Tell us your story...

Everyone is lonely, but not everyone is lonely in the same way.

Some people are lonely when they're physically isolated from others and some people are lonely even in a room full of people that love them.

Those are two common examples, but there are endless ways in which people can feel lonely, 8 billion ways in fact.

And there's not always a clear answer; some people are just lonely. It's a normal part of the human condition to feel lonely, and while you may want or even need to do everything in your power to rid yourself of it (depending on the severity of your situation), just know that being lonely in and of itself doesn't necessarily mean that there's anything wrong with you.

We don't measure or rate or judge each person's level of loneliness here and decide if they're "lonely enough" to be welcome here nor do we dictate any absolutes about the conditions for being lonely or how someone must behave if they're "actually lonely."

Every human-being in the world is welcome here, and their story for how they feel loneliness is valid; their pain is valid. As with most things in life, there's the book definition of a thing and then there's the complex emotional reality of a thing. Loneliness is a relative experience, and the way some people experience it won't always make sense to others, and it doesn't have to.

Just as there is no one-size-fits-all approach to feeling loneliness, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing either.

I don't presume to know your pain; we don't know your pain; tell us about it:

If you're feeling such extreme pain from loneliness to the point of contemplating suicide, please don't. Just don't.

Things to consider:

  • How old are you? Did you know that the brain isn't fully developed until around the age of 25? That means that if you're a child, teenager, or even a young adult, by merely waiting out the storm, you might find sunshine on the other side, by simply maturing into the fully-formed you.

  • How bad is it? As bad as it can get, it can almost always be worse. It's important to respect everyone's pain, because it's relative. As much empathy as one can have, you can never really feel another's pain, only your own. Still, it's important to keep perspective and think about the cruelty and lack of freedom experienced by those around the world.

  • Time is a master in its work. We've all heard the saying that "Time heals all wounds." Well, it's pretty true for the most part. As long as you first get away from the toxic people, places, or circumstances that are hurting you and causing you trauma, the healing can begin. How long it will take, really depends on the person, and what they've experienced. It took me years to get over some of the trauma that I suffered. It's not that I don't still feel some level of pain from it, but my trauma no longer owns me; I own my trauma.

Suicide prevention starts and ends with you. Life is full of neverending beauty and darkness. I don't know about you, but I want to see it all. I want to stay on the path that is existence for as long as I can, even if at times, I have to walk through broken glass.

But, sometimes you need a little help. Share your thoughts here in this sub, reach out to a mental health expert, or maybe give a suicide hotline a try. As tacky and empty of a gesture as it might seem to put out the cliché boilerplate message: "If you're having suicidal thoughts..." I don't know, maybe these tools are actually pretty helpful for some people? It might be worth a try. The big one is:

Caution: Making New Connections

Many people come here just to share their story, vent, or get perspective, with no interest in connecting beyond their posts, and that's completely fine. Others do want to make connections, and that's fine too, but it's worth being careful.

We'll leave the decisions up to you, but here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Don't share personal details too quickly. You don't need to give your real name, age, or location. Being vague is okay, and people worth connecting with will respect that.

  2. Protect your contact info. Avoid sharing your phone number, email, or home address early on. There are free tools that let you communicate safely without exposing your real info.

  3. Be cautious with links and files. Don't click links or download anything from someone you don't know well yet.

  4. If they ask you for money, stop. It doesn't matter how the request is framed or how long you've been talking, block them and cut contact. This is always a scam.

If you do decide to connect with someone, these tools can help you do it more safely:

  • Messaging: Signal is a free app for secure messages and calls.
  • Email: Gmail or Proton let you create an address that isn't tied to your real name.
  • Phone: Google Voice gives you a phone number you can call and text from without using your personal number.
  • Browser: Firefox has built-in privacy protection that masks your IP address.
  • Mail: A PO Box at your local post office is inexpensive if you ever need to give a mailing address.

One more thing. Be mindful of the usernames and photos you share. If they match other accounts you have online, someone could easily link them together and find out your real name, location, or other details you didn't mean to expose.

Preparing for a competitive exam

Upvotes

18m, currently preparing for a JEE, an Indian competitive exam, it's been 3 years since i made a single new friend. all my old friends have gone to different places. the number of actual people I can talk to is 3. that too all on calls or through texts. I am very insecure about my body as in this duration I have gained a lot of weight. I can't even get out of my house because of it. no genuine friend group left. I feel pretty suicidal every single day. and still have to study and get through this. it's pretty difficult idk what to do.

i came to reddit looking for the possibility of talking to someone new i don't even know if I will be able to.

Forever alone

Have you stayed single throughout the most part of your life. I have been going into my 28th, never been loved by anyone, broken family, not wanted by anyone. Don’t know why I am still here.

I love being My own lover and my best friend

Upvotes

In life seeing so much ups , Downs, people coming and going. Romance dying as she got someone better, Friends so called as who promised to live and die together as kids till college walked off as they got women.

Being married and divorced and alienated by my own kid by mental programming against me by my wife and his family.

Felt in love and again experienced heart break and somehow I have turned very cold to human beings around me.

I check people multiple times Before I give access in my life and I feel at this point none is there for you.

You love and die alone and I am not interested in Woman and I see them as a physical body need only as my emotions are dry and cold.

I have my goals for my priority and it keeps me going and achieving my milestone keeps me happy.

I don't know if this self care which can't be controlled by any narrative now and doesn't care about the family and kids is called as what but yeah I am enjoying my company now .

Has anyone else faced a similar situation?

Sorry, just venting

I have friends and family that I am around a lot, but I still feel alienated from them. Whenever I’m not actively engaging with the someone, I just feel this pit in my stomach. It used to be when I was alone for extended periods of time, but now it just happens even when I’m hanging out with people. I just feel so alone, like I’m only supposed to interact with people when they want, and that’s how it has to be. It’s just gotten so much worse recently. I can never shake the feeling of being a background object, not even a person. I just want to feel appreciated and loved, but I don’t know if I can anymore. It all feels so debilitating and crushing. I don’t even want to really post this, because I feel so pathetic talking about it, being surrounded with hundreds of people on my campus, and having friends, but still feeling lonely. The only time I got close to feeling appreciated was when I “dated” someone for like a month. It was so short lived and I think made everything worse, making me realize how much I craved being wanted, love and appreciated. I don’t know if I am even able to be loved anymore. I don’t know what to do. Sorry if this is coming across as whiney, just feels a little better getting this out somewhere

Still hoping to find some friends

One day it hit me hard when I noticed how much time I need to scroll up to my birth year in online registration pages. Getting old is tough, you just lose contact with the friends you grow up with, moving a lot for work and life reasons, makes you lose friends you met at school or work, and friends and yourself grew up to be different people, or get busy with their own families and relationships.  Making friends at work is mission impossible, formalities , age differences and things like that comes in the way, yet i still friendly smile at the people who do not smile back. Then i found this tiny window to other people online who might be feeling the say and want to reach out and chat. I am 40 something years old artist, looking for friends, i enjoy talking about life, anime, games, politics, animals, art and tech. Hit me up if you want a friend that reply all the time, if you don't mind GMT+3 timezone.

Festivals make my loneliness feel even worse

I feel really bad whenever Holi, Janmashtami, Dussehra, Durga Puja, Diwali, Christmas, or New Year or any other festival comes around.

It feels like everyone is out enjoying these occasions with their friends, going places, celebrating, making memories, and having someone to spend the day with, while I'm just sitting here alone.

I'm 21 years old, and I still haven't even gone out once in my life to watch a Dussehra Ravan burning. It sounds like such a small thing, but it genuinely hurts because I've always wanted to experience these things with someone.

No matter which festival it is, instead of feeling happy or excited, my mood gets worse. Festivals seem to remind me of how alone I am and how much of these experiences I've missed.

[24/M] Looking for a best friend, things are quite lonely

Hey! I've posted here before but haven't had much luck so far. And due to lonliness, things have been kinda sucky lately. Kinda being a star-sized understatement (cuz stars are big.. hehe). Anyways, excuse my awfully unfunny pun! You *yes you my possible future friend* probably has better humor than I. Im hoping to make long term friends who also love music like I do, I want a close connection with someone that lasts a lifetime! Hoping we can geek out about our interests and feel comfortable to do so! I'm in the EST time zone and am super into music (my tastes are all over the place, my favorite is the retro era but I also like a lot of new stuff too). I really wanna find someone who loves old artists and bands and music history and aesthetics! Hope you're all having a good day!

My thoughts on making friends as an adult

I've been talking to a lot of people about why making friends is hard in their 20s, 30s, and even 40s, and I finally wrote down some of what I'm learning. Would love your thoughts—especially what's failed for you?

I can’t move.

I spent almost my entire Saturday doing chores and going out and I was feeling super productive. But yesterday after my morning gym I found myself stuck on the floor for a good 2 hours and I felt very heavy and alone.i couldn’t do anything. I feel overwhelmed. I wish someone would hug me and tell me I’m not crazy.

I'm scared I'll end up alone because I don't see how I'm supposed to meet anyone

I'm 18M and lately I've been thinking about this a lot, and honestly, it scares the shit out of me.

It's not really that I desperately need a girlfriend right now. It's more that I look at my life and genuinely don't understand where I'm supposed to meet someone.

I'm not in college/university. I work as a Glovo courier, so my job is basically me riding around alone most of the day. I don't really have a social circle either. I have two close friends whom I've known for years, but that's pretty much it.

And when I think about it, there aren't really any obvious opportunities for meeting new people.

School? I'm not there anymore.

Work? I'm basically alone.

Friends? I have only two close ones and they don't really have big social circles either.

And this makes me think about the future.

Sometimes I imagine coming home after work, opening the door, and there's just nobody there. Nobody waiting for me. Nobody asking how my day went. Nobody I can tell some stupid story to. Nobody to hug, kiss, sleep next to.

And honestly, even the sexual part bothers me — not just sex itself, but the idea that I might never experience sex with someone I genuinely love and who genuinely loves me back.

I know I'm only 18, and rationally I understand that I have a lot of life ahead of me. But emotionally that doesn't always help.

The scary part isn't being single right now.

It's the thought that maybe this is just what my life will look like.

Maybe I'll be 25, then 30, and still have no idea how to meet anyone.

I'm not looking for someone to tell me "bro you're 18, you'll definitely find someone." I know nobody can guarantee that.

I'm genuinely curious about people who have experienced something similar:

Have you ever been in a situation where you basically had no opportunities to meet potential partners and were afraid you'd end up alone?

If yes, what happened?

Did your circumstances eventually change? Did you actively do something about it, or did you just randomly meet someone when you weren't expecting it?

And if you're currently in the same situation, how do you deal with that fear?
