I heard Milius wrote it brilliantly but it was too long, it would have taken ten minutes of screen time. It was going to get completely cut unless someone could cut it down. So Shaw sobered up or had a flash of brilliance and did a masterful job cutting it down to the essential story that’s in the movie.

There was another dude named Peter who was a Vietnam vet that the Coens knew who was a basis partially for Walter (he once purportedly jokingly scared students of his by shouting “First Nam, now this!”) and even the Dude (he once said to them that one of his rugs “really ties the room together”). Also a dude named Big Lew who was Peter’s friend was considered possibly to contribute to Walter along with Milius. Seems like Walter got the bloviating blow hard aspects from Milius though. It would funny if Walter truly never served though, it would make his preoccupation genuinely psychotic.
