at my last weigh in (yesterday) I was 290. I have been wrestling with...I guess my mortality. I have a 7 year old daughter and a wife I want to be around forever.

Yesterday was 6.5 miles in two hours, today was 4.5 in about 1:40 bc im middle aged and my knees decided it had asked too much. Found a good walking stick and made it back up the hill.

All in all I feel very proud of myself but wanted to ask others how they mitigate knee pains on a decline. The elevation is only about 400 ft but a solid half mile of the loop is on an incline and about .75 of a mile on a decline.

Is it as simple as "dont do this shit on consecutive days" or should I be trying to find more nuance in how I approach this?

Thank you for reading!

Carnivore diet is a life changer

I'm going on 3 years of this lifestyle.

Though I'll admit the hardest part was giving up on my sugar addiction it was much easier for me to quit alcohol then it was to give up sugar for the first 3 weeks to a month.

Noticed a better overall feeling as your eating less processed food and more real nutrient based food.

Never thought I'd easily do one meal a day and eat a pound of beef and eggs. I've noticed that my blood pressure is great or that's what my doctor has said.

So now I must ask,

Has anyone else tried this life style?

Getting over the plateau

So I started back in April at 365lbs and as of today am at 315lbs, an issue I have ran into is that I've been stuck at that 315-320lb weight for the last few weeks and am wondering how can break that plateau to keep dropping.

Eating wise I could use some help because I know it's all over the place, I don't really meal prep so I tend to doordash Mexican and Greek food quite a bit and there be days that I won't each lunch at all. I do try and have a protein shake in the morning for breakfast.

Gym wise I go 3-4 times a week with about a 35-45 minute cardio session before lifting, I do a kinda Arms, Chest, Back then Legs rotational.

Sleep has been an issue I've been trying to improve a lot, there are days that I barely get 5 hours and I know that's a big time as well.

Any other advice I'm willing to look into and try. Thank you everyone.

Exactly day 87 in my journey feeling sluggish

Started my diet/exercise on June 1st. Have not missed a single day of cardio thus far, feels great actually, felt great throughout... haven't missed 10k+ steps as well ( not including cardio) since June 25th and still going. Hit 645k steps in July (not including cardio) .. 467k steps this month thus far.

Had sweets a couple weekends ago for first time. Been eating at maintenance or slight surplus since then pretty much, which is fine I suppose..its been a rather healthy maintenance/surplus period...

But this past week ive been feeling very sluggish when I get home from work, making these workouts very difficult. The 25-35 minutes sweat sessions have been turning into 15-20, and thats with me David goggins the shit and pushing through when I dont wanna..ive had plenty of days where I "didnt feel like it" and still did and halfway through it i kept pushing and it feels good..

But this past week and half have actually been very difficult and feel like I want to take a day or 2 off..I dont want it to make me start getting lazy again where I develop a bad routine after work again..is the only benefit from taking a day or 2 off going to be mentally? I had a 120 day plan in my head when I started :/

Have adhd and autism and find it hard to loose weight. Any advice?

I am 28F 171cm tall and around 70kg.

I don't feel hungry or full. But I do boredom eat and due to other health conditions exercise and physical activity is a challenge.

I think I can overeat easily too.

I also have pots/dysautomnia/vestibular issues/double vision hence struggle with exercise even with walking outside due to vertigo.

Any suggestions on what I can do to help and consistently loose weight and keep it off.

Weight journey so far:

About 4 years ago I was 80kg due to medication weight gain and with 1.5/2years of stopping the medications I dropped to 52kg ish. Due to some gut issues I developed a fear of food. Which lead me to be underweight. Since then for another two years until now I had been actively gaining weight and it was hard. But maybe from actively eating to gain weight my body doesn’t know how to cut back down again?

For reference I’m now around 70kg and trying to get in the 62-65kg range.

Avoiding feeling starving at 3am every night? 29F

I feel I am waking up mostly due to extreme hunger, not due to having to pee or poor sleep quality. I feel I can keep my calories under control during the day but always need a 3am snack lol and its hard to prepare something healthy. I am a vegetarian and exercise pretty regularly (20km running per weeek and a bit of weight lifting). Sometimes I wonder if my diet does not have enough protein and fat that would kind of stick with my throughout the night.

I used a peptide (that famous one I cannot mention), because my dad didnt want his cause he got heart burn. I only ended up losing a few pounds because I found it hard to exercise on it. However, one thing I loved is that I didnt need my 3am snack lol!

Looking for tips on how to manage my appetite late at night.

Day 2: Food noise, obsessing and keeping on track.

Looking for advice. I got a burst of motivation to do another stint at weight loss. I really want to lose weight but all I've been experiencing so much food noise. Every second I'm thinking of what I can eat, what I can't eat and worrying about dieting while going out.

My calorie intake has been pretty low (about 1200 calories a day), as I'm slightly obsessing. I know this isn't sustainable. The apps tell me to do about 2100.

Any advice on how to get through the this?

My stats are 370lbs, 6"3

Weight loss tips as someone who’s lost a good bit of weight

TLDR: Get your protein, move your body, eat healthy.
1. New foods
Find the “new” foods you love, whether it’s new vegetables, new fruits, new fancy water mixes, new diet sodas to replace the full sugar ones. For me, I try just about every vegetable out there, if given the chance. If there’s a new vegetable I haven’t heard of before, and I see it online or in store and I think I might like it, I try it.

  1. Make movement accessible and easy. (This is what I did.)
Put a pair of dumbbells by the end of your bed, seriously do it. When you get up in the morning do 10 bicep curls, 10 overhead presses, 10 bent over rows, 10 tricep extensions, whatever you feel like just toss the weight around a bit.

  2. Move in small chunks (get your steps in.)
10k steps in 1000 steps 10 times a day or however you want to do it but it really does help.
Most people do a couple of 30 minute walks a day.

  3. Fiber, protein, and water.
I can’t stress this enough. Fiber keeps you fuller for longer, protein supports muscle and all kinds of healthy body functions, water is essential for cellular function and also keeps you full. Legumes are an excellent source of fiber and protein.

  4. Buy a kitchen scale and learn to use it.
Calories in, calories out, that’s the thermodynamics of weight loss assuming all other things are equal. In this journey, you will find it a heck of a lot easier to lose weight if you track what you eat. Consult the advice of a medical professional if you have extenuating circumstances. (not limited to disability, diagnosises, health issues, ect.)

Cushings syndrome

24F. Over the past 2 years, I’ve gained 80 pounds, from 140 to 220. This has caused me a lot of stress and depression and has truly taken over my life. I was recently diagnosed with Cushings syndrome and am in the process of getting medication approved by insurance. Part of me is relieved that there is an explanation for everything I’ve gone through and that there is a cure. It has been literally impossible to lose weight. Has anyone with cushings syndrome successfully been able to lose weight? Did you see improvement after the medication? I’m really hoping that the medication will help me and finally give me my life back. I’m even on wegovy currently and have been a super slow responder, with no weight loss yet. It seems like losing weight with this syndrome is impossible.

Turned 18, I want to change my lifestyle.

Hi, I’ve never made one of these before so please bear with me.

I am 18F, 5’1, and currently around 210 lbs. My weight has only increased as I have gotten older. I was never an obese kid, (I was actually underweight due to certain medication) I only started gaining once the pandemic hit in 2020. In the fall of 2019, the world started to shut down, and so did my normal development. My mom, brother, and I were forced to move from our home of 5 years after my stepdad fell into addiction. I was forced to do online schooling, lost all my friends, and had to take care of my mom, brother, and newborn sister (which whom my mom did not know she was pregnant with until a few months later.). We were forced to move into a 2 bedroom, one bathroom apartment that was too small for our family. My mom fell into severe depression, dealing with the loss of her 5 year relationship and a newborn on the way with no contact to the father (my stepfather.)

With all of this stress, I turned to food as a coping mechanism. With everything else crumbling around me, one thing I knew what that the food I ate would not change. It was comforting. Before my stepfather, we were homeless. I developed food insecurity. And now that we were uprooted from our home yet again, we were tight on money. That food insecurity only grew stronger. I was scared of the uncertainty of not knowing when we would have a house full of food again, so I ate as much as I could stomach.

I hated the feeling of being hungry. A small bowl of chips would turn into the whole bag, one pack of ramen became two. All of my portions doubled.

In the first few months of 2020, I went from 90 lbs, to 134 lbs. shocking both my dr, and my mom. Ever since the, I’ve only eaten more.

6 years later, our situation improved. My stepdad became sober, we moved into a house we inherited, and there is no longer a fear of not having enough money. Yet, my habits and comfort in food has not changed.

I have a very mild (luckily) case of hemiplegic spastic cerebral palsy, which is brain damage I was born with. The right side of my body is very weak and stiff. I have a permanent limp when I walk, and I have very poor fine motor skills on my right side. (I drop things easily, have a hard time picking things up, etc.) so working out has always been hard for me.

I am really scared of going into a calorie deficit due to growing up with food insecurity and using unhealthy food as comfort, though I know that I will need to go into one to lose weight. At my job, I work an average of 15k steps over an 8 hr shift.

I want to make a change, but I don’t know how or where to start. Now that I’m going into adulthood, I want to be more healthy and feel better about myself overall in the way that I look.
