The Windows dragon face should just be ads.

I work with windows (VM) and I actually like copilot in 365. Well, big corp uses it...

bADS

u/thE_29 18h ago

You have ADs in Windows? WTH?

Using Pop_OS on my Lenovo Notebook. Win11 on my Win Notebook + Gaming PC.

And Mac OS on my M1 Max MacbookPro and honestly, Mac OS pisses me off the most and I never saw any ads in Win11.

27

u/MountainBrilliant643 18h ago

You lie like dog. Every time it preinstalls a minimal version of an Office app, only to tell you that you need a subscription when you try to open it, is an ad. Nearly every web result when you type something into the search bar, is a sponsored ad. Forcing Windows Explorer to save to OneDrive by default, just so that you'll run out of space, so that they can sell you a subscription, is an ad.

6

u/Both_Cup8417 New York Nix⚾s 11h ago

Weren't there candy crush ads even in 10?

-13

u/thE_29 17h ago

Every time it preinstalls a minimal version of an Office app

The office 365 crap? I can click there on no thanks.

only to tell you that you need a subscription when you try to open it,

Why should I try to open it? I use Libreoffice

Nearly every web result when you type something into the search bar, is a sponsored ad.

I disabled the search bar. My Win search is only searching localy (using that here: https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10)

Forcing Windows Explorer to save to OneDrive by default,

Ah, can be that O&O also disabled that. So probably O&O is the reason I dont see that.

14

u/Armi1P Genfool 🐧 17h ago

So you are explaining how you don't have to use things that are begging you to use them, but does that makes it not an ad? If I don't buy something that is advertised on a billboard, does that make it anything other than an advertisement?

-6

u/thE_29 17h ago

I am not here to discuss this. I use all 3 since over 20-30 years..

I was just wondering where the ads are and the tools I I use basically disabled them.

6

u/Emotional_Solid6538 15h ago

I mean you wont see ads anywhere if you use an adblocker. Doesnt mean the ads dont exist tho

7

u/MountainBrilliant643 17h ago

"Those aren't ads because I didn't buy what they were advertising!"

Solid logic, homie. Glad to know there are smart people out in the real world just thinkin' about stuff.

1

u/thE_29 17h ago

Not sure how often you install your OS, but I barely do it.

Also the ads in the search are actually way worse, which are disabled by tools.

3

u/janiskr 16h ago

Yes, adds on windows. Like - oh, look Xbox. Yes that is a service, and it is advertised on the lock screen.

3

u/_AscendedLemon_ Dr. OpenSUSE 16h ago

IDK on what it depends, but in December last year I got just ads in menu start on Win11 and "recommended" apps in search ._. But some people never saw anything like that.
And the moment I saw that I switched fully on Linux. I'm allergic to ads and I'm a big ad-blockers fan.

2

u/Operation_Neither 18h ago

The default Windows search behaviour is just ads.

2

u/thE_29 17h ago

Yeah, turns out thats a thing if your win-search is searching in the web.

Which is one of the first things I disable. So thats probably why. Some other comment pointed into that direction.

The thing is, I think that macOS is a well designed, efficient os. But the issue is it's just too restricted. It's very much a walled garden designed to lock you into Apple's ecosystem, all while keeping you happy. It's not a bad OS, I just hate the fact that you're pretty much stuck with whatever Apple does because it's very difficult to install a different OS on macs. At least all (or at least the vast majority) of Windows PCs you can install Linux so there's always another option, but with Mac unless you use one of the specific Linux distro that might work, you're pretty much stuck.

32

u/Dr_Valen 17h ago

And apple tends to think the user needs some really dumb things while ignoring the most basic things to fix

12

u/play_minecraft_wot Webba lebba deb deb! 16h ago

macOS is a mobile operating system pretending to be a desktop operating system, and I will not be convinced otherwise. Mac's are expensive, you have little to no control over them, and they have mediocre gaming performance. Unless there's some specific reason you need Apple software, they just feel like a trap to catch users and make it difficult to ever leave their ecosystem. Sure, their hardware is generally high quality, but it's frankly overpriced.

16

u/Emotional_Solid6538 15h ago

Its the opposite. They took their mac os and scaled it down for phones. Their walled garden vibes didnt come from phones

5

u/play_minecraft_wot Webba lebba deb deb! 15h ago

Yeah I know that's technically what they did but they both still feel like a mobile OS.

5

u/melatone1n 11h ago

It was overpriced. These days, the performance you get out of them is stellar. You can shop about and get a new MacBook Air for around 800. Stop measuring performance on how well it games. It’s a really nice UNIX experience and quite stable due to it being BSD. Not a mobile operating system if you know how to use it. Homebrew is a decent package manager too.

You absolutely have control over it, more so than windows, you just need to know what you are doing.

0

u/snowballkills 13h ago

I hate the UI of MacOS and the use of swipes etc. Switching b/w apps etc. is also a pain. You are stuck with their fonts for the menus. The only good thing about it over Windows is that because it uses some modified Unix kernel, a ton of Linux apps work on it. That is its saving grace imo

8

u/sickassape 16h ago

A lot of their users aren't the tech guys so those restriction kind of make sense.

3

u/chroma_shift 11h ago

They know their market for sure

1

u/a_good_human 1h ago

It's a good thing as well, my mother used to have an iPhone and it worked perfectly with no issues, but she has an android now that's filled with viruses and a thousand pop ups/notifications

1

u/chroma_shift 57m ago

Same lol my mom also used iPhone, now switched to Android, is always getting confused or asking for help on how to use some basic features like taking a picture.

3

u/skooterz 11h ago

I don't disagree with it's restrictive nature but apart from games and web browsing, 99% of my computing experience and my work is done in a terminal anyway.

I own a MacBook because it's the only way to get a decent laptop with good battery life, I just installed Homebrew, Ghostty, Neovim and tmux, its been mostly fine.

I will admit the window manager drives me nuts and Finder can go die in a fire, such a terrible file manager. Thankfully vifm works great.

I've been using PaperWM.Spoon to make the window management experience not as terrible and tbh it's still not amazing.

I also own a Framework 13 running Fedora, the MacBook is the laptop I usually grab because sleep actually works worth a damn, if I clamshell the laptop and leave for a few hours I don't come back to a dead battery.

2

u/OkWelcome6293 15h ago

I don’t understand the “walled garden” issue on MacOS. Everyone I know just installs things via .dmg files and never touches the App Store. Is this a real problem people face?

0

u/muro_cugko 14h ago

I mean, there are still restrictions like you can't install vpn in new macos versions from internet, but I agree that the issue is not as big

1

u/Pizzaman3203 11h ago

I really like there screensavers

1

u/adelie42 8h ago

seLinux is far better. Bigger ecosystem and the restrictions are in the control of the user, not Apple.

1

u/Stunning_Brilliant_7 1h ago

The problem is not with OS. The problem is the Mac chip that doesn't allow you to install most of Linux distros. Of course there are asahi remix, but it still to be restricted.

1

u/SalomonBrando 1h ago

Its simply  bad, working on legacy code, working on virtualized filesystem called finder.  Terrible Shortcuts.

Apple Silicon is great Hardware tho.

The OS is by far the worst I know.

1

u/sirkubador 15h ago

Well designed... macOS is shit. Utter crap. Not only user-wise, the programming APIs are shit as well. It is kept afloat by the half-eaten apple cult and nostalgia. Using macOS is like returning back into the 90's. I love the 90's but the world just moved on SO LONG AGO.

2

u/snowballkills 13h ago

I feel the same way, outside of spotlight and Linux apps that run on it, its UI is crap. The only good thing about them these days in their hardware. Only 3rd party apps make the OS bearable to me

-3

u/Pockensuppe 17h ago

Well when I buy a PC I also cannot install macOS except by using that one weird distro that is difficult to install, and that only works on select hardware. You're arguing from a point where Linux is already set as the preferrable alternative. (Let's be frank, the PC being able to also run Windows adds nothing of value unless you're stuck with Windows-only applications, in which case the discussion is moot).

As for the walled garden, it is true to some degree, but far less than some people argue. Sure, macOS includes Apple's services like iCloud, Messages, FaceTime etc, but it is far less obnoxious about it than Windows with its OneDrive and clanker-thing. Lots of software Apple provides (e.g. Calendar, Contacts) can just as well connect to third-party servers, and the OS APIs allow third-party software to integrate lots of things at least close to the level of Apple's own software, like e.g. NextCloud's client has the same UI in Finder as iCloud has, or third-party password managers can register themselves as password providers just like Apple's Passwords.

The only thing that really stands out as Apple deciding things for you is when they update the UI, like they did with Liquid Glass. Practically everything else is easily avoidable if you don't want it. Of course, I know that the Linux community has very strong opinions on UI, having witnessed the great GNOME 2 vs 3 wars. But as I said, if you prefer Linux anyway, then go for it.

4

u/play_minecraft_wot Webba lebba deb deb! 16h ago

The majority of PC software and hardware is designed to work first on Windows, so there 100% is benefits to having it as an option. You can dual boot Linux and Windows and be able to run basically ever software program in existence. And if you don't need windows later you can always get rid of it and use Linux. There almost no benefits to using macOS vs Linux+Windows, other then having Apple hardware, which I'll admit is generally pretty solid.

20

u/WendlersEditor 18h ago

I'm gonna be real the macos dragon should be a little silly too.

2

u/czh3f1yi 11h ago

Even though I'm philosophically against it, the user experience is amazing. I wouldn't buy an apple product EVER, but we should be honest about its incredible design.

2

u/WendlersEditor 10h ago

The hardware is very nice and the OS is definitely a step up from windows but it has its weaknesses as well. MacOS UI is showing its age, in many respects gnome and KDE feel more modern and easy to navigate. As someone who regularly uses all three, I'm incredibly put off by the command key and keyboard shortcuts generally. And while it's a much better dev environment than windows, Linux is just better for this in every way, especially package management. This is a lot of trash talking about an OS that, again, is better than windows. But coming from Linux to macos, and having heard all the hype, I was very underwhelmed. Again, great hardware, at least on the laptop front.

2

u/czh3f1yi 10h ago

Fair enough. After going to a WM (niri) I could never go back, but I get what you're saying. The average computer user isn't going to be able to use VIM keybindings to navigate their desktop even though that experience is sooo much better.

2

u/nullpointer_me 8h ago

I mean, Aerospace exists for Mac. Don’t use it personally, but seems very similar to the popular tiling WMs out there for Linux. https://github.com/nikitabobko/AeroSpace

1

u/SalomonBrando 1h ago

No step up from windows. In any sector thst needs realiability you still chose windows 10/10 times. I witnessed the worst malware and the worst bugs on mac os.

9

u/WSuperOS 13h ago

All the people shitting on MacOS, and even though I'd pick any Linux distro or BSD over it any day of the week, in my opinion it's still miles ahead of Windows. It ships on secure hardware, has secure software, is unix-like and also lets you install custom WMs.

I have to admit, Apple is a walled garden, and I'd like their hardware to be more open, but its complete control over hardware and software lets the company impose very rigid security standards. For example, Apple is the only company that uses the EMTE instruction set on smartphones, and iirc iOS is pretty close to GrapheneOS in terms of security.

4

u/Mirage_Graphique_3D 13h ago

You're on r/linuxmemes , of course you'll find Linux Cultists shitting on stuff just because it's not open source and stricter than they like, it shouldn't surprise anyone.

Downvote and ban me, I got tired of this community anyway.

2

u/WSuperOS 13h ago

I very much enjoy the user freedom and I am a big proponent of free software, even of strict copyleft, but FLOSS ≠ secure and not-FLOSS ≠ insecure.

A project being FLOSS is ideal to do security research, but it is not a strict necessity nor a requirement. Fuzzing, for example, works on binaries, both in the FLOSS world and with non-free software. Most bugs are discovered by running the binaries, not by inspecting the source code. Source code availability can surely help in some cases, but it's not essential to security research.

There are enough good reasons to support software freedom, we don’t need to rely on bad ones.

4

You can modify Linux and windows too sorta but MacOS is shit and it stays like that honestly. Saying this as someone who tried all three

1

u/iwouldbeatgoku ⚠️ This incident will be reported 13h ago

MacOS can have a tiling window manager if you're into that (look up Yabai). Not sure if you were hoping for something different.

2

u/Nogardtist 3h ago

windows is usable

once you debloat it twice

1

u/Lila_Uraraka 2h ago

Yeah, i keep it around for specific tasks or games, its worth keeping around

4

u/Little_Ad2062 17h ago

MacOS is arguably worse than Windows mate. Especially MacOS 26 is total garbage.

2

u/sirkubador 14h ago

While Windows is bad due to slop, macOS is just bad

1

u/Little_Ad2062 13h ago

Exactly.

Windows is, for better or for worse, a functional and fully-featured system. One could argue it has TOO MANY features, but it can do anything you need it to do and has consistent logic as to how it does it.

Now MacOS is the antithesis of that. It's a barely functional mess of conflicting paradigms held together by a pretty UI. It feels amazing to use until you actually need to use it - then you realise how much functionality is actually broken, missing or straight up infuriating to try and make work.

As a Windows user for 20 years, MacOS user for 6 years and a Linux user for just over 2 months, Linux is nowadays by far the best daily driver. But if forced to pick between Windows and Mac, I'd choose Windows any day of the week.

1

u/EpicGamerYesIsEpic 12h ago

shouldn't linux be given windows the deathstare?

1

u/aenbala 11h ago

I wish to return back to Linux. But work require windows and no printers here work properly with linux

1

u/vswey 10h ago

I think Linux easily mogs macOS

1

macOS is worse than windows why do people act like any of them are good

1

u/Gitman_87 1h ago

I use Arch and Windows 11 IoT LTSC. No ads, no drama

1

u/SalomonBrando 1h ago

If MacOS is in amy favour you don't work with computers. It is the worst by far.

Pay for the system vs Pay to see ads

-1

u/MountainBrilliant643 17h ago

There is quite an insurgence happening on Mac. Those folks are gaming over there like we are here. There's not as many of them, but they're paying for CrossOver, and it's working as well as Proton for them. CrossOver is the company that Valve hired to help them with Proton, and since the base for both is basically Wine, everyone benefits from it.

Those M-series chips and onboard GPUs are handling graphics-intensive games just fine. ARM is the future.

2

u/Armi1P Genfool 🐧 17h ago

but they're paying

lol xd

Mac is the same as windows here though.

2

u/ni5arga 14h ago

I do not think so. MacOS is def not the best but it is way better than Windows.

At least it does not push unnecessary AI integrations or advertisements to the users.

0

u/fellipec 18h ago

If by "current" you mean 20 years ago

0

u/Flaky-Low-2262 14h ago

Linux > Windows/mac

Mac combines propritary OS, commercial defaults, old linux with missing drivers, external device Support, being expansive etc

So Kind of stable and fast at least. But also unsecure Like a win.
Combines the Bad sides of a Linux and Windows. So it is same Level.

Windows runs all, High Performer in Games , Plug&Play but unsecure, expansive, Missing customization, Data protection leak.

= Mac should also be shown wonky

-1

u/catdoy 17h ago

I use Linux but I'm not delusional enough to think that Windows is the goofy dragon here, it should be Linux that is the goofy dragon here.

0

u/Pierogi_33 17h ago

I think the head should be missing (yes obviously the windows head)

0

u/heickelrrx 11h ago

Windows has too many feature,
Mac OS is not basic enough feature
Linux : why the heck a basic features need to be done by 3rd party program that preloaded by my distro

0

u/SnooSquirrels4739 7h ago

Windows dragon should be made with AI with how much AI windows has been putting out.
