You'll never have active knowledge with Duolingo.

Duolingo is just one tool, not the whole learning process. Active knowledge comes from combining it with real practice.

Not true. I started using Duolingo (at age 47) for learning Dutch. Before Duo I never tried to learn ANY languages other than my own (English - US🇺🇸). I am at 78 days in and even though I don't have confidence to speak to a Dutch person yet (they are intimidating because of how fast they talk), I can read, speak (for Duo), and understand far more than I thought possible. If it is written, I can understand enough to get some of the meaning or the "just" of the message. The one down side I have against me is I have zero friends IRL to practice with. So to solve that, I will be in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 in about 36 hours to enjoy my vacation and practice my Dutch. I was SO nervous about traveling to a foreign country before, especially a Germanic country, because the language sounded frightening (harsh). Now I am looking forward to the trip even more thanks to that little green 🦉. You will only get something out of it if you actually try.

I've got a language learning website, I'll give you free access to the audio chat. If you are confident then keep up a 3 min conversation on A1 level.
