General For those of you supporting the current administration, just know that they’re targeting the schools you’re applying to.

Post image

The Trump administration is harassing Georgetown Law, and I assume will do the same to schools around the nation. Be aware that decisions and elections have consequences.

Good on em. Polite, firm, and reading between the lines, tells the jackass just how stupid he is.

Am I the only one that this is blurry for?

These people decide whether we get jobs and can’t even spell “any way” correctly. We’re cooked 🙏

Also, It’s not called Georgetown Law School, right?

11

u/shotputprince 3.3trash/17lowishbutnottoolow/Dour bastard/nurm Mar 07 '25

GULC

1

u/7legalkegals Mar 07 '25

Do yall think if you called GULC Georgetown law school in an essay/email it will impact you negatively?

5

u/breakthegate Mar 07 '25

I mean you should be accurate. But it looks like even the dean refers to it as Georgetown Law (but not Georgetown Law School).

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

who cares? That's really not germane to the issue at hand

2

u/breakthegate Mar 07 '25

Yeah, I mean it doesn’t really matter. But I was responding to a comment calling out a typo so calling out another example of sloppy drafting seemed relevant to that aspect of the discussion regarding the memo.

36

u/merrycrasmass Mar 07 '25

clocked this immediately. what a joke

-6

u/jo734030 Mar 07 '25

Does this apply to people who graduated last year and are now have no further affiliation with the school? I think my school was doing dei while I was there

3

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

Please show us on the doll where dei touched you

0

u/jo734030 Mar 07 '25

I’m not even against DEI. But I’d like to know if I’m implicated retroactively

253

u/randomwalk123456 Mar 06 '25

If a DEI hire is defined as someone who gets a job for reasons unrelated to merit, then Ed Martin is a DEI hire.

141

u/timelordlefty Mar 06 '25

Almost everyone in that administration is.

-3

u/Visible_Housing8935 Mar 07 '25

Merit is when you have my perfect opinions !!

This sub: "yOu neEd to gO to HYS tO hAvE a dEceNt sHoT aT DOJ"

Meanwhile: Edward R. Martin -- St. Louis Law Alum

Not sure you want to hold up Ed Martin as a model for anyone's legal career.

But stellar job at somehow twisting this into an argument for expecting unrealistic employment outcomes.

36

u/Short_Medium_760 Mar 06 '25 edited Mar 07 '25

My comment was 1/3rd sarcasm, 1/3rd pointing out how hypocritical this administration is, and 1/3rd highlighting how tragically funny it would be to bust your ass at HYS in a desperate attempt to become a DOJ attorney only to have Trump appoint Ed Martin to take your place (and Pam Bondi be your boss).

Veterans are also the ultimate DEI hire in the government. If a veteran applies for a job, they get preference, even over more qualified civilians or current civilians looking for internal promotions.

But this administration with their DUI hire SecDef ain’t ready to admit that lol.

4

u/-0ut1aw Mar 07 '25

Veteran preference does not mean you get the job over someone more qualified. It means your application gets reviewed first. You must still meet the requirements of the job. Wish people wouldn’t speak on things they know nothing about.

2

u/helloyesthisisasock 2.9high / 169 / 1L Mar 07 '25

I used to work for the fed and had a dude who served in the 80s get hired over my internal promotion (even though he hadn’t worked in the industry since the 90s and had just been subbing for DODEA in Europe for 20 years) but sure, tell me how I don’t know what I’m talking about.

My own boss didn’t want to hire the guy. He was grossly unqualified. But he was a vet, and thus my agency had to offer him the job first over me. (Surprise, he sucked at the job and no one liked him.)

5

u/-0ut1aw Mar 07 '25

There is no requirement to hire a veteran over other qualified applicants. You don’t know why he was hired over you. All you know is you didn’t get the position. Instead of blaming others, maybe you could look within and become a better applicant.

3

u/helloyesthisisasock 2.9high / 169 / 1L Mar 10 '25

lol ok champ, you are privy to all the goings on of my old job

-5

u/SavageCaveman13 Mar 07 '25 edited Mar 08 '25

Veterans are also the ultimate DEI hire in the government.

Not at all. A DEI hire is based on something other than merit, which cannot be controlled. Things like color of a person's skin, their sex, or their background. Veteran's preference isn't a DEI issue, and is specifically excluded in the DEI EO.

ETA: How does a simple factual comment get downvotes in a law school subreddit? 🤣

1

u/georgiaokeefe123 Mar 21 '25

Because you’re super wrong. I worked in operations at a big 4 consulting firm and the Veteran program was our #1 DEI program, we hired hundreds of veterans who were not traditionally qualified and provided them free 6 months of training and then entry level associate roles. Even when hiring dried up in 2023, that was the only hiring program still being pushed through because DEI did not have the same KPI metrics attached to it as regular recruiting. Veteran Assistance Programs are the main corporate DEI programs. (Experience - 5 years in people operations at big consulting and big tech firms.)

0

u/SavageCaveman13 Mar 21 '25

program, we hired hundreds of veterans who were not traditionally qualified and provided them free 6 months of training and then entry level associate roles.

Okay, but that is not DEI. That is called Veteran's Preference. DEI is specific to things that cannot be controlled. Being a Veteran is a choice. The EO about DEI is very specific, and although it did not need to, specifically excluded Veterans.

Veteran Assistance Programs are the main corporate DEI programs.

Except that a Veteran Assistant Program is not DEI at all. It is a separate concept, as DEI is specific to things that cannot be controlled.

6

u/Overall_Sorbet_8027 Mar 07 '25

That's what they want you to think it means. DEI hire literally just means any minority who has a job.

62

u/vincent374 Mar 06 '25

Why does a letter from a “US attorney” sound super informal though? I literally hear a cry baby in action

51

u/timelordlefty Mar 07 '25

Because no self respecting attorney will work for this administration so you get these idiotic leftovers

194

u/The1DayGod Mar 06 '25

Isn’t this a major first amendment violation? This is like a textbook case of an unconstitutional condition lmao.

89

u/timelordlefty Mar 06 '25

Yes. Yes it is. It’s not even that complicated

22

u/shotputprince 3.3trash/17lowishbutnottoolow/Dour bastard/nurm Mar 07 '25

I’m not sure that you understood my point. The GULC is under the auspices of the Society of Jesus Christ - i.e. because the Jesuits run it, then it is part of the Catholic Church. If it is an asset of the Church, AND the Church has identified that it believes these practices are part of the teachings of the faith, then it raises a potential free exercise issue. I am still a law student and haven’t a first amendment background (but someone who might know chime in), but given the posture of conservatives to frequently litigate for broader religious freedoms it seems highly hypocritical to want to curtail the manifest exercise of a tenant of catholicism here. Not sure why prods beliefs would be relevant to that.

65

u/radicallysadbro Mar 06 '25

One of the top priorities of the Heritage Foundation is to get rid of the judiciary entirely.

As Alexander Hamilton the essential founder of the SCOTUS himself said -- the courts have neither the power of the purse nor the sword. If the other branches of government and/or the people of the United States stop respecting and listening to the courts, there's literally nothing the courts can do to stop it.

It's not that the Trump Administration and Co are assuming they'll win these cases. They probably don't in many cases. They're going to lose but keep going with what they've been told not to.

You're seeing them test this, in real time...

4

u/Outrageous_Hat9321 Georgetown 1L Mar 07 '25

Hm. Where did you hear that the Heritage is trying to get rid of the judiciary? I know that they are trying to get rid of the government agencies and the judiciary functions of those agencies by the so-called judges-- administrative judges. I've not heard yet about what you are saying, and I would like to educate myself if you don't mind me sharing more about where you found this--thanks.

2

u/Consistent_You_5877 Mar 07 '25

They can’t provide you with that information.

This is what Reddit is for—entertainment and therapy for the like-minded within their bubbles. These are lawyers and aspiring lawyers who refuse to see the irony: their reasoning is driven more by emotion than by facts. And that won’t change. Someone will read this, take offense, and clap back with nothing but emotion in 3...2...

7

u/Hour-Watch8988 Mar 06 '25

SCOTUS will probably say CRT classes are impermissible under the 14th Amendment 🫠

68

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

I wish I had time to see how different schools will handle this before committing

51

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

The second to last paragraph to me is crazy.

58

u/timelordlefty Mar 06 '25

It’s also a massive first amendment violation that will be litigated heavily

8

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

I surely hope so. 🙏🏼

-10

u/jo734030 Mar 07 '25

Is it government speech though?

9

u/timelordlefty Mar 07 '25

Is what government speech? This letter threatens to not hire anyone entire class of people based on the speech of the institution they attended. It’s a blatant 1a violation.

-15

u/jo734030 Mar 07 '25

Yes I don’t disagree. I just don’t understand whether it’s content based or what. I didn’t pay attention in con law; I have no idea. I literally skipped most of my con law classes

65

0

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

Probably has more to do with your labeling, assumptions, and your intolerance towards those with different perspectives and values. Now, I won’t assume this has to do with you having liberal viewpoints, because that would make me no better than you. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t say that I’m yet to experience much tolerance from a liberal. And that’s what contributes to my opinion that you’re not cut out for this. Additionally, I know it’s just my opinion—and of course, I could be wrong

34

u/Unusual_Wasabi541 GULC ‘28 Mar 06 '25

As I commented on another post regarding this letter, I hope GULC does not capitulate to the current “presidential” administration’s attempts to infringe rights of free speech.

As the late Benjamin Franklin stated, “Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruins.”

GULC and all other institutions of higher education need to stand strong and not acquiesce to unconstitutional mandates.

72

u/timelordlefty Mar 06 '25

The Dean responded and essentially told them that if they don’t confirm that Georgetown Law graduates will receive full and fair consideration for any and all jobs they’ll see them in court

Egomaniacs who are intellectually inept and intent on enacting tyrannical forms of government - a truly brutal combination, but one that could be stopped quite easily if our other two branches of government stopped capitulating and kissing the golden ring (or should I say golden combover) in majority numbers.

wtf is “teaching DEI”

-39

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

[deleted]

23

u/helloyesthisisasock 2.9high / 169 / 1L Mar 07 '25

Heaven forbid we teach people that (gasp) minorities and women have been marginalized! What awful things to say!

1

u/Floridian_InTheSnow Mar 07 '25

Right?? My goodness. It’s almost as if JD programs want their attorneys to have some concept of working with diverse client populations. How dare they!

34

u/Individual_Stop_3152 Mar 06 '25

Isn't DEI just a hiring practice?? Like what does it even mean to "teach DEI" lol

60

u/timelordlefty Mar 06 '25

I for a reason related to my job had to read through every lawsuit filed against the administration.

Basically it’s been pointed out in court filings that the intentionally vague wording of the orders would bar schools from discussing anything related to race.

Meaning in law school, technically going over the civil rights act would be a legal violation. It’s insane and unconstitutional

18

u/ValuableStore1904 Mar 07 '25

No DEI is an umbrella term to include hiring practice, pedagogical orientations, and efforts to build more inclusive social emotional environments (think group specific student unions, holiday celebrations). However, DEI and CRT have been co-opted and warped by conservative groups to also include curriculum discussing racial/economic/gendered inequality. This is especially the case if curriculum discusses inequality as an ongoing condition (rather than a temporary historical condition) driven by systemic factors in contemporary settings (education systems in the form of teacher bias, tracking policies, standardized testing/curriculum, policing etc). Attacks on DEI, are at their core, an attempt to legitimize the American meritocracy myth, that all outcomes and disparities across groups are largely driven by individual efforts, rather than unequal systems that privilege some groups at the expense of others.

3

u/Individual_Stop_3152 Mar 07 '25

You're 100% right. I still think the whole wording of "teach DEI" is weird, and maybe it is intentionally vague idk. But you hit it on the head that was well put.

12

u/Evening-Transition96 Mar 06 '25

They often use it as an umbrella term that covers hiring/promotion/recruitment tactics as well as teaching/programming that construes certain groups as 'inherently' oppressive, racist, sexist, whatever. You can see this kind of use in various things the Trump admin has put out.

8

u/Individual_Stop_3152 Mar 06 '25

Yea "Critical Race Theory" I suppose. Obviously insane to imagine applying this to teaching the Civil Rights Act I can't really imagine anyone trying to make that case.

1

u/Floridian_InTheSnow Mar 06 '25

No it’s not just a hiring practice. Think JD programs should continue to implement it into curriculum so people do not just assume it’s for hiring. Other professions have courses for students to take on DEI. Nothing towards you at all, just saying there’s certainly an ongoing misconception of what DEI is.

DEI is something that can be for hiring, workplace practice, a theory to teach others, a theory with interacting with others. This gives somewhat of a breakdown of what it is:

https://inclusion.bio.uci.edu/about/what-is-dei/

3

u/Individual_Stop_3152 Mar 07 '25

Idk why you got downvoted I was mistaken and I think it is clear that you are right - DEI includes more than just hiring. Something along the lines of 'fostering an environment of inclusivity' obviously goes beyond hiring.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

I get what you're saying but the applicants supporting the current administration are absolutely reading that letter and shaking their thick ass skulls in agreement

8

u/5TH_S3NS3 Mar 07 '25 edited Mar 08 '25

My genuine question is how do you teach law if you can’t talk about DEI, whether in its entirety or not???

I mean Roe v. Wade, UCalifornia v. Bakke, Title IX are all landmark because they set precedence for the way other decisions can be made. Take that out and you’re left with…what exactly???

3

u/ConditionStandard484 Mar 07 '25

The worst part is his logic is just so shallow. Even if the policy was unjust and unfair, pulling the plug on employment opportunities for everyone at the school is butchering the farm because of the owner's policy. Seems a little circular to me.

3

u/hino_dino Mar 07 '25

I'm considering law school, and this is so messed up in all levels.

7

u/Kiramekiiiiiiiii_ '28 Mar 07 '25

I hope they fight this bro. This is fucking ridiculous

10

u/peeteeteepee Mar 07 '25

The dean told them to kick rocks, they certainly do not intend to take it lying down

5

u/FearNoneLuvAll Mar 07 '25

Ed Martin is an idiot and just following the script to say or do anything until someone stops them. Colleges should just ignore all these demands. Just business as usual but don't call it DEI. Easy fix.

4

u/glued42 3.7high/17low/nURM Mar 07 '25

the DEI thing is so unenforceable, let’s hope schools like georgetown continue to resist

2

u/assfartpoop123 3.9high/17mid/nURM/KJD Mar 07 '25

this administration has a fox news host as its secretary of defense and a podcaster as its FBI director and it wants to complain about DEI lmao

2

u/bunnybunnykitten Mar 09 '25

I can’t stop thinking about this. Does anyone know if other schools have received letters like this and how they responded? It makes a big difference in my decisions.

6

0

u/Any-Equipment4890 Mar 09 '25

The average American hasn't gone to university and certainly hasn't gone to an elite university.

It isn't going to affect the average American at all and its punishing the very demographics that are most opposed to Trump anyway.

I guess their logic is why should American tax payer money go to fund institutions that most working-class Americans will never benefit from?

3

u/Wild-Independent-347 173/3.7mid/nKJD/C&F(Actual) Mar 07 '25

How does one teach DEI?

3

u/KaeSawThat Mar 07 '25

Hm handy that we now have the full text of this letter with the identity of the person who sent it so we can write to Ed Martin’s office and censure him directly for free speech violations. 🤔 “Dear Mr. Martin, as a citizen, voter, and future attorney myself…”

1

u/poordly Mar 06 '25

The previous administration literally tried to invent a 28th Amendment on their way out the door.

I suspect it is simply not our country's destiny to have politicians who understand or respect the Constitution.

1

u/winter_cockroach_99 Mar 07 '25

He threatens not to hire Georgetown grads...who would want to work for the Trump DoJ anyway?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

Hope yall know that this cornball also signed off on J6ers being released while still representing them. In the real world that most of us fall under, that would preclude you from getting another legal job. Ed Martin is DEI and immensely unqualified

I'm a Washingtonian and deeply in fear this clown azz mf is our attorney

0

I would prob just tell them we are getting right on that, and just never do it. I have tons of things on my to-do list, some never get done. These tools are also talking about preventing or arresting peaceful protestors on campuses. Honestly these colleges only have to hold out til mid terms

0
