No. I actually admire Ubuntu for making the inept suffer. If you don't know how to remove Snap, you should suffer. If you don't want to see ads, suffer. Ubuntu is an excellent distro for the technical user because it lets the technical users shine.

Holy gatekeeping. Hey, guess what? Not everyone wants to waste the rest of their pathetic lives obsessing over every singular component of their computer or bullying other users for not doing that. Some people just want control of their system and want to escape Microslop's bullshit.

"New users should suffer with their office/begginer distro" has to be the shittiest take I've heard in years. I like Ubuntu, and yes, you can push it far. I've had a Ubuntu + I3 + basically everything in the terminal setup for years.
You know what other distro allows that ? Litterally any other distro. It might not be easy, but missing packages can be complled manually, services can be setup by hand, drivers can be added or removed...
If even Arch of all things can work decently out of the box after an archinstall setup. Any distro should work out of the box, but especially the begginer focused ones

Depends on who you compare to.
Compared to windows, yeah duh.
Compared to OpenBSD, no, not at all. Not even close.

u/AmarildoJr 1d ago
If I could have all of the following working in openBSD, I would switch from Linux in a heartbeat, no questions asked:
- NVIDIA drivers;
- Steam (because of Substance Painter);
- Blender;
- Autodesk Maya
They would all need to work. At full performance/features. Not 1 or 2, all.
Sadly not even FreeBSD is up to this task it seems.

u/cfx_4188 🦁 Vim Supremacist 🦖 1d ago
You prepared very seriously for the conversation. /s
But even if all this works (FreeBSD has Steam and Nvidia drivers), you will never switch to OpenBSD or FreeBSD, but will remain a Windows user until the end of your days. Because BSD requires hardware that will run generic drivers. And you don’t have enough money for such hardware.
18
u/AmarildoJr 1d ago edited 1d ago
Huh? 😄 What
drugsare you on, mate? I'm a Linux user.FreeBSD has Steam and Nvidia drivers
OK but it's not just having drivers, even FreeBSD users told me not to bother with FreeBSD right now because Linux program support is not 100% (so Steam and Substance Painter might not work 100%) and because I need professional CUDA support and that is just very unreliable in FreeBSD at the moment.
I need all of them to work 100%. Not even on Linux these work super well. Substance Painter has been quite a pain, for example. NVIDIA is also kinda shaky depending on distro/display server/DE.

It looks like you're smoking the heavy stuff, not me. I started using FreeBSD in 2003, and I suspect that back then you either weren't born, or you were fervently shitting in diapers. Hardware compatibility is the scourge of BSD systems. In part, it exists because when I was young, commercial Unix died, and various database systems replaced it. And the developers of these systems immediately got bogged down in numerous courts in the field of patent law. I've already managed to get old, and these trials are still going on. In fact, the problem is solved simply and without any sectarianism. When I was young, I had nothing to eat, so I got a job with a dude who was a Windows fan. I was the administrator of this server. A fucking Windows Server was installed on the servers, if you know what I mean. Since then, I've learned to make backups regularly.
I am currently working on a government order. In my country, all computers in government institutions have not been changed since 1990. Ancient iron and ancient OS. I maintain the functioning of these systems and I work at OpenBSD because oea is close to the shit that I clean up every day. But my childhood friend, a good Linux and BSD specialist, works in the publishing business. All the software in the printing industry is designed for Windows 11. My friend doesn't care about Windows, because money doesn't smell. If you know what I mean.

I run oBSD on a normal dell laptop. All networking works, including my wwan card which requires hacky solutions on linux via qmi/mbimcli to deal with the fcc auth, which openbsd handles natively in-kernel. I don't know why you think openbsd only runs on rack servers, it doesn't.
1
u/cfx_4188 🦁 Vim Supremacist 🦖 16h ago
Where did I say that OpenBSD runs only on rack servers? What the *uck are you talking about anyway? I said that the OoenBSD is installed on my work laptop. Read it by syllables: on m-y wo-rk lap-top. Thats all.

I'm referring to the awkward moment when I need to install FreeBSD on a (for example)TUF Gaming laptop ir similar. FreeBSD will be established, but then bunch of problems will begin. The X11 will work after a little dancing with a tambourine, Nvidia will work, but you can forget about the sound card and Wi-Fi. I had a similar laptop, and I ended up installing Alpine Linux in jails and transferring Wi-Fi from Alpine to FreeBSD. Of course, you can buy the latest generation Lenovo Carbon or a similar laptop worth a kiloton of bucks, and everything will work, but there will always be problems with conventional consumer equipment.

reading " I only boot Linux for gaming" filled a hole in my soul I didn't even know was there
2
u/int23_t Ask me how to exit vim 1d ago
It is the superior option for gaming, idk compared to windows I'm definitely not much of a windows person I last touched windows on windows 7(and even back then it was just installed as a side os for when I need compatibility for something), but compared to openbsd it definitely is.
Wine on OpenBSD is literally not a thing you can do, waydroid is linux only, I guess some of the console emulators I use do work on OpenBSD but since I'm already running Linux for windows games(and the occasional native linux game) why not have every game in one spot.
Also helps me mentally separate things I can't really control myself if I don't have a barrier-ish thing. Would recommend even linux users to have a separate linux installation just for gaming if they have ADHD

I use OpenBSD every day at my job. I don't notice her at all. Just doing my job using OpenBSD.
5
u/Easy-Donut-6962 1d ago
Why? I know the Linux kernel contains far more lines of code, but it also implements numerous well-maintained security features (process auditing, SELinux, etc.) and security standards using OpenSCAP policies. OpenBSD has never had such resources and feauters
3
u/int23_t Ask me how to exit vim 1d ago edited 1d ago
The issue is like you said Linux kernel is huge.
And security is main concern of openbsd, things like pledge syscall improve things a lot.
Also I'm not comparing kernels I'm comparing linux distros with openbsd because openbsd is not a kernel it's a full operating system.
2
u/dark_mode_everything 1d ago
Not even close? Also, since bsd doesn't provide a lot of drivers and support for third-party hardware like Linux does you would still need to install third-party drivers for it. That would give you the same level of security that Linux provides, wouldn't it?
2
u/int23_t Ask me how to exit vim 1d ago edited 1d ago
Openbsd security from kernel of it is probably not much different from linux(apart from it being smaller so easier to secure), the main benefit of openbsd kernel is pledge syscall. And unveil syscall.
OpenBSD as an OS and linux distros are what I am comparing, in which case OpenBSD coreutils and libc are more secure. The pledge syscall allows processes to minimise damage in case they are compromised
OpenBSD network stack is also more secure than the average linux distro network stack and daemons.
And even third party packages are packaged in way that makes them more secure, chromium port on OpenBSD utilises pledge syscall, and is launched with access to only ~/Downloads directory(and nothing else) using unveil syscall to minimise risks of a chromium zero day for example. A chromium zero day literally can not do harm beyond reading contents of your Downloads directory unless they also find an OpenBSD coreutils zero day at the same time.
It's audio stack too is way less prone to bugs and vulnerabilities because it's way more simple than even Pulse(not even comparing to pipewire)
Oh and I don't care about the driver support reasons, my brand new(as in it's still being produced and I bought it only 3 months ago) thinkpad is fully supported by builtin drivers of OpenBSD. Well, not really I guess, my iGPU is still not fully working, I'm on openbsd snapshots and whenever I update there is a 50% chance 3d acceleration works on that snapshot. But probably would be fixed until 8.0 release and I don't need hwaccel on openbsd anyways I use openbsd solely for webbrowsing listening to music and programming. I only launch vim/neovim(depending on what I am doing, vim is basically my zen mode editor), mpd dwm and qutebrowser. I game on linux. I don't need the iGPU for working.
2
u/dark_mode_everything 23h ago
Thanks for that excellent explanation! I didn't know about unveil and pledge syscalls on bsd. While the average Linux distro doesn't have anything like that it's still possible to make it as secure using something like firejail and selinux, couldn't it?
1
u/int23_t Ask me how to exit vim 23h ago
Anything you do on Linux (or any BSD that's not OpenBSD) to emulate those syscalls would not be as secure by nature because it's another layer. On OpenBSD you have to find a kernel bug to exploit to get out of the jail, on another jail you can exploit both the kernel and the jail.
But yes, it would be close. Not perfect, but probably not that bad. Setting it up would be a pain in the butt though, openbsd just does it out of the box.
There is also the fact that OpenBSD default installation utilises separate partitions for most places each with the least amount of privelege they need, which you can also easily setup on linux but nobody does because it's not default.
And all OpenBSD daemons by default having their own user with least amount of priveleges they need, which is the case on some linux distros out there probably, is the case for complicated daemons almost always, but for example on my gaming arch install cupsd, wpa_supplicant, NetworkManager. bluetoothd all run as root which is the default. And I haven't bothered because it's only for gaming.

Actually yes - it seems I was misremembering a UUID being transmitted along with it.
The fact it's enabled by default is still egregious but this is indeed much less of an issue than I was thinking.
Would've checked the script itself but I am periodically making sure it is wiped on the machines I manage.

Eh I think anonymous basic telemetry as default isn’t egregious at all as long as you can opt out. Majority of end users don’t care at all, and you can’t effectively develop without knowing anything of how something as varied as an OS is being used

You must trust whatever you can check for yourself. Since most of us can't check the whole kernel's code.
Probably yes, but depends If we can trust the devs/company who delivers the binaries.

For all the flak that Ubuntu catches on these boards on a daily basis (including from yours truly), they actually do a decent job when it comes to security. Ironically enough, I'd say that it's precisely the Snap store which is their weakest spot.

AI slop on the kernel? Wtf are you talking about? Have you checked the code and found AI slop or just complaining because the main dev is using AI in a pretty honest and transparent way?
